Backdating child benefit and child tax ??

Hia all,
Ive recently had my little boy and sent off my forms for child benefit and child tax credit.
Ive been told they should both backdate the money from my babys birth date, will they auto do this or do i have to ask for them to back date the money? Ive been told child benefit will backdate it fine but child tax sometimes dont and you have to ring them up otherwise they wont backdate ,anyone recently made claims and got money backdated?
