True Blood!

I would consider these books an Easy Read, personally.

I found Stephanie Meyer's writing style to be very uh... immature? Layman's Terms? I don't know quite how to word it. It was like she wrote what she thought, regardless of proper grammar and sentence structure... not that I am one to really be judgmental about that sort of thing.

With the Sookie Stackhouse novels, I find that it is written pretty much the same way as Sookie/Anna Paquin talks in the series. I'm only just starting the second book, but I'm very impressed with how well Anna Paquin did with capturing the Sookie character.

I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece or a 'must-read', but I do enjoy them. :)

Love IT!!! only just started watching it on channel 4 so have only seen episodes 1 and 2!!!

took all my will power not to read the spoliers!!!!

I found it hard to get through the Twilight books after the first. The first I could forgive because it was new and I was enjoying the teen-ness of it but after that it was tedium and outshone all the good ideas. The books could've been condensed by more than half and only been the better for it. But I did read them. I have mixed tastes and don't mind some bubblewrap in between my hard core intellectual reads! lol I might give them a go. DH would be able to get them out the library for me.

PB - the books are fun. A fun blend of genres and an interesting narrative voice (as Tyff said, Sookie is telling the story in her Louisiana vernacular) that keeps a lot of the plot cliches at bay. I found that when something predictable happened, Sookie would acknowledge that and make fun of it, with all sorts of great slang thrown in. So, the books kind of poke fun at themselves and it's enjoyable. The author isn't pretending that they're great literature. She's telling a good story and she's given the narrator a great voice. That's what makes them an enjoyable read.

Season 3 starts filming at the beginning of Dec :happydance: :happydance:
And book 10 is out in May ... woohooo

I've already finished the 8 books and hopefully waiting for the next book! I try to catch the TV series one night and decided to buy the DVDs right away. :)

Anyone read all 8 or 9 of the books?

What do you think? Need to chat, need to off-load True Blood excitement and intrigue!

I read most, but then had my lo so haven't had the time

I'm on Dead To The World (4th book? I think?).

SUPER SUPER SUPER HAPPY ABOUT ERIC AND SOOKIE HOOKING UP!!!!!

TBH I really, really enjoyed all of the books I have read so far. It was a good few years ago that I read them, then read book 7 and 8 last year and have reserved book 9 at the library. They are fun to read, nice and easy to get your head round and I found that I got to know the characters really well.
I can see a lot of differences between the books and the TV show, tbh with you I really don't recall such graphic sex scenes in the books! My sister sat down to watch this with her teenage son (bearing in mind she had already read the books) and was mortified, bless her!
Sookie is great though, exactly how she should be.

yaay its wednesday! true blood tonight how exciting haha. was a scary end last episode i think

OMG I know!
It gets a bit up and down over the next few books but hell yeah Eric is hot hot, and so much more interesting than Bill, who makes me mad! Grr I do not like him, if they end up together in the end I'll be SO cross!
There are some great Eric/Sookie cross-over lines in the next few books and a twist with his memory
Have you met Quinn yet? Cannot remember if he comes in yet?
Oh and Alcide, what do you think?
Ohhh and Jason ...

I love true blood!

Am not reading the spoilers! :sulk:

So what happened at the end of the last episode then when Channel 4 lost it and then didn't have the courtesy to tell us what happened? I have a guess.

She finds that woman her brother was shagging dead.

Just finished Season 2 and can't believe we have to wait another 9 months for season 3!!!! It's like waiting to give birth! The waiting is killing me!!!!!!!!! Good thing only another twentysomething days until I can get my vampire fix through Edward Cullen!

Me too. I couldn't believe they did that!

Yup! Me!
I've read all nine and I've seen both seasons.
I just hooked my mum on the show, too! :)

:thumbup::thumbup:
What did you think of the ending of book 9?

Which vamp did you think her grandfather was talking about?

I know Bill loves her, but hes done unspeakable things to her, is kinda slimy (IMHO) and has lied to her again and again and is sort of wet.
Ok, Eric is loud and brash and controls her, but is just a nicer character, and seems to bounce off her better, they make a more dynamic couple.

Apparently she's been contracted to write another 3 books, so I'm almost of the mind that she hasn't totally made up her own mind which one Sookie ends up with.
Ohhh have you read the short story in 'Many Bloody Returns' - Dracula Night? It points heavily to Eric again.

I'm trying to work out which actor they'll use for Quinn too ....

Also Sam, I cannot see her leaving him single, but I also cannot see Sookie with him? Can you? The only thing that makes me think she'll possibly end up with him is the mortality thing.

As for Jason, is much bigger in the TV series (at least the 1st two - as opposed to the books) do you think thats a reflection of their intention to make each book into a season?

Opinions please!!

Ps - I'm not totally obsessed .. my DF found me all of the books and short stories in PDF so I have them on my E-Reader - hence why I've read the collections as well

Okay, I am trying spoilers for the first time, so I'll try to answer everything here! :)

I think it could truly be either vampire. I'm rooting for Eric, too. In the books, he is way more interesting and complex than Bill. Bill does acknowledge Eric's joie de vivre and that he understands why Eric and Sookie would be very good for each other. But he is still the dark horse in the running. Charlaine Harris is slowly letting him redeem himself, and to be fair, many of the betrayals have not been entirely his choice. I think his simple farming roots and his grip on his humanity have let him be a very gentlemanly introduction to vampires for Sookie. Has she outgrown him, though? Eric likes power, but he has a far better understanding and respect for Sookie's independence. Bill would get very paternal and could be a bit smothering. It will be interesting, either way. But yeah, go Viking, go! :)
The show is an entirely different matter. I think they have done an excellent job of casting Bill on the show and that they are going to twist storylines to make sure that Stephen Moyer stays central to the storyline. This will be challenging, even for Season Three. They have obviously created another reason for him to be kidnapped and tortured, as his database does not exist in the show. And they are making choices that seem to really incriminate Eric (that whole plotline with the Queen and Eric getting Lafayette to sell V). I also wonder if Anna Paquin and Alexander Skarsgard will have the same chemistry that she and Stephen Moyer do?
Casting for Quinn. Hmmmmm. In the book, I think he's white (she talks about his olive skin tone?), but I have a feeling that they might go black or even East Asian. He would have to be a very big, muscular actor. I don't even have a guess, to be honest.
Alcide Herveaux is another one that I am curious about. He is described as another very large, built man with lots of shaggy black hair. I almost start thinking about some of the X-men casting, like Wolverine?
Will they do Claudine? I think so, because they are supposed to reveal that Sookie is not human in the next season, apparently.
Slightly off topic, but I have spotted some confusing choices in the show. They are making out that V is so potent that just a drop will get you high and that drinking a full vial is "ODing", so then why was Sookie okay when she drank more than that from Bill and Eric? If blood sharing sometimes happens between fangbangers and vampires, why are the fangbangers okay if they have a few mouthfuls straight from a vampire, but V junkies have serious consequences with that same amount? They haven't really addressed that yet.
Anyway, I am more curious than anything about how the show will interpret each novel. I don't know if they will do all 10-13 books, though. That would be a very long series. As I've said before, I feel that each medium stands on it's own very well, so changes in the show don't take away from the books for me.
I was sent the novels as e-books, too, but I got the box set because I find it easier to read. It is such fun, easy, relaxing stuff and there are so many little plot twists and new characters in each that I am enjoying re-reading them at the moment. Haven't read the short story, though. I'll have to try to find it.

When I was reading about Quinn for the first time, I kept picturing Vin Diesl. Then I did some searching around on the internet, and I guess that's who Charlain Harris used as inspiration for the character!

I was like "THAT'S WHY!!!" ha ha ha
