Reflux Help & Support Thread

Another reason they don't use soy formula here is that 50% of babies with diary intolerance are soy intolerant too. I hope you manage to get a hydrolysed formula script without too many problems.

I got Noahs biopsy results and they show signs of the reflux disease and elevated white cell count in line with the CMPI. They didn't indicate anything else which is good but now means we have to try weaning again.

I'm so dreading it as he only had safe bland foods last time and he still ended up reacting to them. Anyway the dietician is just off the phone and I've to give porridge only for one week and she'll call back to see how things are. Fingers crossed they don't get worse than they are just now.

Glad you got the results!!! Fingers crossed it goes better than expected!!!

Thanks girls. He had some porridge earlier then had a massive screaming fit about half an hour ago but to be honest I think that was teething related.

glad you got the results gilz...bless the little man! X

what is the thing with soya and boys? X

There are high levels of some hormone in soy formula thats not good for boys so in the uk they don't advise using it before 6months as the volume of milk younger babies take before weaning would mean the level of the hormone could be damaging.

The dietician explained that part and I didn't ask for more details as to what it could damage.

Hi ladies, we've just done a 3 day sentence on the childrens ward at hospital.
Georgia had lost anoth 2oz this week and the doctor rang the hospital and demanded we were seen as originally they gave us an appointment in november!!

So anyway we were admitted and they said because of the amount of weight she lost they needed to concentrate on that first, so they had put her on omeprezole and a top up of neocate with gaviscon after a breastfeed. I have been advised to cut down on dairy, he said I don't need to stop it completely as it may not even be a problem.

We have been discharged now as she had a fantastic gain of 10oz in those 3 days!! Were are to continue with that and we will have a follow up appointment to see how things are going and if the vonitting is still an issue then they will do some more tests to find out why.

But I am pleased to say that we have had no sick today at all! So I am very happy xx

Oh well done!! You must feel happy with this! I hope things just get better from now on!

Great news, hope it continues . I don't disagree with the neocate topup, but would recomend you read this article : https://www.reflux.org/reflux/webdoc01.nsf/(vwWebPage)/Breastfeed.htm?OpenDocument. Might also be worth 'power expressing' to keep up ur milk supply, and I'd be happy to answer any Q's you have on bf with reflux. I'm a trained bf peer support volunteer, but there were still times when I really struggled to keep bf - it's sooo hard to find info on bf a reflux baby, but I've picked up lots of tricks n tips so hope I can help if you need it. Just be careful the topups don't reduce your supply and result in you stopping bf if you still really want to continue. If you decide to switch to ff then thats fine too. Also, be aware that you'll be able to work your way back to exclusive bf or continue mixed feeding successfully depending on what u choose - it's up to you, so don't let anyone bully you either way!

good luck, hope ur LO keeps piing it on!! :hugs:

Just a little update, Nims still on Losec (20mg a day) and EleCare.

Shes totally refusing anything that will hide the granules now (puree, porridge, soy yog, jelly, jam) so we are struggling - I did try letting her self wean from it but she was in hysterics within 48h and refusing to drink and eat again
So I went to the Dr and demanded a oral suspension, which is gross (its a bi-carb suspension ) but made up in a 10mg/ml concentration so at least she only has to take 1ml twice a day and its easier to get that down her.

Shes settling again back on that, not perfect but better

Back to see her paed at the end of the month

I have a few questions please:

What gestation were your LOs born at?

Did you have heartburn/reflux in pregnancy? If so, what did you take?

Did you LO get hiccups alot in the womb?

Born on her due date, some heart burn, took a little gaviscon and ate almonds (worked a treat)
LOTS of hiccups in-utero

:hugs: To Nim ~ Good luck for your appointment at the end of the month

Thankyou :flower: I am just seeing if those with reflux babies had similair experiences during pregnancy & wondering if being born early increases the risk.....

Im so hoping this LO doesnt suffer :nope:

Nim was pretty much 'perfect' (haha if only we knew what she'd be like after birth ) through pregnancy and birth, my m/w says she thinks its dumb luck

She did mention that its basically a development issue so she thinks resting a lot in the last 4 weeks could make a difference

She was born 40+5.

Yes, never had heartburn ever before pre preg.. nightly during pregnancy.. I took tums.

YES. NEVERENDING.
Hasn't changed..
I was wondering if it was from her reflux even before birth... ?

I have a question..

My LO has silent reflux.
She's on enfamil A.R. as it's supposed to keep spit up (acid) down..
However, everything i find and everyone i talk to that has used it emphasizes the BAD constipation..

She's also eating sooo much more... she was eating 3 oz every 4 hrs of soy formula than after the very first a.r. bottle she's been eating 4/5 oz every 3 hours! quite a drastic change in less than 24 hrs...

Also she's spitting up the anti spit up formula!
She never spit up much.. considering it's silent reflux..

Should I switch to prosobee i've heard great things about that and reflux babies.. she also really really took to soy well before.. i suspected she had a milk allergy/intolerance before she was diagnosed.

or possibly regular enfamil.. or gentlease..

I'm really not liking the A.R. she's sleeping less too.. I'm leading back towards soy as that's what she did amazingly on.

any insight???

To be honest if she was doing so well in soy I wouldn't change the milk. It could well be she is intolerant as you say but either way it is so hard to find a formula that agrees with a baby with reflux problems I wouldn't risk changing it. Just my personal opinion!

I've just noticed your little girl is only 3 weeks old? I think they don't recommend soy for babies under 6 months?
