Underhand tactics - formula companies

Is it an advert when it is on their own packaging? I suspect that doesn't count.

It is but it is available to anyone who orders it. Altho' it's not on tv, radio or in print. See, case in point, they are sneaky b *****ds!

Well I'm just not sure that advertising would apply if is someone has ordered something from a company. I don't know the rules, I'm just speculating. If you've requested a pack of info and things from a company then I would've thought that was just information about product range. If you can't mention it anywhere then how would anyone know it was made?

Well, I got my Aptamil baby club pack today - with the free polar bear. Also in the pack was a book on baby nutrition and feeding. On the lip of the folder there is an ad. It reads:

'leading research into infant nutrition

Our team of paediatricians, nutritionists and scientists has led the way in the development of infant nutrition for over 50 years. Today, we continue to develop unique formulas that help you give your baby the right balance of nutrition should you decide to move on from breastfeeding.'

Underneath is a graphic containing all of their infant formulas, including Stage 1 (First Milk) and Stage 2 (Hungry baby Milk).

The BF disclaimer is in much smaller print on the back and the rest of the pack is very much non formula specific.

Do any of you think this 'advert' violates the ban on advertising?

Its not breaking the law because you ordered it, thats like picking up a carton of stage 1 formula and complaining because they advertise it on their own tin

But so is an isle of baby formula in the shop, its available to anyone that wants to use it.

Im not being picky here but its getting to the point where I get the impresion all formula should be hiden away in the back store room and only brought out if someone askes for the "secret stuff"

But all I wanted was a free cuddly polar bear!! ;)

I know what you mean and I think (0 - 6m) it should be promoted and made available but not by Aptamil.

Yes, i'm inclined to agree. I suppose they see it as if you're ordering their info pack/freebies they are entitled to promote and advertise thier products, been as you requested it in the first place.

But you ordered the free bear from Aptamil so you can't expect them not to promote their product when you placed the order?

I think people over in the UK should be happy about the regulated advertising as over here it's on TV, and ALWAYS in the flyers on sale etc... I mean yes, you want them to follow the rules etc... but at least you have them :) It's better than some places!

Paulo Coelho: Intelligent people discuss ideas. Fools discuss how people should behave

I am going to post this in every thread that turns in to a debate. Just saw it today and it struck me as an excellent thought! :)

But this is the dabate section so its inevatable :)

It wasn't in debate section in the beginning!
I know, I know, just couldn't help myself when I saw this on FB. Paulo posts interesting thoughts every day and finally I saw one that could be applied here ;) A lot of times people forget about the original topic and start slagging off each other to blow off some steam, perhaps?

Yes, I think some people want to blow off steam but others don't like when people are thoughtless and insensitive. The latter is hardly being a fool. Just because Paulo Coelho is an author doesn't mean everyone subscribes to his 'thoughts of the day'!

Authors usually know how to put in words what many people believe and think but don't know how to express, lol.
Tried to make this thread a bit lighter and more humorous, but I don't think it worked, haha... definitely did not want to ignite another debate! :)

Don't see the issue of a debate being in the debates thread. It is a very new section so folk not too used to starting posts in threads here. Has been in here for quite a while now.

But why order anything from them, especially a polar bear with 'aptamil' written all over it, if you feel this way about them???
