Would you trust the h1n1 shot after this...

blutea - I totally respect your choices and really understand why you made them... I just worry that someone who chooses not to vaccinate, will get sick and get my child sick before they are old enough for the vaccine (whooping cough in particular has made the news recently). I worry that someone else's choices will affect my family, you know?

I plan on spacing out the vaccines and not giving them until the child is a bit older because of the bad reactions, but with others not vaccinating, I feel its a riskier choice for my child to go longer without the vaccine.

I don't think anyone should have vaccines forced on them... but it scares me that a personal choice made by one person can have devastating effects on someone else. There's just no good answer to it.
I should add that my little sister died when she was 14 months old... from a disease that is rare and that there is no vaccine for. I've seen at least one person with a permanent injury from a vaccine, and as horrible at is was, its NOTHING compared to what losing a child does to a parent... my mom has never been the same and our family has had this wound that never quite heals.... I can't imagine losing a child and if I lost them because of a disease that was preventable? I'd lose it... :( Just my experience though.

Kandy - thanks, lol, that actually sounds like a REALLY good plan. I don't want unnecessary vaccines but waiting until they are teens sounds perfect!

LOL It's not everyday someone thinks I have a good idea!

Anyways, after a quick google I found this article

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa064040#articleResults

It's based on kids that only received one injection (in canada as far as I know two are standard though I'm not 100% on that...) and it demonstrated that after 8 years that the immunity was decreasing in several of the children. I can just imagine how many of them will still have their immunity when they're 35 and pregnant......

I'll keep my eyes open for a study that looks at long term immunity status in children who received two doses.

I also wanted to add that whooping cough (pertussis) is friggin SCARY! My son developed it when he was 2 1/2 even though he was immunized against it and it was one of the scariest experiences of my life! He was perfectly healthy when I tucked him into bed and less then two hours later he started coughing... it wasn't even a cough it was more like gasps for air and he was extremely tachypnic. He ended up requiring to stay at the hospital for quite some time....

The problem with the Whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine is that the virus has mutated and the vaccine does not offer protection against this new strain. I understand your fear about your child catching a childhood disease but did you know that a vaccinated child is just as likely to spread illness? There are natural ways to manage and prevent illness besides vaccines. Once I learned about each disease and how it affects the human body I became less afraid and more composed about my choice. I think that happens to a lot of individuals how educate themselves about this issue.

Lisaf-That was very horrible what happened to your younger sis.:hugs:She is looking at you from Heaven and is so proud that you are helping others.

BlueTea- I can't belive for 6 months your arm was like that. How do you use normal remedies to substitute vaccines?

Thank you BlueTea for posting up a source..Its well appreciated..The more info he better:)

While I'm not a big fan of immunizations...... I can't at all bring myself to believe in homeopathy....

Although I do admit homeopathy can be very beneficial to women in labour (as well as for those with illnesses which involve a strong pyschological component) providing they either believe in the stuff or haven't a clue what it is...

The mind is a powerful thing.

That poor woman!! I can't believe what's happened to her! :(

Every parent wants their child to be safe and even when pregnant getting a vaccine.. I use some vaccines but some I am still looking up info on..Vaccines are not for everyone.. Some people they help also too though..

The mind is a VERY powerful thing. The immune system is also a very powerful thing. On it's own and/or with natural alternatives it has the power to heal from within.

Those with compromised immune systems might benefit from vaccines but the jury is still out of this theory. On the other hand, vaccines have been shown to cause immune deficiencies and neurological damage in some individuals.

Well I definitly do agree with that!

Our minds are always readily available and I am a strong believer in visualization therapy... And, there are so many natural things we can do to promote good health and prevent disease... Diet is one of the first things that come to mind. What we put in our mouths has a huge effect on our overall well being. And this is especially true with babies and toddlers. Breastfeeding is absolutely essential in ensuring that our children have optimal immune health. And there are very few things in life that breastmilk does not treat.... It's even been shown to decrease the size of and in some cases eliminate cancerous tumours let alone the fact that it's one of the best treatments for ear infections, eye infections, cuts, canker sores, etc etc etc.

I agree:hugs:

Breastfeeding does a big contribute to the immune system too. also i did the vitamin d drops for bean too while i breastfed i ate prenatals with dha..also switched her to a multivitamin at 1 while i breastfed.sorry tryna eat n type:haha:

Hey Blutea - so I checked out the link you sent me. I guess I'm turned off when it seems like a sales pitch or based so much on anecdotal evidence. I googled the Dr who wrote it and he's a famous veterinarian? He has a PhD but is not an MD. I find it hard to take advice from someone who doesn't specialize in human medicine. However, I understand that someone who was educated within the 'system' will probably drink the koolaide when it comes to vaccines.

I was open to learning about the anti-vaccine movement but it is full of so much half-truth, or unfounded or disproven theories that its hard for me to trust almost anything I read from that side of the arguement. I do believe in scrutinizing the vaccines I get or am offered for my children.

My understanding is that whooping cough is mutating because its had a recurrance in the first place which is because people stopped vaccinating? Thats how I understood it...

I think this is an important discussion for us to have, and disagreeing is good for everyone because it causes discussion.

I worry about breastfeeding because I won't be able to unless I stop the medication I need to function :(
I hear all the benefits, but know its not really a choice for me :( I also know I was breastfed and am very healthy, but my sister was breastfed, and my brother was breastfed and has always been sickly as a child and now has a debilitating disease as an adult.
My mom once mentioned they were developing a vaccine for pregnant woman to prevent their children from getting the disease my sister died from, I haven't told my mom I'm pregnant yet and don't know if this vaccine is available or proven safe, but I know I'll want it if it will prevent me from losing a child like my mom did.

I brought up my sister because I am so afraid of losing my child to disease. I saw it first-hand and what it did to the family and just have a very strong fear of it. It scares me more than the side effects from vaccines.

I wanted to point out the fact that it can be quite difficult to find good anti-vaccine studies because frankly getting funding to perform such studies is very very very difficult... Medicine and pharmaceutical companies tend to like to support their own kind.... It's always good to look at things critically, especially when the information is very one sided... and in this day and age the information is definitly geared towards herd immunizations.

I also agree that this is a good discussion to have... although a heated one. And I think we're doing a good job at avoiding personal attacks so

And Lisa, do you mind if I ask what the disease was that you're sister had? As well as what medication you're taking? There is actually very few medications that are truly contraindicated in breastfeeding and in most cases the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risks of the medications...

Here's a link to Dr.Jack Newman's website:

www.drjacknewman.com

And here's the link specifically regarding meds while breastfeeding:

https://www.drjacknewman.com/help/Breastfeeding and Medications.asp

Jack newman is a well known lactation consultation as well as a pediatrician (he's a real human doctor). I've never met ANYONE who knows more about breastfeeding then he does... He's just super! Anyways, if you e-mail him about your concerns regarding the specific medication you're on he's sure to get back to you with some advice. He's usually very quick to respond to e-mails.

I just found this blurb from Jack Newman's website....

Sums up what we were talking about re: breastmilk and baby immune health

"Breastfeeding protects babies against infectious illnesses. Breastmilk provides many immune factors to the baby. Although everyone talks about antibodies, antibodies are only one group of immune factors, of which there are dozens in breastmilk. These immune factors interact in many ways to protect the baby. One important way is that breastfeeding provides the baby with “mucosal immunity”. That is, breastmilk provides antibodies, mucins, lactoferrin, lysozyme, oligosaccharides and many other immune factors that line the gut and upper respiratory surface and prevent microbes (viruses, bacteria, fungi etc) from entering the baby’s body and making him sick1 2. In other words, breastfeeding, in effect, is isolation of the baby without isolating the baby."

I agree with you completely about the lack of information and the lack of funding for anti-immunization studies. I just find it so hard to act on most of the anti-vaccine stuff out there because it isn't well researched either.
And yes, I'm very happy this hasn't turned personal as these heated discussions so often do! :)

As far as the disease my sister died of... they told me when I was 6 (when she died) and we haven't discussed it much since... my dad doesn't remember much and tells me to ask my mom, but my mom is still so sensitive I can't even bring it up with her.. though once I tell her I'm pregnant I'm going to ask again and get all the information she has.
Its not supposed to be hereditary but my brother had it and lived (he was 2 at the time). From what I've been told over the years, it looks like a cold at first, but seems to be more like meningitis ... but if you treat it like meningitis, you can actually make it worse...? My brother was hospitalized with it and was getting worse until they took him off all the IVs etc... Thats how it was told to me anyway. My sister died on the way to the hospital so she wouldn't have survived as there wasn't anything they can do for the disease? It was something pneumococcal... again, this is my memory from when I was 6 and what I think they told me.

The medication I'm on is provigil (modafinil) which is the only drug of its kind (its a stimulant of some sort but they dont' quite know how it works). It has almost no side effects for me, but keeps me from falling asleep at inappropriate times and even stops me from napping when I want to...
They know almost nothing about it in pregnancy and they do know it passes through the breast milk.... I found one woman online who took it and breastfed and her baby was fine and had no sleep issues... but I'm worried about it.
I can't thank you enough for the links though, I will definitely contact that doctor and hope he knows more about this drug than anyone else seems to!! It hasn't been out for that long and isn't used a lot it seems... though that might be changing as people are using it for off-label purposes.
Without it, I act like I'm on some kind of drug that makes you drowsy... fall asleep if you let me sit still for a minute, out of it, make mistakes etc, fall asleep behind the wheel of my car etc.... obviously not a safe condition to be caring for a newborn in, and being sleep deprived actually makes it worse.. I even get cataplexy if I'm under too much stress.

Well I'd love an update to see what Dr. Newman says. He has quite a strong interest in medication use while breastfeeding so I hope he can be of help to you.
