Personally, I'm happy with Canada's health coverage, especially up here since we don't have to pay at all. Pretty lucky!

Actually you do have to pay if you live in BC. Which I find odd!

Yea I'm in the Yukon. Its free. BC and Alberta pays a small premium monthly. Not sure about the rest of Canada.

I'm in the UK and have had soo many scans I think about 6 or 7 because of concerns.
To be honest I find it annoying and abit boring after the 5th scan.

Annoying because you get told too many different things, the first scan showed our baby might have DS so we had to go another CVS test with included alot of scanning by specialists for about an hour(it's gets boring), but all was clear but they thought our baby might be small due to a low hormone in my blood so order a 28 week growth scan.
Then we had the normal 20 weeks scan and today was the 28 week growth scan and now they're saying our baby might be big??? All this scan is just reaking us out. I can make a photo album of scan photos but all I want is to see my baby in my arms.

The 3D scan was cute but next pregnancy 2 scans are more then enough for me, plus they're only there for medical professionals to check the baby is o.k not for us parents really.

Oh and people that work do pay for their health care it might not be done in the same way as the US but it's not free someone is paying for it, it's just a different systems

My doctor only does 3. One is at your first appointment and the other two are at 20 weeks and 30 weeks.

Im in Australia and we have the 12 week and 20 week scans free.

I dont think anymore than this is necessary unless its for medical reasons. I have had 3 now, had my thrid one yesterday due to measuring large.

Normal pregnancies dont need constant monitoring, until 30 years ago no one had ultrasounds so i feel lucky that we live at a time where we get to see inside our tummies and look at our babies, its an amazing thing really!

I do think there should be a limit on the number of scans (unless for medical reasons of course) that you are allowed to get even if you were to pay for them as we really dont know what side effects excessive scans could possibly have on an unborn child. 30 years really isnt that long.

Scans arent meant to be for entertainment!!

I think where I am I get plenty, more than what some of you get here and appreciate that as those in other places have to pay for them. I have had 3 so far and due another in 4 weeks as i have been asked to come back to check, you get a scan for each app here. So all in all I say maybe 6 or 7 scans and last time with WIlliam I was checked in my own home by a midwife every day! I had high bp. But others would have had to go to them I didnt. This time around next week they have insisted on calling to me again to check all is ok, great service! just becuase I have no car and find it difficult to get to them they will come to me. I dont think that needs more money pumped into it. I think more money in other areas is defiantly needed and its not in scans, scans are not necessary unless something is wrong and they need to keep an eye (my placenta needs checked and baby position) some like it as its nice to see your baby and I hear some areas charge for the pics! we do not get charged where I am (I best keep stump about that). I think where I am compared to other parts of the UK I get it good for something we dont have to pay for and some take for granted.

Also what poeple spend the money they are entitled to wither its a grant or they earn it is none of any one elses business. Its really judgemental! I got my son some stuff from my hip grant as I have everything i need for my new baby being the second one to arrive and I dont know the sex, suppose that shouldn't have been given to me then should it? I got vests, grows and clothes my son needed and shoes he desperately needs.

As this is my first pregnancy and I have long term health problems and am high risk I cannot give enough thanks to the NHS for the care I have recieved so far.

I have had the normal 2 scans at 12 weeks and 20 weeks like everyone gets then because of my complications they have given me regular internal scans every 2-4 weeks from 12 - 26 weeks (never saw my baby in internal scans) I have regular 4 week check ups with my specialist just for chats and then my standard midwife appointments.

As all this is provided to me for free and I do not have to pay for a single thing including medication / dental care etc... during pregnancy I do feel that this is very resonable and if I have the slightest concern I only need to contact the midwife and she will book me in asap no problems no cost.

I cannot in any way fault the NHS regarding my pregnancy at all. I can however find plenty of other places within the NHS where more money is needed within medical help but as far as the care we get for pregnancy I think we do pretty well. Although this is just from my opinion of experiences within my local area.

And regarding the HIP Grant. I think people who spend it on anything they are in need of to beable to provide basics for their children should not be frowned upon
whether you spend it on
your own healthcare during pregnancy such as vitamins / clothing and basics for your newborn,
basics for siblings of a newborn who would otherwise miss out due to the cost of the new baby
or on home improvements to make your home a better safer place for your children
or on extra avaliable healthcare such as 4d scans etc for peace of mind

The only thing I frown upon is people such as myself on low income who spend the extra money such as a surestart grant on material things such as new tv's / sound systems etc. That money is there because people like myself on low income are in need of basics to beable to care for their children and family.

but as far as the HIP grant is concerned everyone gets it whether your on under £80 a week or on £300 plus a week so who are we to judge what its spent on . If everyone gets it regardless of income.

because people were suggesting that people that want more scans should use there HIP grants ..... as with all topics like this we end up going in big circles hehe

I feel that my care during pregnancy was amazing. Postnaral care wasn't as good
As for the hip Grant as long as what the mother buys benefits the baby who can judge

well in some countrys you get a scan every 4 weeks... here you get 2 or 3 max and thats your lot (unless they have concerns) instead what do they do here...use such a stupid inacurate device of measuring your fundal height and relying on that for babys growth... well im sorry but half the midwifes ive come across either measure diff/wrong to one another... or just did it briefly and ended up with a meh itl be reet attitude then the others turn around and go "ooooh we will keep an eye on that" majority of the time there is nothing wrong with babys size!!! how can they possibly rely on this!?!?!? if baby has his bum stuck up then obvs the fundal height is going to be higher!!! it just seems to me instead of been so cheap they should be offering a scan to check growth etc every 4 weeks!!! not just that but to make sure there is no further problems with placenta/cord or baby! and to check fluid!...

anyone else agree?

Sorry but no, I dont - you have ALL your healthcare needs taken care off for either free or a small deduction from your wages - how many "other countries" can say that?

Point us in the direction that says the fundal measrements / doppler tests / usual checks put babies at risk and I may be inclined to think again.

Ok, the NHS isnt infallible but I would take it over many, if not most other systems any day of the week and too many "Brits" arent thankful for what is available to us.

Why should we be "thankful" for a system that consistently fails us. It is a common opinion that we Brits are lucky and have it better than most, but I am sorry to say that simply is NOT true!
Most other European countrie's have much better health care, FACT. The NHS is NOT free, we pay for it with our taxes and social charges. I would rather keep some of my 25% tax payments and pay for private health cover any day.

I lived in France, where you get private health care 70% subsidised by your tax contributions (the remaining 30% is topped up by health insurance), you get 100% cover when you are pregnant. I had my last baby there and can say quite honestly that the care is a million times better than what I have ever had in the UK.
