Those who dont let you lo see/watch the tv...

Ok so those who will not let their baby watch tv does that mean as a child they don't get to watch tv as well?????

i don't know about others, but once my kid is 2 or 3, he will be watching movies on occasion (we have a TV, but just don't receive TV channels - we use the TV for the DVD player). and, yes, i will allow my kid to watch disney movies...

LO was eating his lunch in the living room today and something came on with some music and be bobbed his bead back and forth :D Other than that he nevee pays attention to the tv and its on ALL the time. Either for background noise or DH playing his xbox games.

as all of mcats posts r just sarcastic when they r not copied and pasted from the Internet.I'm just wondering mcat how old r u? I'm not sure weather all ur posts come from being young and/or maybe spoilt and u always got ur way or u just can't have a normal debate where everyone has said they see ur point but u r unable to see others and just choose to b rude.is this the qualities u r teaching ur child? Just bcoz u feel u r doing best by ur child by not having thE tv on doesn't mean that those of us that let them watch tv don't always teach them to understand others and treat them how u wish to b treated.time to grow up me thinks

I think this has gone a bit far.... everyone is entitled to there opinions, i disagree with mommacat, however i don't think she quite deserves this!

Oh please. i have recieved nothing but rude and sarcastic remarks, been laughed at, been called dumb, been told i am keeping my child in a bubble, and so on....And i have provided much more links to support my views than anyone here has. no one has yet to debunk anything i've said. i benefit in no way from speaking with any of you. Even OP could agree, that i don't deserve a lot of what has been said to me^ Just go back a few pages into the thread to refresh your memory, k. Hypocrites. All i see is sarcasm and rudeness.

"Its funny because out of all the people on this thread that sit in front of a TV like a "zombie", you are the dumbest of the lot."

"I see what you mean though MommaCat, my son saw a can of coke in Asda the other day, came home, cut the sugar into neat lines and hoovered that shit up. Next minute, the baby's humping the cat, Jack's high as a kite and I'm a quivering wreck of sexual frustration thanks to all those damn sexy ads on Beebies. Jesus what a day."

"I'm so sorry to Sophia, she will now live a life of being a tv addict and not have endorphins realeased into her brain unless she sees sexy music videos."

"She's in her jumparoo looking at her monkey rather sexily now. All your fault."

"Fin has started humping pillows... have we found the cause?"

Bye.

^^ Unfortunately, when you come into a thread & start spouting your "facts" & basically say that everyone who watches TV are stupid, are not able to research on their own, nor read, with all due respect what did you expect? Everyone to say "Oh MommaCat, you are right, all this 'evidence' has shown that watching TV makes me want to have sex through subliminal messages" I'm sorry but it's just not going to happen.

Two pp's have posted links to debunk your info (think they maybe the same link but haven't read the 2nd one yet), did you just choose to ignore this?

I think the reasons why most people haven't posted studies to counteract your opinion is:-
1. They can't be arsed (maybe watching TV )
2. Your 'studies' are quite questionable so see no point to provide a counter argument when yours do not prove, they theorize.

I'm sure there are more reasons.....

Mcat- I haven't seen a single post from you where I haven't been personally offended. I think my favourite was the one about being unable to follow a consecutive stream o f words? Was that the same one which implied because we watch a little tv we don't/can't read? or the one where you implied that because we watch tv it means we watch a billion hours of tv a day and do nothing else!

You come across as rude and self righteous with the inability to have a normal conversation or debate. People HAVE provided you with evidence against our arguments but you strike me as someone who cannot be wrong.

As a pp poster asked- how old are you? Because you really can't expect to offend everyone in here without getting it back, and by expecting that your bahavin like a spoilt little brat!

Oh And genuine interest now and a question for mcat ....

Are you worried that your child will be picked on in the playground? It's just that my youth was spent pretending to be the pink power ranger with my friends, or hankering after the latest button moon doll..... I'm just wondering If it's crossed your mind that your lo is going to be considered different by other children and kids can be really cruel..

I'm not trying to offend with this question- I genuinely want to know the answer...

Sorry mommacat I didn't mean to upset you, I was just joking about. Nothing personal.

WOW!!!! think his may have gone a little far..Everyone has managed to offend each other...Hitlers antics have been discussed....Sex....All because people are expressing there OPINIONS

there are plenty of things in this world that people have 'proven' yet people still don't believe, if you believe in all this subliminal messaging...fine....others dont

I was one of those "I will NEVER let my child watch tv!" But then of course they are born and things change :) I dont let him watch anything but Sesame Street every morning. HE LOVES IT!!! And he is only three months old but he laughs with it, kicks his legs, pretty much glued to it. I bought him an Elmo and friends Christmas book the other day and he LOVES IT!! So he loves Sesame Street so how could I keep him from that ;) Plus it gives Mommy time to clean up herself, clean up the house, make him his bottle, clean bottles from night before and make myself breakfast. Plus I like to think its pretty educational

So let me get this right.

Mommacat... you grew up watching TV and yet are now a smart enough adult to go out, do your research and decide a TV is not something you want for your own child?
I grew up without a TV (well until I was 10), I read all the time and loved books. I was a brainy child. Incidentally I was also a neglected child so taking the TV away doesn't always equal a more enriched childhood. I'm now, as an adult, pretty obsessed with TV. I need it on even just as background noise else I feel a bit panicked.

Child with TV - Smart adult who can make a choice to not own a TV
Child with no TV - Smart adult who's obsessed with teh TV and feels "lonely" when it isn't on.

ETA - Despite my own TV isuses, my child is not a drooling, TV obessed child. We have TV off a lot when he is awake and when it is on we watch a lot of music TV and he pays no attention to the TV. He loves books and is VERY advanced for his age both mentally and physically. He does like Waybuloo and ITNG which both serve to help settle him down in the evening. He comes for cuddles and we watch together and read a matching ITNG or Waybuloo book at teh same time and point at pictures and talk etc. A TV doesn't equal a drooling idiot child

 OMGosh, one word... DELUSIONAL! I seriously worry for some people's children, I really do.

Bye.

I haven't really said anything in this thread but I've been lurking...... I have to say- you sound incredibly pretentious.

I also don't think you even read that this woman above was defending you.

Writing long diatribes about how everyone is stupid isn't going to win you a whole lot of support. There are small kernels of truth about what you said. Yes, watching TV produces Alpha waves, which can cause an almost comatose state. Yes, marketing companies try to entice viewers by carefully placed messaging- in the US TV commercials are louder then the show to get the potential consumers attention.

HOWEVER...the Academy of Pediatrics state that parents with children under 2 should exercise caution if letting a child watching TV and over that age should let their children watch no more then 2 hours of TV a day. They don't say that TV should never be watched. I feel that I can monitor if I please what my daughter watches and doesn't and I personally can make up my own mind about what I believe and what I don't. I don't need the TV to tell me what to do just like I don't need some lady on the internet cherry picking a few things doing it either.

As for the Fox News comments- I'm not even going to debate you on that. If you can't see what's wrong with that poll then nothing I'm going to say will convince you otherwise, including common sense. I will however say this: The Huffington Post and CNN are as far left as Fox News is far right. I personally don't see any difference in how one reports over the other. ALL news in the United States is slanted. I read Fox News, and CNN, and Politico, and BBC, and Huffington Post..among others...... and then I make my own decisions based on what particular piece of information I'm reading. May I suggest you do the same instead of insulting large groups and demographics of people?

I'm confused about what your saying? I just wanted peoples opinions as to why they dont let their child watch tv as I was in two minds about it....Like i said..I don't agree with mommacats views, however I don;t think she deserves all the mickey taking for it..we all have our OPINIONS and that is hers, I was actually sticking up for her not slating her!!

Everyone has agreed with her that there are subliminal messages - but they don't affect us. We have said that we don't let our LO's see the tv 24/7 and all of that - all she has done from the start pretty much is insult us so no, I'm not going to take her seriously.

I'm also not going to rely on youtube videos where the producers can't spell.
