What do you do when going out?

Have to admit I make daily batches of bottles made up with formula and store them in the fridge then when we go out I put a couple of them in insulated bags to keep cold and I have a tommee tippee flask I fill with boiling water to warm the bottles when I need them.

Glad tro hear someone else does that! :)

My bottle making has changed as my LO gets older. I've always given her room temp bottles though. I too use a powder dispenser and bottles of water, it just meant I wasn't running a risk of carrying the bottles around for too long when I didn't know how long she was going to be in between feeds.

At night I always made them up in advance and put them in her room ready for feeding when she wakened. Now I just make one up for first thing in the morning, and leave it in her room in an insulated bottle bag.

I then make up her bottles one feed in advance - so when she finished one I make the next one, or else three hours has passed before I've blinked, she wants fed and I don't have a bottle ready!

We do this aswell allways have since day 1!!!

I boil the kettle 30 mins before we go out and then fill a flask before we leave (have a fisher price one) and then have a powder dispenser in my bag and sterlised bottles. I also always have a carton in my bag and one of the sterlising bags just in case we out for longer than expected.

I'm going to use the TT closer to nature bottles and powder dispensers.
I plan on measuring out the water and powder for night time feeds then just adding it before feeding.
With daytime feeds I like the idea of making up a bottle once you finish feeding ready for the next feed.

For going out I would just take the water in bottles and use the dispensers.

With my son I was caught short once, my train was cancelled and I had to run to the 24hr shop for a ready carton, I had bottles as I was going to my mums and she had powder there.

we do that too!

I havent been out for more than 4 hours yet so didn't need to take any bottles with me but just wondering what you all do? Esp when its not possible to heat up the bottle. Do you make it before you go?

If it was convenient (maybe long journey so kept them in the car) then I took 2 sterilised thermos flasks - one with very hot and one with cold to make it the right temp.
Other wise I used cartons.

I know everyone on here probably thinks I go on and on about heating milk up over 70degrees, but some people do just mix formula with cold powder and think its okay - but the risk is not worth it. The article below explains why and what the risks are. So always worth stocking up on some cartons if you can (and keep one in the car for emergencies).

It is hypocritical to sterislise the bottle and initially boil the water - only to allow it to go cold and then add powder and feed cold..as the powder isn't sterile!

I can never understand why parents are prepared to take this risk, often a baby can have an upset tummy and runny nappies and the parent has no idea why they are upset and poorly, or blames it on teething etc...

My two had their bottles cold and like it that way because they used to get it fed through a tube cos they were prem.
But if i was going out I would put my formula in the Tommee Tippee milk dispensers or i bought milk dispensers from boots then I mixed them up as a i need them x

It depends if you have to warm your bottles, but my LO will drink a bottle at room temp, so I fill a bottle with water and bring formula with me. When it is time to eat I just put the formula in the bottle shake and give it to her. My LO isn't very fussy about the temp of her bottle....if her bottle comes out of the fridge I do warm it for her, but again only to room temp, so if you can get you LO into the habbit of taking a room temp bottle it makes things a lot easier!!

We take bottles with cooled boiled water and top it up with hot water from his flask then add the powder so its the right temperature! You have to do whats best for you, i dont like the thought of making the bottles and leaving the milk out but i know lots of people who do this!

We make the bottles up first, before we go out... And now I feel really bad about it because none of you do that. :/

dont worry this is what i do too!! what do u think they used to do before all these powder dispensers and stuff im sure they jus made them up and took them out with them lol! x

Why is it better to add the powder just before feeding? Esp if the water has gone cold?

It isn't. Doing that carries a small risk of making LO poorly due to the powder not being sterile, and mixing it with cold water does not kill the bateria that may be present.

A lot of people do it this way anyway though - I wouldn't.

I've always taken cartons and a sterile bottle out.

I have to do this because of the milk Jax is on, it has to be prepared cold & the risk is minimal tbh. Compared to other every day risks that is.

I take a flask out with me if i'm going to be some time & just pour a little into the bottle to " air " it so its not mega cold, Previous to this milk hes on id use more hot water from flask though.

I just take water in a bottle & take powder in a little tub which fits in the changing bag fine, 75p from local supermarket & just add the powder when needed x

I take the bottle with the correct amout of water with me and a milk container with the right amount of milk. Add the milk to the water- shake - give to baby. lol
My son drinks his milk at room temp. But I just bought a TT flask where you put hot water in the flask and when you need to eat something up, you put the water in the plastic cover of the flask and put bottle/jar in and wait. lol
https://www.boots.com/en/Tommee-Tippee-Closer-to-Nature-Travel-Bottle-Warmer_998859/ I bought mine from Tesco's for £4.99

I would never add powder to cooled water :nope: I'm not sure why people who do this sterilise their bottles? Maybe someone could explain? :)

If I am going to somewhere I know i can heat a fridge temp bottle, I take a pre made one with me in Imis changing bag (the sides have insulated bottle holders) along with 3 ice packs but if i'm not sure whats happeningthen I take bottles and ready made cartons :)

if we are going to relatives house then i take ready made bottles with me and they go straight out of my fridge and into theirs. if we are going out somewhere else i take bottles and cartons. i wouldnt add powder to cool water as the reason for using hot water is that it is supposed to kill any bacteria in the milk.

My midwife told me there would be no problem of adding the milk powder to boiled cooled down water and give it to LO.
So far he never had an upset stomach or anything like that.

When going out I take a carton of ready made with a sterilised bottle out with me.:winkwink:
