*Please Read* Obstetric Cholestasis

Update about my itching - it lasted for about 2 weeks like the last time, and is now all but gone. My bloods came back normal, so not OC .. I asked the doctor what the heck it might be, and she said sometimes some of baby's cells get into your bloodstream and causes a sort-of allergic reaction, and that it's more common with boys. Good to at least know why I went through all the hell!!

good luck with your induction :)

my levels have gone up again - didn't think they were going to let me out of hospital the other day but thank god they did but am being carefully monitored and now they ahve upped my urso acid tablets to see what happens in tomorrows test.........as long as the girls are safe.... 34wks tomorrow.... :)

does anyone know if this can start as late as 37 weeks? as the last couple of days ive been unbearably itchy its all over me i cant seem to get any relief from it but wasnt sure if its just the heat or something more?

I think it can start at anytime. Defo go to your doctors and get blood tests.

Does this itching mainly occur on your hands and feet?? The bottoms of my feet have been itching, more I scratch the more they itch...seems worse at night. But my legs from the knees down have been unbearably itching suddenly for the last week. Im seeing my mw tomorrow so will tell her about it too...what do you girls think?:flower:

yep hands and feet. i was standing on the carpet rubbing my feet back and forth and then sitting with them in a bowl of freezing water. it was awful. it was also my lower legs and my forearms. plus bump but thats quite normal for many women without oc

I am new here and stumbled across this forum in searching for why I could be itching so intensely.

I am 36 weeks pregnant and just yesterday started itching. It started on my elbows, then my hands, then my bre*sts and just went everywhere from there. Just this quickly, it is becoming unbearable (hence why I am up at 4 in the morning trying to find answers).

I have a midwife appointment tomorrow evening, but am wondering if it's serious enough to call her first thing in the morning or even schedule an appointment with my regular doc to have this checked out before the weekend.

ask for a blood test to check for obstetric cholestasis as soon as possible. Hope you get it sorted, it's nice having a reason and getting help. x

Hi Laura

Yes, it can start as late as 37 weeks and it's a good idea to check out itching that is worse at night and is on hands, feet, arms, legs (but it can also be all over or just in one place!). If you visit our website at OC Support UK you can find loads of information on the condition and there's a really helpful from and fb group.

Hi everyone,

I have OC and the itching is driving me insane. Just wanted to let you know that I have found 'magicool plus' for itchy skin (in the green bottle) works wonders. It is suitable for pregnant women and for me has worked better than the cream I was prescribed :). Definitely worth a try x

about 2 weeks ago i started itching started off ok wasnt that bad but then if i started scratching i actually couldnt stop!my right leg is itchy all the time and now is covered in scrapes all over it from scratching so much! my belly is also itchy and i am finding its feeling sensitive now from all the scratching on my stretch marks. at first i thought it might be just my stretch marks but then i started to get it on my legs aswell so said it to the midwive at my app this morning and they are sending me in for blood tests in the morning to make sure the liver is ok! surely if there was something wrong id be really bad like scratching 24/7 and really really raw red! i know some of you on here get really bad so i say im ok but do you think it could be something to worry about? xx

Got my results back today, they were elevated but they still wont know anything for another week, apparently I now have to wait for results on a bile salts test :(

how are you doing? I had this in my pregnancy and was induced at 40 weeks

Good thanks! Its all been a little stressful but I am glad I persisted. I do have OC and will be induced tomorrow @ 37+3. I think the induction scares me more than anything. I am just very thankful for threads like this, otherwise I would never have known to push for the right tests.

I hope all went well with your induction!

My induction went to plan and i got to 10cm with 1 pessary and artifical rupture of membranes. did not need an epidural. unfortunately he was in wronfg position and i could not push him out even with forceps so had emergency section. but it wasn't related to the induction just unlucky. don't be scared of the induction. the best advise i can give is rest/sleep in early stages. i didn't and by the time i was in established labour i was so tired. let me know how it goes xx

I am glad things went well for you, even if the ending was not quite to plan.

Well my induction got canned, due to differing opinions from OB's. The one I saw Friday and my cervix was high but he could feel enough of the membranes to be able to break them. So in we go Monday and of course a different OB could only feel how high it was.

So we delivered by c section on Wednesday the 6/7 he was big too 8lb 9oz at 37+5. Little bit disappointed that it seems I will never naturally birth my babies but I am grateful that all went smoothly and that he is healthy.
Good luck!

Congrats on your little boy!!! And big boy too!
I understand the disappointment about the c section, i feel the same but at the end of the day we have our healthy boys.

Just want to say thanks for this thread. My hands and feet were itching like crazy a few nights ago. Had it not been for this thread i would have ignored it thinking it was just another pregnancy symptom. Instead i called nhs direct yesterday morning. the nurse i spoke to didnt know what it was but booked me in with a nurse at my nearest out of hours clinic. by chance a midwife saw me in the waiting room while there and asked what the problem was. when i told her about my symptoms she asked if i would mind speaking to her saying the nurse i was about to see probably wont know anything about it. she explained about oc then suggested we call the birthing unit at our hospital and request a blood test. after six hours at the hospital i was told that my levels were high and they want me to go back for more test this friday. said they may then give me vitamin k till 38 weeks then deliver the baby by 38 weeks at the latest.
we are very glad that weve caught it early so it can be monitored. so thank you for this thread xxz

Hi my name is Amy and i have been reading up on this as i have a few symptoms and was wondering if anyone could reply to me?
Ive had elevated ALT and AST blood results since i was about 14 weeks my most recent ones are 119 and 313 took last week.
The doctors have checked my blood for every infection and virus they know and they have no idea why my results are coming back high so i am on weekly monitoring and having growth scans every few weeks ( next one on friday :) )
At all my appointments they always ask if i have any itching and i always say no but actually i suppose i have had increased itching :S its mainly at night and only really becoming annoying this past week but i always just put it down to being too warm which makes me sweat or the covers annoying me or something else but i guess i should mention this to my doctor?
During my whole pregnancy ive been boiling every day but it is summer so didnt really think anything of it?
I guess i dont want my doctor thinking im being silly cause pregnancy does raise your temperature.
Anyway, if anyone thinks this could be whats wrong id love a reply!
Sorry if my post is jumbled up jusy wanted to get everything out!
Also, if this is what i have, im getting a liver scan tomorrow - will anything show up on it?
:flower:

Hey just a quick question. does anyone know if it take a while for urso to start working? ibe recently started taking it and im desperate for it to work as my itching has now got to the point of being unbareable.

I was diagnosed with this on Sunday, they have given me vit K and Urso but said that is all they do, no further monitoring or blood tests and they don't automatically induce either.
Bit worried as this seems in contrast to everyone else.
Don't think I can bear to go full term, wasn't even due to see consultant for another 3 weeks but they have begrudgingly brought the appointment forward by a week.
Can anyone reassure me?
If they don't monitor or induce then what is the point of even being diagnosed. When the bloods were taken at 7 1/2 weeks my bile acid levels were 40 but how will they know if they are raising if they don't test again. So confused.

the urso won't stop the itching per say. Get some aqueous cream with menthol in it. Worked wonders! Gd luck xx
