Hi guys and girls...following a lot of knee problems I am having to have an operation soon, so am going to start expressing at every moment I have spare, hoping to get enough to last through the operation and recovery time (which I don't know the length of yet) But just in case I don't recover as fast, or can't express enough for the time, I may have to switch to FF for a short period of time, my worry is if he won't take formula. He takes a botle fine, but he has never had formula, anyone gone through this or anything like it? x

I was readmitted when Molly was 5 days old and she'd been EBF. My MIL had to give her a bottle of Aptamil that morning as I was whisked away and she gulped it down. She had a few 'choking' moments but apparently had no problems whatsoever. I then spent 5 days without her so she had to continue on formula and by the time I came home, she was ina lovely routine, we haven't looked back :)

Thanks, I'm hoping (no offence) that I won't have to switch completely onto formula, I love BF too much to wean just yet! Maybe it'll be just while I'm in hospital and recovering maybe!

None taken!

Just see how it goes and good luck!

I bf our little one for 4 weeks but from about 3 weeks was combination feeding, he had no bother taking formula and it didn't make him refuse bf. Good luck with the op and hopefully you'll make a quick recovery.

I don't have a similar story per-se but my LO was about the same age as yours when we switched to formula. (BF was not going well, even that far in).

Anyways, he hated it at first. The big thing was making sure it was nice and warm. I also mixed it with BM for the first week or so. I didn't do it cold turkey either. He still nursed most of the time for the first few weeks, and slowly switched feeds. He night nursed for another two months.

I think your biggest challenge will be dealing with the desire to nurse more than the desire to feed, especially if BF is going well. My LO never liked BF much and so didn't seem to miss it but you might find that won't be the case with yours.

I remember seeing a chapter in Dr Sears book about mothers who are ill and nursing. I think the BF forum might also have info for you too if you haven't posted there yet.
