Would you hire a wet nurse?

I'm sorry that I assumed that non drug using, transmittable disease carrying sources of breast milk was a given. I actually have to supplement with formula due to a low milk supply and there not being any affordable source of EBM available to me. I would prefer to use EBM from a donor or wet nurse.

Believe me, she is excluding them. It seems obvious! Good Lord.

Oops, posted same time as you, Seity!

i personally wouldn't. i would give donated milk (expressed obviously) if my baby was a preemie but even if he was full term i'd rather give formula over anyone else's milk than mine. i couldnt even let a sister do it (if i had one) but that's just because i personally would find it odd seeing someone else do my "duty" x

In all fairness though, if you make a statement like "And EBM from any source is better than formula" then you should expect to be challenged, and shouldnt mock people when they challenge that statement. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I disagree, it was very clear what Seity meant and challenging her seemed a pointless thing to do.

No a pointless thing was to state something like that in the first place,
I have no problem with voicing oppinions but a little tact on how you word things would be nice after all no matter how you butter it up stating ANY SOURCE still implys formula feeding is the worst possible thing.

I have no dought at all that seity didnt mean that but again tact in wording should be applyed as to not offend people then arguments and bad feeling dont follow

lmao what was meant was different types of breast ie foremilk and hindmilk and not the mothers, she was stating if the mother couldnt provide breast milk then the wet nurse's breast milk would be better than formula, which i am sorry is very true, even formula companies advise that breast milk is better. Not beating down on anyone at all, its personal choice but you cant argue with a fact, it is what it is!

to the answer i probably would feed EBM from someone else and use a wet nurse if she wouldnt take the bottles, not that i dont like it doesnt bother me just for ease of it and it would be cheaper. I am hoping to donate my EBM when i have the time it really does help neonatal babies too x

I would definitely give EBM (I guess I have to add from a reputable source now!) over formula any day of the week but I wouldn't hire a wet nurse to feed my baby direct, bfing is about more than just feeding for me so I wouldn't like to see my baby forming that bond with someone else. I wouldn't have a problem feeding someone else's baby though.

No, definately not. I would use EBM from a wet nurse though.

My aunt BF Omar when he was tiny up until he was around 4 mnths old twice or 3 times a week. I didnt have any milk to BF & she had her baby 2 wks after me. She's like a sister to me as our age is close. But when my friend offered, I didnt feel comfy about it & I nicely refused (well she gave it a try & Omar refused to latch on & I was happy). But with my aunt I didnt have any problems as she's family & very close to me. In my religion he's considered like her son now & her daughters & sons r Omar's sisters & brothers, & I like it. Now he has 2 sisters & 2 brothers :)

I was wondering as i've never really heard of a wet nurse before. How would you know that the person who is breastfeeding your child or is expressing for your child doesn't have an infection or something similar that could be passed onto your child? I would assume that if you were donating to a hospital you would be checked out and have the relevent tests but what if you are hiring someone?

i would assume wet nurses would have to be screened every so often to check, but what kind of infections would they get ??? sti?

oh good lord some of the posts

i believe too that any( Good, clean no druggie etc) milk is better than formula...and if i couldnt for some reason bf i would consider it...but i would definately use someones EBM!...

to be fair id much rather having a wet nurse of BF myself, use someones EBM etc than give formula to which you have no clue whos touched it, whats fell in it...dust, bugs you name it...(and yes ive read about it all lol)

From what i have read tonight from the web and please don't shout at me cause i'm not sure if it is all correct but chicken pox and hepitities if the mother has not been treated for the infections. I would assume they would have been screened like blood donors but if someone is doing it privately you never know. Like when Salma Hayak did it, was she screened first?

I have a horrible feeling this is another thread turning into a BF vs FF debate ...

The question was - would you use a wet nurse? Can we please avoid comments which are going to offend FF mums, BF mums or both?!!

It is just ridiculous to state that you don't want your baby getting cracked out or alcoholic EBM! Of course not! That is kind of a "duh" statement in my eyes, and even at that, it doesn't need to be made! I seriously think that Seity was excluding cracked out and alcoholic EBM. ;)

Well she didn't say she was excluding them. She said 'ANY SOURCE' so to me that means any.

Really? Because i read it to mean any source, ' such as herself, a relative, or a valid donor,' and that she didn't need to list the obvious exclusions like crack heads, cows, pigs and koalas.

I agree!! :D... I just feel that when someone offered their opinion/challenged someone elses opinion, they were mocked/laughed at. Hardly fair.

Maybe it's just me but I don't see anything to say this is turning into a bf v ff debate? It's going on quite nicely apart from people being a bit pedantic about wording.

I seem to have taken her comment literally whereas you seem to be assuming. Anyway, I am really interested in finding out more about what a wet nurse is and what it involves rather than starting a FFvBF debate.

I hope I'm wrong but it's just got the feeling of a thread that's heading in that direction (the thread is going down the is EBM always better than formula route for example).

There have been so many good threads that have had to be closed and I don't want this one to - I think it's a good question!
