We are having a barbecue this lunchtime and Micah is going to be in the garden with us while we cook. As we're BLW he'll be having some barbecued steak and veg. We're really looking forward to 'baby's first barbecue', but when I went into our local butcher to ask whether they could recommend something for a baby to have at a barbecue, (I thought they might make a burger with no salt in or something) the butcher said, "he's too little for a barbecue isn't he? for that baby there? ridiculous" and then gave me a really sneery look and said "none of my business" and as he walked off I'm sure I heard him say "poor thing" to his colleague! I was really hurt and left without buying anything. My OH said maybe he meant because of the smoke in the air? or is barbecued food bad because of the smoke? or was it just a comment on BLW? Maybe if assumed an 8 month old would be on puree? I'm paranoid now!!

If he was on about the smoke i'm sure you choose to sit your baby away from the wind direction of the smoke anyway! Usually most people prefer not to have the grill right beside where everyone's sat anyway, and if he was referring to the meat, i'm sure you'd ensure your LO's food was cooked properly throughout. To hear you're having a barbeque my reaction is "ooh how lovely!" ..not any of those other things!

Edited to say this butcher must not get it about BLW in general. Enjoy the sunny weather

He prob has no idea how old your lo is and assumed he shouldn't be eating food yet!! None of his business is spot on, you enjoy your BBQ :) x

We had a BBQ a few weeks ago & DS was part of it! We're not BLW so he just had his usual tea but was in the garden & pool along with other babies we'd invited. No one didn't come because of BBQ smoke or anything like that

I've never heard such a pass remarkable comment....I can only assume it had to do with BLW? I'm only guessing but gosh, what a thing to say.

Is there another butcher you can go to who won't be so quick to judge?? People just love to comment don't they? Am I the only gobshite who holds their tongue??? :baby:

Enjoy your BBQ and I hope Micah enjoys his first one

Whaaat are you sure he wasn't joking? I don't see how anyone could say that with any sincerity, what is wrong with a barbecue? We took Joel to his first barbecue when he was about 8 months old and funnily enough it was run by an ex-NCT group leader :haha: it was fine. Or maybe he associates BBQs with getting drunk. Still, really rude !

I'd take that as being about the food. My LO is BLW and we love eating out. I have received lota of weird and critical comments for it (in Scotland) mainly from the older generation.
He's too little, he'll choke on that, poor thing can't manage that you need to mash it up and etc.
The 'poor thing' is the worst one!

Absolutely nothing wrong with a BBQ. Social atmosphere in the fresh air. So long as the smoke isn't directly in his face you're good to go!

Joy x

Definitely not joking, his face was so sneery and disapproving! Ah well, it was my first fully disapproving sneer as a mum and I hear they're hardly uncommon so I guess I was bound to join the club sometime! :haha:

I'd definitely take him, he'll have a lot of fun! Just keep him away from the smoke and be extra careful if he's mobile (burns etc.). For food, are you getting any of these quick cook steaks (beef or turkey)? You could do him one without any seasoning. Or a piece of chicken. Also, when we have a barbecue, we always grill vegetables like courgettes, aubergines, peppers, and fruit, so just doing one piece of each without salt shouldn't be a problem. There's usually always plenty of bread and cheese and salads, so depending on what he can eat he shouldn't feel left out. Adults can always add salt and other seasoning later on, I'd just grill one lot without any seasoning first for Micah and then let it cool while doing the next lot.

I think the butcher was rude, but he probably knows nothing about BLW or thinks it's one of those new-fangled notions. Good on you for walking out, I'd take my custom elsewhere.

Have a lovely time, I'm sure Micah will enjoy the barbecue!

God yes, Niamh has been to loads. At your LO's age i would cook her food seperatly in the oven just to make sure it was cooked propperly all the way through and was not too hard on the outside. We all know how sausages on the BBQ can turn out.

Yep my sons been to two and he loved them. We gave him his usual dinner but he enjoyed sitting outside and we just kept him out the way of the smoke.

I would say as long as the meat is cooked well and obviously not too big of pieces your LO should be fine.
I know steak is kinda tough(but then I like mine super well done :haha: ) So prehaps the guy thought it'd be too tough of a meat for him.
I agree though hearing poor thing is really annoying!

We took DD to a BBQ yesterday and she's been to one before now as well! I just kept her out of the way of the smoke and I gave her some yummy chicken I'd marinaded with lemon, ginger and chilli and some baked sweet potato. She had a blast!

Yeah why not as long as his food is well cooked. Sounds fun! T will be having a BBQ party on his birthday there will be babies there too.

We BBQ all the time here :) I make her some chicken and she has a little bit of pasta salad...

Don't worry my DR told me LO can't have any grown up food until she has all her teeth WTF i didnt tell him we do BLW it's kinda unheard of where i live in canada i think.

he probably has never heard of blw so I think it was probably that hun. enjoy your bbq we finally have some sun for it x

Have people forgotten that every single meal before the time of the modern kitchen/grocery store was a.... "BBQ"????

Srs. Open flame + meat + probably crumbled/chewed up by mother = millions of years of human history.

I don't see any reason why you can't take a baby to a BBQ, I also don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to give a blw baby food cooked on a BBQ either. Ignore him!

WTF what a rude man. I'd have been absolutely fuming. Certainly wouldn't have got any more buisness from me. There's nothing wrong with BBQ food as long as it's cooked through, it's the same as sticking it under a grill FFS. He's probably one of those that think babies should be kept indoors until they're at school.

Robyn and I had a barbecue today! We sat at the other end of the garden away from the heat/smoke while it was cooking. Robyn had a sausage which I cut in half lengthways to check it was all done (she finds it easier to eat that way as she eats the middle and leaves the skin), she also had some of the salads, bread etc which were the side dishes.
