Painful Breasts..(TMI?)

My doctor seemed the same she wasn't overly convinced it was thrush but she also admitted that its very hard to tell either way.

I haven't had any more signs of lumps but i was in tears earlier when she was feeding it was just soooo painful.
Wow 9oz is good going but i can feel your pain hun.
Amelia went through a growth spurt last week i think, she seems to have also developed a problem latching on she won't open her mouth wide enough and then she ends up screaming her head off.

Just when i thought i had the whole b/f thing cracked, it was going perfectly and now all this....it does make you feel like giving up sometimes.

If you don't mind i would like to hear how you get on at the doctors. If things don't improve soon i am going to call a lactation consultant.

I had fluconazole (mentioned it on the last page) and it did help. If the duct doesn't seem to be blocked any more the pain should hopefully improve soon...take some paracetamol if you need to. Massaging the lump in a hot shower - down towards the nipple - helps if you get it again. If you get any redness/burning pain/swelling and a fever/chills make sure you back to the doctor as you'll need treatment if you develop mastitis x

Rebecca is doing the same thing! I'm trying the old nose to nipple and then putting breast milk around nipple as the smell should make her open mouth wider but she'll close her mouth and grab my nipple before I manage the assisted (or whatever it's called) latch. She's too impatient to do it properly nowadays.
Also, when she's feeding from left side she's rolling my nipple with her tongue back and forth across her hard little gums...is very painful...how can I stop her doing that?! Seems like she's playing with her food for want of a better description!
Ouch though! And still trying to clear up my thrush with the gel....my nipples feel like they are on fire sometimes!

Gosh i feel your pain hun, i went to the doctors today it seems not only do i have thrush but also Mastitis!! Breastfeeding is sooo hard sometimes.

The latching for me seems to have improved again....when i latch her on i put my nipple just above her top lip and then as she is opening her mouth (not when it is already open) i put her bottom lip just below the aereola (sp? brown bit lol).
I did initially try rubbing on her nose as you have tried but it doesn't seem to work for me so i tend to just rub it along her top lip, which has worked.

I hope things improve for you soon, perhaps she is going through a lazy feeding session too, is she overtired? That seemed to be the problem for me she was overtired and i guess couldn't be bothered to open her mouth wider...lol

:laugh2: Took me a while! Now I can type, feed and drink tea :D ...as long as he's got his eyes shut or he'll try to grab the tea! x

Ouch at the nipple rubbing on the gums...I used to get that too. Sam went through a phase of just sucking it into his mouth without making any effort to open it first! I'd hold him slightly away from it and keep touching his lips with it (stroke downwards from top lip to bottom and they'll eventually open really wide) but be ready to stop him if he tried to grab it before his mouth was open! He soon got the message... Once she's latched on with your nipple right back inside her mouth she won't be able to grind it between her gums either

And if the gel doesn't improve the thrush in the next few days I would ask your dr for some fluconazole and nystan oral suspension for Rebecca x

I thought thrush on its own was bad enough...how awful for you. Hope they both clear up soon :hugs: x

Poor you having mastitis, do you have a fever? Are you on antibiotics for it? Just be aware that they can make thrush worse!
I went to the docs again yesterday and she gave me another single dose of fluconazole. She said she would get the BF advisor to come and see me in action so to speak but I'm sure he's latching on ok. But he too has started playing with my nipple a bit and coming off and on all the time I guess that's made it worse. I was ready to give up a couple of days ago but things seemed to be improving yesterday. Saying that though, it bloody hurts at the moment! I tried savoy cabbage leaves in my bra yesterday that did seem to help and warm flannels just before and during feeding (easier said than done!).

Hope you get well soon xxx

I did have a fever and hot/cold chills but i keep feeding her from that breast (ouchy! and expressing the other) and this morning i feel pretty good. The doctor didn't give me antibiotics he said to come back if it wasn't improving.

I think these problems are like everything with having a baby though, sometimes you get nights with literally no sleep and then others they sleep through, there are always going to be hard times, but us mamas are tough cookies! lol :D

With the latching on i would do as Sam's mum and I have suggested (i don't know if you do that already) i tend to hold Amelia at the base of her neck/head and she can't pull off on her own she can just close her mouth when she is done it does seem to help. Otherwise the little madam would be looking around all over the place she doesn't realise my nipples aren't that long and stretchy!!

I hope you get things sorted and start feeling better soon hun, it really does make you feel like giving up. :hugs:

I do try to do that but it amazing how strong he is! I'm worried that if I can't control him now what's it going to be like in a few years time?!

hi girls im gonna jump in on this thread! today Iv been getting shooting pains in my left breast (as we speak) so I thought Id have a good read of this thread. Im a bit worried now becuase I was really ill two nights ago I had a high temperature and the chills, I thought it was just everything catching up with me after the birth, my temp came down the next day and hasnt been high since, but now the shooting pains have started andim worred I could have thrush or mastitis. I'm gonig to try the warm flannels in a bit see if that helps and I'll see how it is over the next few days and mention it to the midwife on weds if its not improved.

This thread has been a good read, I think I'll be in this forum alot for some moral support on not giving up! Its so reassuring to know your not the only one, thanks girls xxx
