£190 pregnancy grant?

Hi,just read in my huggies email that pregnant women can claim this between 25 weeks and birth. Can anyone claim this or are there certain criteria? X

I heard it finished in January too.

But Ive just a got the form for a Maternity care grant? (think its called that) which I dont have to pay back.

the only things ive heard are for people who are on benifits which annoys me lol people who work hard cant qualify for anything. but people who chill at home can get these 500pound grants and help with furniture before baby arives..

There is still the Sure Start Maternity Grant which is £500. You have to be on benefits to claim it. All other "grants" have now been stopped, including the £190 pregnancy grant.

oh and the sure start grant you can only get it if your under 25 and hardly work or on benifits. or over 25 and work over 30 hours.. so im to young to qualify but work 37 hours .. unfair lol

I believe it is fair, but should be changed slightly. I was working full time, however now I'm on Disability benefits and signed off work due to not being able to walk. I've gone from being on £1000 a month to way less than half, and its incredibly difficult. I need this money in order to get the last bits for baby, luckily we have all the big things so it will be going purely on toiletries and nappies and wipes.

I don't agree that people who work aren't eligible for a penny, however in my situation because I'm out of work through a disability I believe its fair in my circumstance.

Apart from that, I think that far too many "jobseekers" claiming they're looking for work get it, then spend it on holidays or whatever, that is wrong in my eyes.

Im also unable to work through disability. I cant get the maternity grant because I have a 11yr old son. You can only claim for your 1st child

Thats one of the things I think they should change. For people who cannot work due to disability I believe they should be eligible for it no matter if its the 1st child or not, although is there not some other form of payment you could get? Or increased ESA?
But by all means stop it for the people who are capable of work or been out of work for years and already have a child, thats just playing the system I think.

Nope, there is nothing I can claim. Theres no increase in ESA either unfortunately. I didnt even claim the grant for my 1st child either as I was working full time.

Think it is fair TBH, people on benefits mostly do need it a lot more. Unfortunately there are those who take the p*ss, criteria should be tightened up.

This country is in so much debt that sadly cuts are needed, and I would rather suffer them than leave my children with a country in lots of debt. The £190 grant was an obvious one to go, as was child benefit to higher income earners. We will lose both and as much as the £80 odd a month will be missed it is needed. It is just very unfair the way they have based the criteria on sole income & not overall household income... Grrrr!

i think they have stopped the child trust fund scheme as well now havent they?
