Just curious - do you listen to your music when your toddler can hear or not? If so, why or why not?

I was just listening to Adele's 21 and it reminded my that my friend's 2.5 yo DD can actually sing much of the lyrics to Rolling in the Deep, Rumor Has It, etc. Clearly she listens to it a lot. I've never really listened to my music around my kids -- on purpose I think. Adele's album is fairly benign, I guess. But then I switched over to Rufus Wainwright and his Want Two album -- The One I Love, The Art Teacher, and Gay Messiah are definitely not songs I'd want my toddler knowing the lyrics to! :haha:

So, what is your policy? Do you think it matters?

For me it depends on my mood, some days I just don't want to listen to Old Macdonald had a Farm. Mostly I put toddler music on but once in awhile I will put on an 80s station or even music from the 90s. When in the car, if a toddler CD isn't in then I will put it on the comedy station, I just have to be careful to switch it right quick if the bit is too saucy. I never really thought that they were listening when I had that station on until one day Tiarnan asked me what a jackass was. I just told him it was a mule and switched the station. :haha:

Well, Kelana listens to alot of her siblings music...Barbie sing-a-longs, Mini Pops, then there was alot of Christmas music. Kelana's favorite is the Wiggles. She can sing alot of them, which means she makes a singing sound and dances...some actions. lol She doesnt' talk a whole lot yet. As far as my music...I don't really listen to anything innapropriate, but if we are in the car with the kids, it's usually their music, not ours.

I must admit that i will happily bung on the radio when in the kitchen feeding Lillian in the highchair if, my hubby isnt around.

But my hubby doesnt like it. He thinks Lillian only ever eats properly if listening to Vivaldi:dohh: So he will only play classical music whilst together with Lillian.

We used to listen to all sorts of music when in the car, but not now. OH is against it and only plays nursery rhymes. However, he will happily give her his phone which has a download of In the Night Garden, which I dont agree with!

We listen to a right old mixture...largely because dh and I listen to a right old mixture. Lizzie is still asleep, but we've got Ashkenazy on Mozart piano concertos on now, and that will be on for breakfast. We also have lots of 'children's' music...annnnd, Lizzie loves a good bit of MTV and pop to dance to. One Direction are current favourites :haha: However, she refuses to listen to *any* of my music, other than classical...so no RHCP, no KoL, no Mumford...you get the picture :D

I don't have a problem with her listening to anything, within reason. Some music videos are off limits, and I am now a bit wary of lyrics. I do make a point of her listening to classical for a good while, classic fm or radio three on everyday at some point, and she has developed a good waltz for Strauss , buuuut I am also happy for her to have a boogie to pop music. She was throwing some serious shapes to Jason Derulo, too. Just have to get her appreciating some different artists!

Owen loves nothing more than having a dance around to whatevers in the charts, his fave at the moment is LMFAO im sexy and I know it!:haha:

They tend to bleep the swearwords out and any innuendos, kids dont understand anyway.I dont have any problems with it,Owen has a very eclectic taste for a toddler:haha:

My other half music taste is dance hall and hip hop and rnb, shop my kids being brought up with It lol taylor loves lmfao and moves like jager atm lol dexter just gets his grove on with anything lol

I listen to Arabic songs in the car. Now Omar asks for the song he wants to listen to & he sings with the lyrics of almost all songs. He knows the song from it's starting music.

I'm highly sensitive when it comes to music & I get headaches if there is music in the background. This is why I don't put on music at home unless Omar asks for it. Most of the time he asks for Arabic classics or nursery rhymes, but if he wants to dance I put on some Arabic pop for his to dance.

Iv got radio one on right now, i allways have my music on when Niamh is around, she loves Jimmy eat world and paramore. Once shes old enough to request music then il put her choice on but untill then im trying to instill a decent sense of music in her. lola\

zane listens to my music all the time. he loves music
altho there are certain songs i wont play around him because they have swearing in.

We often have the music channels on in the house because I always need the telly on and Summer dances away quite happily. In particular she loves Lady Gaga and Rihanna. Current fave is Bruno Mars the Lazy Song. She loves the monkeys in the video.

So yeah, lots of music in this house, mainly chart songs. I don't worry AT ALL about what she may or may not pick up because at the end of the day I'm the one who teaches her about life, and seeing Lady Gaga dancing about doing nutty stuff won't replace that.

ETA - One song I do draw the line at is LMFAOs (?) Sexy and I know it. The video where they spend most of the song thrusting their crotches and zooming in is revolting imo. I think I'm thinking of the right song!

^Owen likes that monkey one too,but they also thrust their crotches out in that dont they?

I try not to, because B is a little sponge and after a few times he will sing it back. Some of the music I listen to isn't quite appropriate, not like swearing, sexual etc but like ed sheeran and that song about drugs, I don't want him singing that!

I'm quite careful because Daisy is amazing at picking up song lyrics. She sings all the time and learns words unbelievably quickly. I listen to punk music so some of it is not suitable so I do censor what I listen to when she's about.

I keep BBC6 Music on most days if we're at home and Charlie doesn't seem to mind one way or the other - mostly because he's used to it now I guess. I don't put music channels with video on because some of the videos are just  even for me (old codger). He particularly likes the Yeah Yeah Yeahs Zero and can sing along :haha: I want him to have a knowledge of loads of different music, but some days it can be toddler songs all day and thats fine too :)

Jack does the dance from sexy and I know it... am I a naughty mummy?

When I was a little one, my mum played a song by sinead o'connor, it was my favourite song because when it goes lalalalala I used to run around singing it too, I knew the words but it was only a few years ago that I realised what they meant:

I'm not no red football
To be kicked around the garden
No no I'm a red christmas-tree ball
And I'm fragile
I'm not no animal
Though I am to you
I'm not no crocodile
Like the one in Dublin Zoo
Who lived in a cage
the length and breadth of his body
With a window which people would look through
And throw coins on his back to taunt him
'though he couldn't move
Even if he wanted to
I'm not no animal in the zoo
I'm not no whipping boy for you
You may not treat me like you do
I'm not no animal in the zoo
My skin is not a football for you
My head is not a football for you
My body's not a football for you
My womb is not a football for you
My heart is not a football for you
I'm not no animal in the zoo
This animal will jump up and eat you
I'm not no animal in the zoo
And I've every intention
Of leaping up and getting you

I still love the song, and play it for my kids. It did me no harm, I didn't even know what I was singing/what it represented xx

Luke LOVES our music. He's my little metal head! He loves Ozzy and Dio. He gets his little grove on to areosmith and Bon jovi. He loves loves loves it!

Ozzy is is ultimate fave though. He likes to listen to some of the slower songs (goodbye to romance, mama I'm homing home, dreamer ect) when he's falling asleep and I encourage it.

He also likes LMFAO, and thinks it hillarious to start crazy dancing if you tell him 'wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle, yeah!'
