Hi girls. I'm ttc and I am a smoker. Not a heavy one, I generally smoke between 7-10 a day. I'm desperately trying to quit but struggling especially as I'm not pregnant yet (the :witch: is here at the mo). I only had 4 yesterday and I haven't had one today and I'm trying not to, although it is hard.

Just wondered how many of you smoked up to the point where you found out you were pregnant as I've heard it can affect your chances (although I do know quite a few ppl who smoked up until the point they found out they were pg).

I didnt but I have smoked so I know its very hard and just wanted to say well done for not having one today!! I think if you're struggling you just need to ask yourself what you want more - the cigarette or a baby. You can do it!!

I think you will be fine. Since you smoke so little I believe you will be able to quit once you find out you are pregnant. Youre will becomes so strong and you want whats best for the LO. I do know some people who can't though , but they are heavy chain smokers. My mom couldnt quit and I wish she did. All her kids had something wrong except for one.

I used to smoke over a pack per day. I quit 2 years ago in case I might get pregnant at some point. Quitting is very nerve-wrecking and I didn't want to do it in a hormonally fragile state - while pregnant.

One good reason to quit now - The best way to quit is to use a nicotine patch. It keeps your nicotine need under contol while you get used to the idea of not being a smoker. Also, the patch makes you feel even more like a "quitting smoking" persona, so the new self-image helps keep your motivation. The reason they don't want you to smoke when pregnant is because nicotine is bad for blood circulation and the baby won't get what it needs (at least that's how i understand it). I read smoking might increase chances of MC by 30%!!!!! If you quit now, you have the luxury of using all kinds of nicotine aids - patches, gum... but once you're already pregnant, those things will do as much harm as actual smoking so it's difficult to have motivation to use those in stead of having a cig. You'll be a nervous wreck wanting ciggies and you can't use a patch and the hormones are giving your mood swings, and the lack of nicotine makes you more stressed than you've ever been in your life... Ouch. And you know stress isn't good for the baby, so that makes you even more stressed.... :) spooky situation, isn't it. I hope it motivates a little. I used it as motivation 2 years ago and that worked. Haven't had any tobacco since.

I'm desperately trying to be good. I know I won't have one now because I'm at work, 7 floors up, so it is more aggro than it is worth to go and smoke, especially as I don't have any on me so that would involve a trip to Tesco. It's just when I get home. I can't help myself.

I will definitely without doubt quit when I am pregnant but I was just wondering how many of you did smoke up until that point and still got pregnant because I've heard that smoking can lessen your chances and I definitely want a baby more than a cigarette.

I smoked while TTC, actually, I had quit after I found out back in Feb 2007, but lost it and started again (huge regret) so after so many failed attempts I made an appt with a fertility specialist, booked a vacation, and smoked and drank all week... and got knocked up LOL... I look at 6 week ultrasound pics b/c that's what I will have soon and tell myself I want my scan to have a heartbeat and a little baby bean in there so that helps me avoid the stix :D hope that helps :D

Thanks. Well I have only smoked one cigarette today and that was just now and I didn't particularly enjoy it. I hope this is a good sign. I'm going to try not to smoke at all tomorrow. Fingers crossed I can manage.

There are loads of ways to stop smoking - patches, drugs, willpower, hyponotherapy, talking......

Your practice nurse/GP can help you decide what the best way for you is, or you can call Smokeline 0800 84 84 84 for advice https://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/26739602/

As well as being good for TTC and baby when he/she makes an appearance, think of all the money you'll save and nasty diseases you'll miss out on.

Good luck and well done for making the decision

I smoked for 20 years and quit as soon as I found out I was preggie. GL hun.

I smoked on & off when TTC but stopped when i found out i was pregnant.

Congratulations on giving up though .. its hard work but you just gotta take it as it comes!!

When I found out I was pregnant I was smoking 40 a day.... (really really bad I know.) I have since cut down to nearly a quater of that but I'm having a really hard time stopping completely.

Have you tried fresh start? They have advisors in most boots stores now :)

i didnt quit all of a suddon i found out that iwas preg, i just woke up 1 day and could smell a fag and just turnt myself of it , it is hard, but its the best thing i ever done, i just see people smoking and say to my other half what a dirty habit hw can you smoke it stinks, like i have never smoked ,

I smoked about the same amount as you up to finding out I was pregnant (at about 4 weeks). I wont lie, it has been hard even with the motivation of being pregnant to stay off them but I have managed it. I am really hopeful that I wont go back on them afterwards either!

Good luck!

(oh and i strongly recommend the Alan Carr easy way to quit book)

Good luck hun, it is a really hard thing to do. I smoked and during that time I had 3 miscarriages. As soon as I stopped, I got pregnant and the baby's happy and healthy and my pregnancy has been a healthy one. I'm not saying that smoking whilst TTC will cause you to miscarry (don't want to scare you) but I've felt so much healthier since giving up and I'm sure frame of mind has something to do with successful conception and pregnancy. I also found it really hard to give up (I tried sooo many times) until I read Allan Carr's EasyWay to give up smoking. Have you read it? It made giving up easy for me after so much struggling. Good luck, you can do it xxx

Hi Hun, i smoked while TTC but i did make a point of cutting down. My work has a strict no smoking policy, we cant even smoke in the car park - so that helped me cut down to smoking one ciggie a day during work hours and then at home i was having 2 or 3 in the evenings. When i found out i was pregnant it took me about 3 days to cut them out altogether. I found it quite easy because for me, pregnancy hormones and smoking made me feel sick as a dog! Speak to yourself all day everyday about how much harm it can do to your baby but dont stress about it too much, just have a plan in your head and stick to it - tell yourself you have no choice in the matter!

Best of luck xx

I smoked 25-30 a day for years and all the way through TTC but i quit the day i got my BFP. I was a pshcho bitch for about 2 weeks but now i'm fine. Its been a little over 5 weeks now and i dont even want one, infact i can't stand the smell of them at all, urghh!! Both me and my OH were smoking and drinking loads while TTC and it didn't affect our chances at all, just relax and it will happen with a bit of luck. Well done on quitting tho, smoking is a nasty habit but a hard one to kick x

I quit smoking while ttc, got pregnant, miscarried and started smoking again. I smoked right up until I got my next :bfp:. That day I gave the rest of my pack of cigs to my best friend. I got the :bfp:and was done..just like that. I don't even miss it now and it's nice being able to walk upstairs and not almost dying as I got to the top!!

I think I was actually smoking more heavily when I conceived, and during the first month. I worked in a kitchen and a cigarette was the only way to get a break. If you're having trouble quitting now, I can honestly say that when your morning sickness kicks in the last thing you'll want is a cigarette! It's easy to quit when every puff makes you vomit!

Good luck!
