yes, yes, I know "chew is gross" "spit is gross!" "Why would you want to do that anyway!?" I don't want to hear it honestly.

I really want to know how harmful chewing tobacco is vs. smoking. They say you can have one cigarette a day while pregnant at the most and it not be too harmful to your baby but, what about chewing/dipping?

Dip is pretty much all tobacco whereas cigarettes are tobacco with thousands of harmful chemicals in it!

So, would anyone be able to tell me anything about dipping while pregnant?

It would be helpful, as I'm feeling guilty for dipping over the past 26 weeks 4 times. :( It's stressing me out more than anything!

chewing tabacco is still ingesting in a form nicotine which is harmful to baby.

its pretty simple... smoking, patches, chewing are all bad for your baby regardless of the frequency in which theyre done. yes chemicals is bad in ciggies, but the niccotine is just as bad either way for the baby. chemicals or not.

you say your worried and stressed, you are absolutely right to be worried because is does carry risks to your baby...

maybe go see your doctor or a hypnotist or someone to help if you would like to quit.

if not try replacing tabacco for gum.

I found this article. It seems to apply more to habitual dippers, and you say you've only dipped 4 times while pregnant so baby should be fine. I suggest attempting to not dip anymore though. I grew up in Texas so snuff is a big thing here. While I've never personally tried it, I don't find it gross. So no judgements here.

This really has nothing to do with your question but I'm intregued..
I live in Australia and I don't know anybody who chews tobacco.. So my question is, whats the difference between the tobacco you chew and the tobacco you smoke..

I know you can get loose tobacco and roll your own smokes, so do some people instead of rolling cigarettes, just chew up the tobacco?

glitter, i believe the tabacco they chew in the states isnt the same as our rolly tabacco... dont quote me but i think the rolly tabacco we have is too dry to chew????

You would be correct.

My husband is American and he used to use dipping tobacco. It's not the same as our roll your own stuff.

Now I don't know what the difference is, but I know there IS a difference. It's all gross to me but each to their own I guess.

smoking even one cig a day i dangerous to your baby...
and chew has its own set of poisons
why poison your baby ? Isnt you babys life worth a healthy fresh unselfish start? Why wouldnt you want to hear about it? I smoked three packs for well 30 years im moke free cold tukey close to 7 year...no it wa not easy but my baby and kid was very worth it.

I'd like to know who "they" are. Certainly no health professional worth their salt would ever say any amount of smoking isn't "too harmful" during pregnancy. Tobacco is bad for you and dangerous for baby, in any form, in any amount.

I don't think you should beat yourself up over the 4 times you've chewed tobacco in your pregnancy. But I also think you shouldn't be deluding yourself. Tobacco is bad for baby and the only responsible thing to do is stop and not do it again. It's as simple as that. Your baby will most likely not have any long term effects so you can relax and let go of that guilt but in the future, be aware that every time you put a toxic substance in your body (nicotine, alcohol, illegal and also lots of legal drugs...), you are putting your baby at risk. I'm sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear but it's the truth unfortunately

I wasn't saying I was going to head on go and do more of it, I just wanted to know the difference.

I have friends who were very heavy smokers and because of that they just couldn't quit. Their doctors said 1 cigarette a day if they MUST isn't going to do much harm, it's the people who smoke all the time during pregnancy that have the birth defects. I asked my doctor about this, who is known as one of the best in the practices around here, and he confirmed it. Yes, I get that it is harmful no matter what but, my point was that doctors say it.

I am totally clueless when it comes to types of tobacco, but this conjures up images of nacho-shaped tobacco leaves and an assortment of dips :haha:

mmmmm... nacho's.....

isnt going to do (MUCH HARM) but isnt harm harm?

and its not worth it...

i was a super very heavy super smoker 3 packs a day.?(stupid of me :( )..and i tried every way in the world to quit and all the way to quit over the years really made it more stressful to quit then because your always sstressed..OMG!! this is my last cigarette OMG!!... what will i do...so one more and the cycle is all over again and then restressed...

so i did it cold turkey the first three days is heck i used hard candy and straws...drinking straw....after the main three days....it was ok...you get a winge for it once in a while but nothing really more then that as for chew...i have friens that do it...its a poison as anything else and why put poison in your baby....that is how you have to think of it...

good luck

I wouldnt do either!! I drank frequently before my pregnancy... And up until i found out i was pregnant.. I went cold turkey.. No alchohol at all for me... Everything can cause a risk w baby so i would quit if i were you.. An try to avoid your heavy smoking friends because second hand is also bad.. Goodluck girlie!!

well done!!

Hmmm, sorry but I don't know the difference so I can't really help ya. I imagine the effects on the baby would be same either way, tabacco is still tabacoo even if a company hasn't added as many chemicals to it (which I'm not sure I believe)

Sorry I can't be much help. And yes, even in small amounts it could be harmful to the baby, but I don't think you should be beating yourself up over it at all. I'm sure we have all done something to different degrees that is in some way potentially harmful to our babies (even if we don't realize it). ... I mean, 2 days before I found out I was preggers I drank a pint of fireball straight from the bottle....

:hugs:

Hahahahahaha!!! This made me laugh. Until I saw him use it, I'd never heard of it either. I was all like, "wtf are you DOING??!!!" Basically it looks like normal tobacco but It's kind of a bit...wetter? Maybe that's the best way to describe it, but it's not wet really. And you put a big chunk of it between your bottom lip and your gum (so gross), and you have to spit out the juice (spit?) into a cup or something. That's about all I know about it. He stopped smoking AND dipping, cold turkey when he came out here to be with me. Hasn't had a single cigarette or any form of tobacco since he arrived here on May 9th, 2011. :happydance:

Yeah snuff is wetter than the tobacco rolled into cigs. It's also generally flavored. Some are minty and some are fruity. It's hard to explain the texture, but it's kinda like wet mulch if that makes sense. They have even been selling it in these little pouches that you insert into your mouth so as to avoid pinching off the snuff. Some people accidentally swallow a little snuff on accident so the pouches help to avoid that. Swallowing snuff from what I've seen will cause most to puke pretty good. Hah

And it has been shown that the stress of quitting entirely for a heavy smoker is more harmful to the baby than a cig a day. But that doesn't really excuse the behavior as those planning to get pregnant should begin weaning themselves from tobacco so as to be able to quit entirely before getting pregnant. But let's face it, I know I never was trying to get pregnant so I don't judge others who got pregnant and didn't plan all the way around for it. I've also never been a smoker/drinker/dipper so I don't have much room to talk there either.

The difference between the two, that I know of based on chemistry, is that when you smoke cigarettes you are also inhaling carbon dioxide, which cuts off oxygen to your lungs, brain, and baby. Both nicotine and carbon dioxide are not good for baby, not to mention the other chemicals in cigarette tobacco. Chew is basically just the tobacco, but since you aren't smoking it you don't get the reaction that creates carbon dioxide. The nicotine is still not good for baby though, as it's been linked to low birth weight.

No judgment on my end, but I do hope you can find some support to curb your indulgences as you never know what affect something may have on baby. Since you only chewed infrequently I am sure your LO is just fine :flower:

the stress of quitting does NOT harm a baby more then a cigarette does and I hope i can say that here........, Cigarettes are poison and the stress of quitting is minor and I went through the whole entire thing with my gp and my ob and it was heck of alot sefer for my baby if I quit cold turkey then If i ingected my poor baby with all those poisons...not only was there a high chance of m/c there a high chance of birth defects...
I have asthma...my dad smoked cigars and and asmtha does not run in my family and it is shown in studies that parents who do smoke that are born to smokers or from smokers in the whom or secondary can be born with asthma.... I also have some other health problems so who knows...

THANKS DAD....I been to the hospital so many times its not funny, I had to be on a oxygen tank and meds with oxgen , i been in the hospital for weeks and im prone to pnumonia evey time I get a cold....

(quitting can be more harmful to a fetus then not quitting) That is something someone made up, want to know why I know because Im guilty of saying it myself when I was pregnant myself with my first babies. Shame on me. I should of thought of my precious babies not of myself....Im lucky nobody has anything wrong but it sure could have went another route....I thank god every day for that little miracle....

I just so not believe that anyone needs to be putting poisons in there body, yes I know its an addiction I was addicted to it for 3o years 3 packs myself until I decided my babies had to come first.....but I had m/c.s maybe some of those m/c where because of me....

Do as you want but doint say well its safer to smoke then not, because that really is not true..
if you going to do it then do it but please dont say that.....just smoke then....
or quite.......but honestly dont make an excuse to feel better about what you are doing...

if you do quit kuddos to you :)

My dr I had back home said she would prefer me to quit when I was pregnant with both my boys but if I couldn't to keep it under a half a pack or less. My youngest I had a hard time and didn't cut back much. With this one I finally got down to under a half a pack but have been in turmoil with the father and been really stressed so picked back up :(. I feel awful really but it is sooo hard to quit, especially when so stressed out!
