What size of cake are you hoping to cover? An 8" round cake that is 3" deep uses about 600-750g sugarpaste, if that helps?

There is usually an indication on the packet to tell you how much you need. I used 2 x 250g packs to cover a 6 inch round cake that was approx 2.5 inches deep. There was plenty left over, but it's best to have too much than not enough.

Hi everyone  I only just realised this thread existed :) I love baking, it's one of my favourite things to do. I've done loads of cakes and cupcakes, here's my most recent one though for Coralie's birthday last week.

Hi! Me again. So decided im not brave enough to make a lightning mcqueen cake decided to go for a luigis casa della tires cake instead. Which I think I can do.
Where do u ladies buy yout icing? I need a fair bit. For 3 birthday cakes.
Also I was thinking of having a tray of tires. Basically mini donuts. Covered in black icing. Now is it possible to melt the icing somehow so I can pour it over the donuts or maybe dip them in?

I'd buy candymelts for the tyres, much easier. You could put the mini doughnuts on sticks too so they're like cake pops, mini tyre cake pops! Love it :haha:

For icing, I normally buy regalice as imo it's the best one but for so many cakes that could work out quite pricey  You could get tesco own? I used that for Coralie's birthday cake and it worked just fine :)

I second candy melts! I used them for my F1 cake but poured them direct into mini savarin moulds - you could easily dip donuts in them too. Melted chocolate with a touch of black colouring would prob work too. I also use shop brand icing if I want it white, I save the regalice for coloured cakes. I buy regalice and candy melts at hobbycraft.

yep another recommendation here for Candymelts

:) I get my icing online or from my local market but have used supermarket before when I have ran out (Im usually carrying lots of stock though!) - works just as well.

Thank u. Love the tyre cake pops. Will deffinately do them.
Candy melts, are they easy to work with? Cant order them till payday but his birthdays 5th march so my first attempt will be my only chance.

Im doing 2 mr tumbles spotty bag cakes, so should be simple enough but the cars one is the one thats going to be the bigest, and need more icing. Iv never tried tescos stuff before so will pick some up wih my food shop.
Thnk u ladies. All going well I shall post pics on here of the test.run for oppinions if you.dont mind.

Please excuse the typos and random . My phone has a mindof its own.

I found this great for cake pops:

Never done cake pops before so can't help there. Candy melts are really easy to work with, especially if you've got a microwave. They can be remelted and all sorts! They do taste very sweet though, although I quite like them.

midori1999, that cake is lovely. i'm playing it fairly safe this year and plan to do a victoria sponge and ice it and stick a little charley bear figurine on top :haha: Any idea how much fondant icing i would need to ice a 7inch victoria sponge and 10inch cake board?

Hi Louppwy, glad you found the thread!

Thank you.

If you put the cake on the board and then I've the cake and the board at once, if that makes sense, then you could probably get away with 1KG. If you do the board first, then ice the cake and put in on the iced board, you'll use more, up to 1.5KG I'd say.

This is a christening cake I made for a friend at the weekend, although its not quite finished here as I added the final flowers at the venue. I didn't get any pics of it finished.

Thanks Midori, that helps massively. Love the christening cake by the way. This is similar to what I was thinking for lo's birthday cake but not brave enough to make the bear out of icing just yet :haha:

Hi Ladies, your cakes are all stunning, some amazing work.

I bake for fun really, but don't often have the time. Maci is one on wednesday and I'm hoping to bake a cake for Saturday for when we have family over. I'm thinking garden themed, so 'grass' base then thinking lady birds, bumble bees, caterpillars etc, which I plan to make myself but have a couple of questions :

I'm currently ordering some sugarflair colourings to play about with. The pots are 25g, will this be sufficient to make my bugs etc with? And colour my base green?

What is the best icing to use for my bugs? Was thinking I'd buy white fondant then seperate it and colour what I needed for what?
