We don't let the children watch TV at home, in fact we got rid of ours. As to why, we have lots of reasons but here are just a few of our personal reasons:
- TV is passive, I prefer my children to be active (most of the time anyway!)
- to avoid the influence of adverts and consumerism
- to be in control of when and what my children are exposed to
- to reduce overstimulation
- to avoid sensationalism, fearmongering and violence that could cause anxiety
- a huge amount of brain development occurs during the first two years and is optimised by three types of stimuli: interaction, manipulation of environment and problem-solving activities; TV provides none of these
- studies have shown that the risks of TV include encouraging passivity, slow language acquisition, over-excitedness, trouble with sleep and concentration, and dependence on screens
- the average child will witness 200,000 acts of violence on TV by age 18 and studies have shown that violent TV can cause increased anxiety and sleep disruption, increased verbal and physical aggression, decreased empathy and decreased self-control
- EEG studies show diminished mental activity during TV viewing and the passivity and lowered alertness continues for a while after switching the TV off
- TV can cause neural hyperstimulation by conditioning the brain to expect high levels of input from the orienting reflex, resulting in boredom and inattentiveness in real life
- TV decreases the opportunities for children to mentally conjure a world with creative imagination
- TV is a time waster, by the time the average person is 70 they will have spent 7-10 years watching TV.

I've bypassed several pages of this thread, no doubt it has spiraled out of control with accusations and debate. I just want to say that your points are very good here and I plan to print them out as a reminder to myself of why I try very hard to limit my LO's exposure to tv. It's an extreme point of view but your points are valid.

I watched a lot of television when I started BF because I was relegated to the couch full time. LO never noticed it until around 3.5 months he started turning to the television. It really bothered me and I didn't know why. Just a little tiny bit of research reveals that watching television inhibits a child's language development.

I also didn't like the way LO stared at the tv. I don't like the way anyone stares at the tv. I look at my husband sometimes zonk out like a zombie sometimes and I can hardly get his attention. As soon as I turn the tv off he snaps back into reality. It's a bit frightening. We do still watch tv but much less, the volume is turned down very low and I don't let LO watch at all if I can help it. Sure, there are some educational programs out there but I think I can accomplish much more educational activity with my LO by interacting with him.

ngl, i would have definitely gone to a rave there!

Wow... what a thread! Can I just say that I am loving the fact Disney wants us all to have more sex...:haha:
Some interesting points made on here and quite frankly some ridiculous ones. Back to Baby TV it is.. going to be searching for some messages that will have LO demanding COD by his first birthday :coffee:

I've often wondered if those who zone out on TV were those who didn't get much exposure to it though. I know many people (myself included) who do not get sucked into the TV like that. But I had a friend who wasn't allowed to watch TV as a kid and he zones out like that at ANYTHING on TV.

Of course Disney wants us to have more sex, they need us to have more kids so we will buy more of their stuff

Very first time hubby and I had sex we were cuddling watching the Lion King. (honestly for real!). Guess that subliminal messaging REALLY worked! LOL!!!!!!

I think actual Disney want's our partners to kill us all off... very rarely does the main character have a living mother...

CAAAN YOU FEEEEEL... THE LOOOOVE.... TOOOONIIIIIIIGHT?

Well actually yes, yes I can xx

look, i am not trying to sound smarter or better than any of you. the article i posted where it mentioned the not liking to read thing not being capable of analyzing and comprehending the sequence of words was not of my own writing, obviously. I should have erased that part before posting it, forgive me. My main reason for posting that was because I liked the facts/evidence later stated in the article as it correlated with the point I had been trying to get across.

I am not forcing you to believe what I am saying. I am just presenting you with MY own reasoning for not owning a television. And if that makes me a weirdo, or crazy in your eyes, then so be it.

It doesn't change the fact that i believe that my child, as well as your child, has the most beautiful, amazing, pure, and holy mind ever to exist right now. And i, as a parent choose not to subject that mind to subliminal messaging, fast flashing images, alpha waves, mass advertising, and brain numbing shows (c'mon ya'll know there are A LOT out there)

I understand that it doesn't sound like any of you keep your lo in front of a television 24/7, which is great. As i wonder what type of effect this would have on lo's brain development. Television as i have proved before shuts off the neo cortex part of the brain
Studies have shown that television viewing is associated with learning problems and language delays in preschoolers (Tanimura, 2007). Television viewing promotes attention problems (Christakis, 2004) and interferes with academic performance (Strasburger, 1986). More than 1,000 studies have shown an association between exposure to violent television programming and aggressive or violent behaviors in children (Strasburger, 2002), including early exposure as preschoolers and later antisocial behavior (Christakis, 2007). It is estimated that the average child views 12,000 acts of violence every year. Most network broadcasted shows for children contain 20 violent acts per hour.

again, i am just speaking my mind on MY decision as to why i don't own one. i am not forcing you to throw your television out or to believe me. I am simply replying to the OP's question when she originally posted the thread.

Also, i found this really freaky. taken from a mainstream news website BTW.
A Japanese television network called in doctors, psychologists and animation experts to find out why a popular cartoon triggered seizures in hundreds of children nationwide.

More than 700 people, mainly school children, were rushed to hospitals Tuesday after suffering convulsions, vomiting, irritated eyes and other symptoms after watching "Pokemon," a popular cartoon based on Nintendo's "Pocket Monsters" video game.

I guess with the subliminal messages, I don't feel they are real, or even if the company putting them in their advertizing things they work, does not mean they actually do.

There are subtle ways of getting a message across that aren't obvious... like that follow-on milk advertisement that shows its winter time and cold when the mother is nursing then when spring comes the child starts on follow-on milk...
if thats considered subliminal, then I guess they do exist, but I just see that as association and its quite obvious once pointed out.

I also feel that you cannot shelter a child forever from the world we live in and its better to teach them how to function within our world than hide everything away from them.

If subliminal messages do not exist or have any sort of affect, love, then why would corporations spend millions of dollars to put them there?

heres an exerpt from an article on wikipedia:
In another study, participant's ratings of thirst were higher after viewing an episode of "The Simpsons" that contained single frames of the word "thirsty" or of a picture of a Coca-Cola ® can.[31] Some studies have shown greater effects of subliminal messaging with as high as 80% of participants showing a preference for a particular rum when subliminally primed by the name placed in an ad backward.

Obviously i know that i cannot protect my child from all advertising, as it is litteraly EVERYWHERE. but i can at least get her to understand what it really is, and not pay monthly to pour subliminal messaging, fast flashing images, alpha waves, mass advertising, and brain numbing shows (c'mon ya'll know there are A LOT out there) into her subconscious mind by choice all at once.

well if you believe everything you read on wikipedia.......

again, before believing a claim on the internet that 'a study' proves something, I like to read the basic details about the study, how it was conducted, what the controls were etc.

okay here is one from NOT sourced from wikipedia, okay? it goes into further detail

i can seriously go on but i highly recommend you just do the research on your own.

Plus, what do ya'll think about the seeminly harmless pokemon episode?

freaky ain't it?

Peace & love to you all :flower:

Maaaaaan...this thread has some shocking posts! As an aside, I watch a fair bit of TV and I'm studying for a PhD in Metaphysics at one of the best universities in the world (and I achieved distinctions in both my MA Hons. and my MLitt). Proof, if required, that one can indulge in the evil world of commercial media and still keep those neurones and synapses firing to perfection.

My son didn't watch any TV for the first year of his life, which was a totally personal decision we made as a family. Now we put it on when we're changing his nappy as it is the only thing in my home that prevents him from scampering away, poopy-bottomed, before I'm finished changing him. I have no doubt that he will still be a clever cookie, despite this exposure to TV.

Edited: I am glad he doesn't watch TV though, not merely for some of the reasons already mentioned by some others, but also because I HATE kids TV. Hate it. Drives me bonkers.

Seriously? Is this the life some people lead, worrying about alpha waves? You must have pretty perfect lives and be pretty perfect people then!! If I don't let my lo watch tv it'll be because I want him to read or do some colouring not because of flashing images/ alpha waves/ subliminal messages. It's a bit of tv for gods sake not the devil!!

are you being serious? im starting to think your winding us up...
