Hi everyone

What are your thoughts on names in the top 10/20 etc lists?

OH and I have struggled for ages trying to decide names, wanting something that when we call our child in the playground, 5 little heads don't turn round, but not being able to find anything more unusual that we actually like. Equally as bad would be feeling embarrassed calling a name in the playground cos it sounds silly!!!

Anyway, we've decided maybe its more important that we love the names than pick something unusual for the sake of it... soooooo what do you think of....

Charlie Alan Humphrey (Alan is my late Grandpa's name)
Daisy Alice Humphrey

Do you think there will be a million Charlie and Daisy's around as they are both very popular at the moment, or do you think that just cos a name isin the top 10, doesn't mean there will be 5 in each school class?!

Also, do you think the names sound ok with the surname Humphrey?

I'm having exactly the same dilemna hon but my friend said to me to listen to my heart and bot worry about it.

I love Charlie (my OH's fave name but we couldn't have with our surname even if were having a boy!!) and Daisy is very pretty. Both sound nice.

There are so many names about, even if a name is in the top 10 list it doesn't mean there'll be loads of them in one class hon. I say go with whatever you like most regardless of how popular it is. I think both your names are lovely too!!!

I am having the same dilemma. Me and OH have chosen the name Oliver but i have just googled the top 10 names for the last few years and Oliver is nearly always in the top 5.

its now put me off the name oliver ... i am worried that if its in the top 10 then like you, i will come across 5 olivers in his class !

however, saying that i have a number of friends who have either just had babies or have little ones until 3 and there is only one of them called oliver.

I guess it's all down to 'luck' as to how many of the same name are in the class if you choose a popular name. I'm a teacher & I've never had more than 3 children with the same name in any of my classes.

Daisy DOES seem v.popular at the moment, but that's not to say there'd even be another Daisy in the class.

If you love a name I would go with it regardless :)

I like both of your names:thumbup:

I know what you mean but i would just go for what you like hunni :flower:

Both your choices are lovely hun :) I'd just go with what you're happy with, your LO could be the only Daisy or Charlie in their class the top 10 doesn't really dictate that xx

I love both of your names, (Daisy especially :winkwink:). Its currently something like 19 or 20 in the list, and I dont know of any other Daisy's at the moment in her age range  (apart from a couple of Daisy's on here ). I think its more important that you like a name. Saying that though, there are 3 Matthews in my sons class at the moment, must have been a popular name 5 years ago . xx

We've been having just this discussion lately. For the record I LOVE both of your choices and agree that the top 10 doesn't necessarily dictate how many will be at your LO's school their age.

I love them both! We went with Oliver, and I personally know about 6 Olivers (adult ones) and a few babba ones...but we love the name so much, we just had to go with it...just do what you like really!

I've felt put off in the past due to names getting so popular, but I decided at the end of the day these are the names I'm set on. I love both your choices, especially Charlie because thats the name me and oh decided on lol x

You need to bear in mind that these lists are composed nationally, so they give the impression of being averaged out across the whole country, whereas in fact some names will be popular in particular areas (and possibly social groups or classes) and not in others. My mum got on the wrong side of this when she named me. She was looking for a name that wasn't that common, and picked Rachel partly because she didn't know anyone else with a Rachel, and didn't come across the name much in any other context. When I was in late primary school, we moved to the next county, and in the school I went to there, out of seventy children there were seven Rachels! You can't second-guess this stuff, so go for what you like!

Thanks everyone.... wierdly i saw some friends this weekend and was talking about names... i didn't mention ours but my friend said he thought unusual names were good and then said 'we know 4 people who had little boys last year and they called them CHarlie - are there not any other 'f'ing names!!! Even though he didn't know it was our choice, its definitely made me think twice about the name - but i still LOVE IT!!!

I love both the names =)

Certain names are popular because they are obviously nice names.

My children are Matthew & Ruby. Both pretty common.

Matthew is named after a very close friend and I love his name because of that (and it suits him) I have met alot of Matthews but he is the only Matthew in his year at school! We also call him Math, not Matt. I think its nice to have a name you love and thats all that matters.

My daughter is also the only Ruby at her preschool which is a suprise but equally I love the name! If I hear someone else with a daughter called Ruby, I always say, great minds think alike lol. x

I don't think you can ever tell. if you look at the actual number of babies named say Jack or Oliver, Olivia or Grace it's something like 5000-odd and that is all throughout England and Wales. You may get lucky and come across relatively few or there may be a lot inyour area but I think that goes for any name really, top 10 or not.

When I named my daughter Olivia 7 years ago, it was number 8 and she has 2 other Olivia's in her year, but regardless what I'd chosen from my short-list (the other 2 contenders were Caitlin and Bethany) she would have gone to school with someone of that name, whereas my boy choices, two of which you'd definitely have thought there would have been another one (Jack and Joshua- number 1&2 respectively for that year) and there are none in her year or the year below. There are a couple of Jack's in the year above and a few older Joshua's.

But really if you love a name does it matter?

Forgot to say my daughter has 2 "Zephs" in her class. I bet the parents didn't expect that.

i have not looked at this list.. but i know what u mean .. you should just pick what u like tho ... atm i have seen a lot of poppy's.. Alfie's.. Rhys, Bailey's etc etc ... dno what over names these are just what im picking up on from ppl i went to school with who are all having kids lately ! :) x

I think its important to go with a name you love- but I also think that if its on the top 10 list you will hear alot of other children with the same name in school and so on- we loved a popular name but kept thinking on it and found a name that is not popular and we both love- so really just go with your gut!
