They're amazing laura! Are there cheaper alternatives to cigarellos?

Sorry only just see this. I've used Cadbury's Fingers and cafe curls before (like the ones you put in ice cream) they are both a lot cheaper but nothing gives the effect that cigarellos do although they still tasted delicious :)

Made these today for a competition :)

Yummy, Emmy. What flavour are they and what sort of competition is it? Good luck for it.

Love the Mini mouse cupcakes Laura x
Good luck with the comp Emmy, they cuppies look lush x

Class was fab, I have so much fun & its nice to spend time with my mum (she comes too)
The only problem this time was that it was so warm in the room that the buttercream started to go really soft & runny so when we piped it just wasnt doing much of an effect but the end product still looked good I think x

sorry about the rubbish pics was took on my ipod x
Oh & first time making a Fodent Rose

Thanks Ladies :) My girls were very impressed. :)

I work in ounces so I use 8oz butter and 16oz icing sugar which if I am right works out to be 250g of butter and 500g icing sugar. Lol.

How did the class go Reedy?

I did some Minnie Mouse ones for a friends daughter.

They are great!

REALLY daft question but how have you iced the 'flat' iced ones (so the ones without the buttercream piped ontop??) <---- total novice lol

Reedy they're fab!!

The cupcakes are just vanilla flavour, although I'm wishing I'd made the buttercream strawberry flavoured rather than vanilla as it's the exact shade of strawberry milkshake mmmmm lol.
It's for a dr oetker comp, I had to film a decorating video (cringe....) but it's far too long so Monday I'm going to try to edit it down if not then I'll re film it, it's due in 14th Feb eek....

Emmy, the cupcakes are fab! Good luck with the competition, you're very brave doing a video!

Reedy, glad you enjoyed the cupcake class, nice to share an interest with your Mum. My sister bakes too and it's nice to chat about it. The cupcakes look great!

I'm shattered! I had three cakes to do for today. I won't be doing that again! Was up until 4am, then back up at 7am with the kids and have just sat down now to get the baby to sleep. Only stopped to feed the baby all day, what an idiot!

Cakes were:

Tangled cake and 'matching' cupcakes. I hand painted the dress but you can't really see.

With a pallet knife. It's one of the best things in my kitchen lol. Just put a dollop of icing on top and spread it from the middle outwards.

It's from a local shop with products that are made here. It's so pretty isn't it? Was a Christmas present :)

Yup! Lovely!!! :)

I love it when I find some gorgeous cupcake bits.. I'd love to turn my bedroom into a cupcake palace :haha:

Anyone making Valentines day ones?
I was going to but going to see a friend this afternoon so havent got time x Maybe next year x

Nope! None this year, that is not cos I am single though :haha: I have a valentines order for next Monday as the lady is away until then.

Fab cakes as always ladies! Laura I love the girl's cake! So adorable.

Midori - I usually charge about £25 for a basic 8'' cake, up to £35/£40 for a bigger or really detailed ones/loads of characters etc. No one round here would pay more than that - but I guess it all depends on your clientele!

My usual cake would be about 40-50 depending how much effort detail. Although I have been told that's very cheap.

Work out how much it costs you to make it from everything to sugar paste, eggs, gun trag, glue, board, box etc then either charge an hourly rate or a flat rate to be made :)

Xx

Sorry, keep meaning to reply to these but only just had time to get on my netbook (as opposed to phone) to quote properly.

Thanks for replying. I had a look online in my local area and cakes such as the bear cake seem to sell for £65-£95, depending on whether it's a run from home business or one with premises. I'm shocked tbh, I would never pay that for it... :haha:

I'm a bit concerned as someone has suggested that even if I am just asking people to cover the costs of ingredients then I need to be registered with the local council. I rang them this morning but you have to speak to a general switch board person, who takes your details and question/s then emails the right department with your enquiry and then ring you. Talk about round the houses!!!

So I might need to register anyway, even though it's just a hobby. I don't want to stop making them for people as I love doing it and really need the practice, but I can't afford not to charge for the ingredients really when I am making so many cakes, I'll have done 13 by the end of the month.

I didn't make any valentines things either, but my sister did these:

And I made this for a birthday yesterday. My first giant cupcake and I was only asked Sunday afternoon, so it was a bit of a rush really. I'm fairly pleased with it, it's all chocolate except the stars/hearts/lettering. I've never done an 'exploding' cake before either, it was a pain!

Beautiful Midori!!

These are the boxes I am using for Mothers Day. :) Love them. Got the idea from Glitterfairy as she had the same boxes lol
