Welcome to 'Trying To Conceive Over 35'

TiaTammy- don't get scared or disocuraged! Phil (Philomena) posted on here today ... she is 40 and got prego first attempt with IUI...very similar story to yours, nothing 'wrong' with either her or dh so unexplained--but she's about 8 weeks prego now :happydance: She could fill you in more on the process of IUI  And my doc tells me at 36-40 as long as your healthy you should still have healthy eggs!

This is going to sound very crazy but i don't even know what IUI is...I guess I better do some research just in case that is something I might have to do...

IUI = interuterin insemination. It is where they take sperm that have been washed (read spun in a centrifuge to separate them from the semen) and then they insert the sperm using a catheter directly in your uterus. This helps for women that have a hostile cervix, and I'm sure a lot of other things. It also can be done in conjunction with fertility drugs to improve a woman's chances of getting pregnant. That is a high level explanation, its also one of the cheaper options, my Dr said it was $625 per cycle, and up to $950 per cycle if you need fertility drugs.

How do they know if you have a hostile cervix? I went to a FS and they looked at my ovaries (said there were lots of follicles...good thing) and they ran some blood test to check for ovary function and something else. But he didn't say anything about a "hostile cvervix." That sounds crazy!! ...and a little scary!!

I'm not sure if there is a way to tell if your cervix is hostile or not. I think instead they just call it secondary infertility, or fertility of unknown origins. But I'm new at this too, so I have no idea. I did read the URL that Coy posted about using Mucinex to help with CM issues. So maybe that is a way to help resolve that issue without going to the level of IUI. For me, that is my best option because I am using a sperm donor, and it has a much higher chance of taking. I still have one more month before I will be able to try IUI, and may try on my own again with donor sperm (that is what I did this past month). I have to wait to do IUI because we haven't done all the tests yet, we need my AF to arrive to complete the rest. UGH. That is why I'm doubly frustrated that I have a BFN and no AF!!! At least if the :witch: showed up I could move forward with the tests and IUI, so frustrating!

Sounds like you need to go see the FS and maybe do the tests and get an idea of what your options are? Or just keep trying the old fashioned way? :) :) Who knows? Maybe you are PG right now and just don't know it yet?

Tiatammy...

My name is Jessica (Jess) and I turned 40 in February. I am so ready for a little one!! And I totally understand what you mean by you don't have time to wait for medication to take effect. My DH wont even go to the FS with me. But I'm hoping that after a few more months of trying he will change his mind.

I pray for all the best for you!!! :)

Thankyou Jess, for the comforting words, It is so hard to stay positive when you have so many bringing up your age all the time. FRIENDS

OK...so there hasn't been anymore spotting since early this morning. I don't feel sad anymore but I think it is because my phone interview went really well for this new job I want.:happydance:
The recruiter loved me and told me I will meet with the 5 VP's next week sometime. The job pays quite a bit more than I make now and has better long term possibilities...which would be great for me and my potentially/hopefully growing family. So I'm keeping my FX'd for both the job and that AF doe NOT show her face this month!

AWESOME!!! GL Jess on both fronts :) I hope you get the job and get a BFP soon, now wouldn't that be great news? Sprinkling baby and job dust.. :haha:

I'm very bloated today. Mean anything???

Me too.. my abdomen is very distended. Has been for about 3 days now, pants fit around the waist, but my belly seems to be really full. Let me know if you find out what it means!!

Hi ladies!

Hm, been going through the posts :coffee: ...............

On the age issue. Don't worry about it! is my best advice. I did for a little while but then deicded I didn't need the added stress and that I would just take evry possible option to increase my chances  Stay healthy, don't smoke, drink, drugs, or think unhappy thoughts :haha: lol, I know, it's hard to stay positive! That's because we're women and we want stuff now.

On hostile cervix: basically I think it is just hostile cm in the cervix...read this article:

https://www.amazingpregnancy.com/pregnancy-articles/244.html

And all of the articles I have read say just about the same thing. One important note...On taking Robitusin, they say to use the product that contains Guifenessin only otherwise you may impede your progress. This is why I just purchased guiffenesin (or however it's spelled :haha:) tablets. Supposed to take it 5 days before and the day of ovulation.

Jess- glad you're not feeling sad anymore, it does happen--welcome to hormones!

Hi Ladies, and welcome to those I haven't met 'officially' yet!

IUI is Intra-Uterine Insemination. So DH and I were diagnosed with 'unexplained infertility' which basically means they don't know why we weren't conceiving on our own. I'm healthy, DH is healthy, good sperm, open tubes and healthy eggs.... So with IUI essentially they just give you the best chance for the magic to happen. I took clomid to increase my chances of having mature eggs ready to go. The clomid works by fooling your brain into producing more estrogen- the estrogen ripens the immature eggs which are getting ready to be released by the follicle. This also accounts for the slight risk of increased twins as it can ripen more than one egg at a time! There are other meds which do the same thing without the crazy emotional side effects of clomid (wish my doc had told me that to start with! woohee was I rollercoastery on the clomid!)
So then you watch for your LH surge and when your OPK goes positive (I highly recommend the Clearblue digitals with the happy face) you call in and they take you the next day to be inseminated. We went in first so DH could do his thing, and they take his swimmers and clean them up and make them all sparkly and then the millions and millions of his best swimmers are ready to do their thing. A couple of hours later we were in the office and a nurse did the actual insemination which goes past your cervix and directly into your uterus..... it took hardly any time at all and was not uncomfortable in the least.
Then we went for lunch. *grin*

So the benefit of IUI is that it circumvents any issues with CM and as long as your tubes are open, and you ovulate, it gives you the best chance to let the magic happen.
Now DH doesn't have any issues with the number of swimmers etc... but this is also a very, very effective way to hedge your chances when DH does have a motility or numbers issue.

We feel like it was well worth the investment and even the emotional rollercoaster caused by the clomid was worth it since we got lucky on our first try.

I was getting so disheartened by trying to do everything naturally, and still having AF show up. Sex was not fun anymore and I wasn't looking forward to it at all.... the strain of waiting and being disappointed each month was not fun and with my age, I wanted to do whatever was necessary to make our dream come true!
If we were unsuccessful with IUI three times in a row, then we would have gone to IVF because whatever it takes..... this bean is wanted and loved.... and wow, am I thankful I live in the time that I do so I have options and choices!!

Good Luck Ladies,
Jm1355, I hope this helped answer some questions!

Philomena!! Thank you so much. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Reading the posts on this thread helps me a bit with the TWW...

I still don't have any spotting and my BBs are still sore. And I'm still very sleepy ALL day!!
But still a little cramping and AF is suppose to make her presence known somewhere around the 25th or 26th. Don't really know what is going on with my body but praying it is NOT PMS...

Thanks again!! :hugs:

Jm1355 and Alicat- I have my fingers crossed for both of you!!
I don't know how to do it with the animations, but you should get GreyEyes to shower you with babydust!! She did it for me and I got preggers!!
