Wow, all the cakes here are fab but as a cupcaker I have to say... Skc - yours blow me away, those floral arrangements are divine. What nozzles are you using? I assume 103 Wilton for the roses and some leaf tips but the other petals, geez. Amazing.

Midori, your meerkat one is brilliant. A love it.

So, here are some of mine. I do run mine as a business so just a small selection...

Where do you ladies buy your Sugarpaste/fondant from? I would love to bake and decorate a cake to the same high standards as you ladies!!!

I have a lady near by me with stall in a market and I usually most stuff from her. However if she has something I don't have I use here:

https://www.cakescookiesandcraftsshop.co.uk/

I generally buy my fondant from supermarket although I don't like tescos. For sugarpaste it depends if I'm ordering a few things I will use a cake supply shop but if just need the sugar paste I buy from amazon they are a good price usually free delivery. I usually buy the sugarflair colour paste from amazon too.

After having the intention to bake for a while, and not having done anything since Christmas, I actually got around to doing some baking this evening (I finally have time at the moment, I have had my main module exam at uni).

They were only choc-chip sponge cupcakes, but I made some pretty roses from sugar paste to go on the top and got to use my new colourings, which I bought months ago. They produced a lovely colour.

 Thankyou! I think it was you (without sounding stalkerish haha) that put up a guide to different nozzles that got me inspired to start. Umm, I use a mix of all the petal tips but I never look which one I grab but I think it was a 104 for the pansies and other flowers, and 81 I think it is for the carnation type flower, though I don't really like it cos it breaks off and leaves the edges looking ragged, I still haven't mastered it. What tip have you used in your carnation flower? Your cupcakes are gorgeous!!

Hi all. Just been looking through, these cakes are all amazing. I love baking and decorating but havnt had much time recently. Wondering if one of you talented ladies can help me. Los birthday is coming up, I wantef to do him a lightning mcqueen cake. Has anyone made one that they wouldnt mind sharing? My skills are limited, how simple do you think it would be? I plan on making a test run before the day.

Hope someone can help.

Snap DCS, i've been stalking this thread as I would like to make my son's second birthday cake and want to do a little charley bear one. I've been getting some ideas from google images, but if anybody can help I would like some suggestions on how I can make paw prints from fondant icing

Hi DCS - not sure I'd be brave enough for lightening mcqueen - but I did do a Thomas The Tank Engine! (Im sure the picture is on here).

Personally - here is how I would attempt it:

Bake 3 traycakes ( 20cm x 30cm tin - or something of oblong shape about 5cm deep)
There will be some wastage, but better to have more than to sculpt than work with less.

Level all off so they look the same.

Sandwich two trays together with simple buttercream, then carve the bonet off front end by gently shaving away the cake into a shape you are happy with.

Using cake number 3, make the windscreen 'hub' and sandwich onto the top of the two trays, it should now sort of look like a car?? :)

I would then very lightly ice all the cake and cover with rolled out Red Fondant.

For the wheels, use store bought swiss roll and cut into slices, cover with black fondant and white wheel spoke decoration (icing or fondant).

Then decorate as lightening mcqueen with different coloured fondant icings.

I hope this makes sense!!! :)

Hi Bluebird.....paw prints would be super easy in fondant.
One large circle cutter and a smaller cutter (not necessary food cutters if you dont already have them, household items also work great as cutters....upturned glass, lids etc (all well washed of course!))

Cut out 1 large circle, and 3 smaller circles then arrange into a paw :)

Look out for 'Teddy Bear Brown' it is a fondant colour and great for bears. Also, if you want the furry teddy look, instead of using fondant, try buttercream (I would usually suggest coffee flavoured as this would be a perfect colour but unsure for a kiddie?....perhaps just us a brown colouring) then paste it over your cake and finish by roughing it up into peaks all over to create texture.

I hope this helps!! :)

Ooh a cake thread! There's some amazing cakes on here, you're all so talented :D I only discovered baking in Oct, and only really do cupcakes. Here's a few of mine.

Thanks sue_88. Im not feeling too brave, but thought if I made a test run, at least if its crap no one will see it. If all else fails ill get one from asda. Im doing a mr tumble themed one aswell but that should be simple enough.

Is there a recipie for cake that is easier to work witg, something abit firmer iygwim?

I have used this recipe before, and it is a good sponge that doesn't crumble too easily. It is easy enough to scale up and down - I made a 6 inch round cake, and scaled the recipe down to do so.

I've just made a bear cake, I can give you info on how I made it if you like? it's actually quite easy.

To carve you need a Madeira or high density sponge.

The light isn't very good, so it looks quite yellow, but its chocolate cake covered with white chocolate ganache.

This is my first EVER iced cake attempt so it's got a few flaws but I'm quite proud of myself since i'm an absolute novice and had no pro cake tools haha.
