TiaTammy- don't get scared or disocuraged! Phil (Philomena) posted on here today ... she is 40 and got prego first attempt with IUI...very similar story to yours, nothing 'wrong' with either her or dh so unexplained--but she's about 8 weeks prego now
She could fill you in more on the process of IUI
And my doc tells me at 36-40 as long as your healthy you should still have healthy eggs!
This is going to sound very crazy but i don't even know what IUI is...I guess I better do some research just in case that is something I might have to do...
Hi Ladies, and welcome to those I haven't met 'officially' yet!
IUI is Intra-Uterine Insemination. So DH and I were diagnosed with 'unexplained infertility' which basically means they don't know why we weren't conceiving on our own. I'm healthy, DH is healthy, good sperm, open tubes and healthy eggs.... So with IUI essentially they just give you the best chance for the magic to happen. I took clomid to increase my chances of having mature eggs ready to go. The clomid works by fooling your brain into producing more estrogen- the estrogen ripens the immature eggs which are getting ready to be released by the follicle. This also accounts for the slight risk of increased twins as it can ripen more than one egg at a time! There are other meds which do the same thing without the crazy emotional side effects of clomid (wish my doc had told me that to start with! woohee was I rollercoastery on the clomid!)
So then you watch for your LH surge and when your OPK goes positive (I highly recommend the Clearblue digitals with the happy face) you call in and they take you the next day to be inseminated. We went in first so DH could do his thing, and they take his swimmers and clean them up and make them all sparkly and then the millions and millions of his best swimmers are ready to do their thing. A couple of hours later we were in the office and a nurse did the actual insemination which goes past your cervix and directly into your uterus..... it took hardly any time at all and was not uncomfortable in the least.
Then we went for lunch. *grin*
So the benefit of IUI is that it circumvents any issues with CM and as long as your tubes are open, and you ovulate, it gives you the best chance to let the magic happen.
Now DH doesn't have any issues with the number of swimmers etc... but this is also a very, very effective way to hedge your chances when DH does have a motility or numbers issue.
We feel like it was well worth the investment and even the emotional rollercoaster caused by the clomid was worth it since we got lucky on our first try.
I was getting so disheartened by trying to do everything naturally, and still having AF show up. Sex was not fun anymore and I wasn't looking forward to it at all.... the strain of waiting and being disappointed each month was not fun and with my age, I wanted to do whatever was necessary to make our dream come true!
If we were unsuccessful with IUI three times in a row, then we would have gone to IVF because whatever it takes..... this bean is wanted and loved.... and wow, am I thankful I live in the time that I do so I have options and choices!!
Good Luck Ladies,
Jm1355, I hope this helped answer some questions!
