Has anyone actually stopped to think that formula companies would need to have a source from which to print information about BFing? They wouldn't be allowed to just make it up so they've obviously got the advice from some form of "reliable" source.

But who cares anyway?? The service is there is doesn't mean you HAVE to use it!!! GET OVER IT.. Jheeze louise

I hardly think anyone is suggesting that they are telling breastfeeding women that breastmilk gives babies cooters.
It is however subtly misleading and outdated in some VERY important areas despite the huge amount of funding available in order to provide accurate and up to date advice and SOME people feel that it is underhanded and counter productive.
It doesn't however mean that anyone who holds this opinion is sitting at home in a tin foil hat, painting placards. So what should we get over?
What's wrong with debate, discussion and respect for each others opinions whilst disagreeing with them.

I never said anything about breast milk giving babies "cooters" so not quite sure why you felt the need to say that:shrug:?

And I think people should get over the fact the advice is there.. If people are that het up about it ignore it. If people are intelligent enough to know the advice is "outdated" then find a source that was wrote more recently although I think you'll find with the government controlling so many aspects of FF (for example no advertising, no points with loyalty cards etc etc) FF companies would need to have BFing advice of a certain standard in order for it to be publicly available

Thats what I was thinking but I wasnt 100% sure it was the same person!:dohh:

I find it quite condescending that the government think people who would have perhaps chosen to breastfeed would change their minds and be swayed by formula adverts.

Unfortunately many women choose to formula feed simply because it is seen as normal to them. Advertising only reinforces this. In countries where advertising of formula is allowed, breastfeeding rates are much lower. It may be condescending but unfortunately it is true.

Give more credit to most new mums who are not going to be looking at it and thinking "right thats it sod bothering with bf when I can just make up a bottle" not everyone thinks like that

You're right, however breastfeeding can be really hard
and many women run into problems. Unless they get the right support, they may not know how to solve those problems and therefore think that formula feeding is their only option.

It's the helplines that bothers me the most to be honest. If a breastfeeding woman rang up in the middle of the night, worried and upset because she thought her baby wasn't getting enough milk, I'm pretty sure a formula company would give different advice to the LLL! To be honest, even most health professionals in the NHS aren't able to offer solutions to some of the more complex problems, so I highly doubt that a formula company will provide answers when a much easier and more obvious answer is to start supplementing.

and a lot more women see breast feeding as natural!! where i live, everyone assumed i would breast feed when i fell pregnant with Riley because its natural!
i dont think anyone is denying that breastfeeding is hard... but in my opinion (as a mum that has breast fed and formula fed) breastfeeding is easier. you don't have to sit about waiting for the milk to be the right temperature, you don't have to wait for the water to boil, you don't have to spend nearly £10 on a tub of milk that usually lasts less than a week! i would much rather breastfeed, but it wasn't an option with Josh. i tried my hardest but it didn't happen! so while breastfeeding is hard (and no-one is saying it isn't!!) i think formula feeding mums need help & support too!

Of course formula feeding mothers need support, I don't think anyone is saying that they don't. But would you want formula feeding advice from a breastfeeding organisation with the ulterior motive to keep suggesting relactation and expressing to increase your supply? I doubt it! I just think that a formula company are probably not the best people to be giving breastfeeding advice. :)

No one expects them to give bf advice, they are not experts on it that is why if you where to stumble across the site it gives advice on where to get proper support from.

https://www.smanutrition.co.uk/Know...g-support-/Information/tabid/473/Default.aspx

I dont understand why some are saying it gives false or missleading advice when feeding is just a fraction of the info it has on there.

And if a breastfeeding site was to give me advice on where to get support and who to call on ff id gladly take it rather then calling them manipulative

thank you Smokey  ... that's what i've been trying to get across.. i just seemed to go a very arse about tit way of doing it!

I didn't say that you did. I was, by way of a ridiculous statement, trying to show that noone is saying that they are giving information that is obviously outrageous. what has been pointed out is that in my opinion and others information is in some parts misleading, outdated and therefore more likely to lead to unsuccessful breastfeeding and subsequently use of their product. The fact that the information at face value appears credible means that it is unlikely to be challenged and the assumption that the advice must be reliable really just illustrates the point that intelligent people will make the same assumptions.
Who ignores issues that they get het up about  If we did there'd be no debates section, or it would be pretty boring.

IMHO to term formula feeding as "artificial" is underhand to me

Not that this has anything to do with my OP but:

ar·ti·fi·cial (ärt-fshl)
adj.
1.
a. Made by humans; produced rather than natural.
b. Brought about or caused by sociopolitical or other human-generated forces or influences: set up artificial barriers against women and minorities; an artificial economic boom.
2. Made in imitation of something natural; simulated: artificial teeth.
3. Not genuine or natural: an artificial smile.

So, formula milk is definitely artifical. Some will always like/use that term, others always won't so it's a very fruitless topic to debate IMHO.

How patronising - thanks for educating us on the definition of artificial. You must think all FF's are thick because
a) we don't know what artificial means
and
b) we obviously get so swayed by formula advertising that it would deter us from BF!!!

My point was that 'artificial' means 'artificial' and using the term was not, therefore, underhand but accurate. I also said I understood that some people clearly would not like or use the term yet others would be fine by it.

If b) were true I would in effect be patronising myself. Way to go :dohh:

And as you know it has upset some people so why continue to add fuel to the fire by putting up the definition of it?

I don't care if I get in trouble for this but I reckon you started this thread to stir the pot and you are enjoying the whole thing.

christ! So basically women that FF are doing wrong by their babies? And women that BF think everyone should BF? Thats the conclusion iv come to from reading this thread!! Every women has a choice, where i live BF is rammed down your throat, so why is it ok for BF to be 'advertised' like this but a formula company cant support BF? Yes they sell formula but the people that answer the phones on the support line are more than likely mums themselves! Cow and gate even has midwives answering the phones, and they have to encourage you to BF! I get he feeling mums that BF think they are better than mums that FF, at the end of the day we still feed our babies aswell! Formula websites by LAW have to promote BF too! I honestly dont see why people are getting on their high horse about it.

i personally don't see anything wrong with it. Some people choose to bottle feed and that's fine, doesn't mean they shouldn't get equal help as us mums who choose to breastfeed. What else the baby gonna do if the mum doesn't wanna breastfeed...starve? I think it's important to give information about both (in the correct places of course) and as long as they're offering advice about both FF and BF then i don't see a problem x

I agree, the defination of what artificial was not needed, we are not stupid and we know what it means.

It maybe an accurate assessment of it but still not needed IMHO.

I dont think thats the case by what people are saying at all.
I think a few people just think formula companies should stay away from all forms of advertising, magazines and such no matter what the help they are offering is.

I'm sorry but it is attitudes like this that REALLY upset me. Yes, i think everyone should try to breastfeed. If it doesn't work out then obviously formula is the right thing to do. There is NO need to accuse BFing mums of looking down on anyone else for their choices, and i find that incredibly rude. I could say that i'm scared to talk about breastfeeding for fear of someone thinking i'm judging them.

I'm currently really struggling with my supply and i know for a fact that lots of people on here will have very good advice for me and won't judge if i have to switch to formula.

This is not what the thread is about, people are so quick to jump into a BF/FF war and it doesn't need to be that way.

I started this thread to engage in discussion and you're right I do enjoy a healthy debate. I don't enjoy watching people attack each other :(

I never slated anyone or anyone's choice. I clarified my views again and again as the thread veered off topic and into a different debate altogether.

Honestly! All I was saying is I thought this advert was a bit sneaky. I said it on here because it was related to babies, I said it in this forum so as not to engineer a BF or FF bias.

Im sorry im not meaning to upset anyone. But i didnt even want to try BF, it doesnt appeal to me, but if others want to do it that fine obviously 'breast is best' but thinking that FF shouldnt be allowed to be advertised at all is irresposible, its like saying vegans shouldnt have info on how to get the nutrients they need. Im not getting into a BF/FF debate, everyone makes their own choices and everybody needs info to make the right choice for them.
