Welcome to 'Trying To Conceive Over 35'

Ali & Jess--what is the Paleo diet: If it involves eating squash I AM THERE! :haha:

I know, I love veggies and squash, especially spaghetti squash. Sweet potatoes are yummy too :)

Here is a WIKI article about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_diet

It is based upon our ancestors and what they originally ate back then. The assumption is that our bodies are designed to eat those foods, not the foods we eat today. So if we go back to what they ate, our bodies will run more smoothly, and we will have more energy and so on.

I just find that my body is happier when I am not feeding it gluten and dairy. Course the dairy part is more difficult because I LOVE CHEESE, YOGURT, ICE CREAM!!! :haha: So I try to stick to the veggies, roots, nuts, meats, fungi, etc, then have 1 serving of dairy a day, like a yogurt or maybe some cheese on whatever I'm cooking. I do feel that the calcium and the protein in dairy is good for you providing you do it in moderation.

It's the protein in dairy that I love- I have switched to skim milk...I don't drink al ot of it,maybe a glass a day and that is rare when I do. But I like it on cereal, etc. But it's hard to avoid all the fats...I guess I need some to proces the protein. No butter or anything (I got too relaxed about all that :haha:). I have no problem telling myself "no". I said no to my beloved coffee for about 6 months and have now allowed myself one small cup a day. BUT I have to watch my tendency to add something like toast and jelly with it [-X. Just plain cracker once in a while. Years ago when I was prego with Teagen I just ate lean beef broiled and saltine crackers :haha: I was very lean but I know I lacked certain necessary vitamins so introduced veggies again, etc.

Jess- what is your take on dairy as a protein, e.g., skim milk, hard cheese, etc? When you are trining do you allow it?

I actually don't like milk much, well other than chocolate milk, but I get a tummy ache from drinking milk, but interestingly enough, not from cheese or yogurt! So I try go get my calcium from those instead of milk. Then when I make oatmeal I use a little milk, but since it is mixed in with the oatmeal it doesn't bother me too much.

I think most people that are active working out drink skim milk or some form of milk, but probably not so much cheese? It will be interesting to see what Jess says.

Coy...
Milk has mixed reviews. I rarely drink it (only with cereal maybe 6 times a year) and when I do it is never :nope: for nutritional reasons, particularly for protein. It is not the most efficient way of delivering protein to your muscles.:nope: I never drink milk during competition season. :nope: I have a slight lactose intolerance but I LOVE LOVE LOVE ice cream and yogurt. Ice Cream makes me Happy!! :yipee: But I only do those in strict moderation.

If you are trying to put protein in your diet to accommodate the needs of your muscles (muscles maintain and grow through proteins/amino acids), in my not so humble opinion, the best way to do this is through either protein drinks or lean chicken, turkey, and fish.

I choose protein drinks (Whey Protein as opposed to soy) first because they provide the perfect amounts of carbs and fat that aid in breaking down protein allowing your body to utilize it more efficiently without getting rid of it before it can be used. The lean meats, such as poultry and fish do the same when incorporated with the right carbs and healthy fats.

I like steak too! But, it can take the body up to 72 hours to process just 1/4 pound of red meat. When I am in competition mode, that is a great thing because during that time, the protein of the red meat is utilized effectively. However, red meat is not only higher in calories than poultry and fish, it is also not nearly as lean. So, I only eat it about twice a month.

I hope this helps!! Let me know if you have any other questions! Health and Nutrition are two of my favorite topics!!!

Sweet! So my affinity for eating broiled skinless chicken breast is a good thing! Dh and I used to get the whey proetin shakes drinks--I am going to see if I can drink that during pregnancy because it comes in chocolate which, maybe isn't so great, but it's gggrrreat iykwim! :haha: Fish I can't handle- I spent 20 years in Alaska working fish-camps and eating King or Chum salmon everyday makes me wanna yak  lol!

Thanks for the heads up on milk. I will stick to skim about 2 - 3 times a week just for calcium. Oh and ice cream  lol

Pet Peeeeeves!

So I walk into the laundry room where we keep the trash can and there is garbage piled all over my dryer. When I ask about it I get the answer "The garbage was full"

Dirty dishes piled on the edge of the sink instead of being placed inside the sink for washing.

Empty water bottles in the fridge. Dont tell me you didn't notice it was empty!! :grr:

The dog piddles slightly the floor but "forgets" to ask out. That's just an offense! :trouble: lol

The girls use a dish while eating crackers to catch crumbs then dump the dish on the carpet before placing it on the edge of the sink.

DD gets a dollar every week for doing her chores:make her bed, scrape dishes, feed the dog. But after dad and I make her bed, feed the dog, and scrape her dishes - she still wants the dollar  KIDS! Btw, she told me (when I asked) that I didn't deserve the dollar for doing her chores :saywhat:

Lol, sometimes these peeves and irritants get comical!

BTW.. My boss just dropped a $50 gift certificate off to me. She was so happy with all the work I have been doing for some of our troubled clients. YAY!

Way to go Ali! Make that mulah, lol, it's nice to get rewarded isn't it? :hugs:

Jess- this is driving me crazy! Ia m trying to find a whey protein drink mix that is safe for pregnant women...I am guessing taurine is out but did ask my doc about creatine [-o< just waiting for acall back...Plus I am not sure what "lean mass activators" are  I'd love to get the pre-made mix so that I can cut some of the un-needed carbs- makes it easier to monitor :p

Hi ladies, I have just turned 35 last week,,,,, and really feels the girls are getting old. :winkwink:
Would you mind if I join, I scrolled the the forum and found some really good advice, and some chats I can totally relate to. :flower:

I am married to the man of my dreams, I have a 15yr old daughter who longs for a brother or sister. I live in South Africa, Cape Town and work as a New Vehicle sales Executive.
Not many or my family nor my friends knows what I am doing through, don't really want to discuss it with them, I think only once you walk down this road do you understand how difficult this really is.:dohh:

I have done a few procedures and mess, but still BFN, but I have faith that I and all the ladies here will get that long awaited BFP,,,,,
Baby dust to all!:dust::dust::dust:

Hi Ladies!
Welcome MommyMel and any other newbies I may have forgotten!
I've had a lot of catch up reading to do- you ladies have been busy busy posting loads of stuff while I've been MIA....
I have been super duper sick with a nasty chest cold/cough but seem to be on the mend now!
There is so much to respond to, so I'm not going to scroll back, just tackle the ones that are sitting on the top of my brain....
like Coy..... every woman gains differently for each pregnancy.... and unless you are headed towards gaining more than 40lbs total, you shouldn't be worried about it a wit!
you were lean to start and so you have a larger range of acceptable, healthy weight gain and from what I can see, you have nothing to worry about at all!!! Eat healthy... your baby needs the weight for proper brain growth, bones, and don't forget the extra weight due to increased blood volume (50% by the time you deliver), fluids like the amniotic fluid and that necessary organ called the placenta!! it all weighs.... and you need it... IMHO your doc is an idiot. Eat, gain and be merry!!!

I'm planning on doing the Paleo diet too.... well, a modified version of it. I've been reading a book called "Wheat Belly" and it definitely speaks to the benefits of eliminating all wheat products from your diet. I'm about halfway through and can say that the science and reasoning behind this doctor's book seem sound to me. The Paleo diet would serve me well if I'm trying to eliminate wheat from my diet. The best thing is that it's not about calorie counting or depriving myself of any good nutritious food... it's about eating MORE vegetables, fruit and eating healthy... a good lifestyle change... I eat waaaaay too many processed carbs and when I'm sad or depressed I head straight for toast, cereal, or pasta as my feel good foods.... but then I don't feel better.... I feel worse... SO - baby needs more veggies and fruits anyways... I need to eat healthier anyways.... and I suspect that eating without wheat will improve all aspects of my well being...

I'm sure there's more for me to comment on, but not thinking fully right now... I do hope this finds all my BnB ladies well and happy and covered in baby dust!
~ Phil.

AFM~

Last week we went for our first trimester screening and my blood tests came back normal, and the baby looks great! The nuchal translucency ultrasound was normal and a nasal bone found (significantly reducing the chance of Down's). Organs look good and there are two arms with hands and fingers and two legs with feet and toes!! Everything looks lovely...
will try to put up an ultrasound pic in case you want to see my beautiful babes and get inspired! Don't give up, ladies! I have faith for all of you!

Looks like a little girl phil,so glad everything looking good with scan and tests

It's my avatar, Coy... a little dark, I don't know how to lighten it up! will see what I can do!
Thanks Alin, I have a feeling it's a girl... but will find out for sure (if babes cooperates!) on August 10th!

I didn't do a good job of introducing myself to the new ladies, did I?
Hi all, I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and I'm 40 and dh is 42- this is my #2 and his #1.... we tried on our own for awhile, went through all the testing and were diagnosed with "unexplained infertility".... so since we are getting up there in age, opted to increase our chances and went for IUI which, for us, was successful! I am now 13 weeks pregnant and so thankful.
I have a 15 year old daughter from a previous relationship who is so happy to be getting a new sibling (she's hoping for a girl- says boys are stinky!)
hmmm, what else? I was a massage therapist for almost 10 years but have decided to retire and focus on family and babes.... my clients almost revolted.... they are happy and sad... happy I'm having a baby, but sad they are losing me.

I think that's it for now... we've decided (well, I've decided... ggl) to do the baby's room in a woodland theme and I've been having fun buying all sorts of things for it... I will have to open a flickr account so I can post pics on here, right Coy? I will sort that out this weekend... I have friends coming over to help paint the baby's room tomorrow... I want it a cafe au lait light brown colour... nice neutral and a good backdrop for all sorts of foresty goodness....

Chat soon, ladies! If I find myself a night owl tonight, I'll be on for our ladies from across the pond!

WOW.. I leave the computer for a few hours and so much to catch up on!

Welcome MommyMel glad you have joined our little group! GL to you in your babymaking plans! I see that you are going to try IVF in the next month or 2  I hope you get a :bfp:

I'm still feeling crappy, and trying to get my packing done. Between nausea and my headache, I'm not getting very far. With the nausea I have been feeling the past few days, I am almost thinking I should take a HPT again! I normally feel great after AF comes, but this time I am feeling pretty bleh. Maybe I just have a flu bug or something. Either way, it better go away because I am jumping in my car tomorrow and driving to Statesville, NC, or further north. Then maybe even to my destination in Canada by Sunday. We'll see how far I get!

Coy don't be too strict on yourself, your Dr is crazy, you need to eat and eat well at this time. Your baby needs nourishment. So eat! Indulge on occasion, and the rest of the time keep it healthy, but don't limit your calories. I find that if I eat slowly, and drink water while I'm eating, my stomach has the time to send the I'm full signal to my brain and I don't overeat.

I weighed myself this evening and I was dreading it. I was convinced that I had gained 10 lbs this past month with all the hormones and all the crap that I have eaten lately. I was pleasantly surprised that I had only gained 3 lbs, and since I normally weigh myself in the morning, that could just be normal weight that you fluctuate during the day! YAY! Man that made me feel a lot better! I do plan on getting back on the eating healthy bandwagon when I get to Canada. I know I feel better when I eat healthy, and eliminating wheat and wheat products is key for me.

So that is what is up with me! Now back to packing.. :dohh:
