child benifits UK girls....not good news

It is terrible that working doesn't pay.

Pleasebaby I apologise I thought your comment was sarcastic. Just goes to show that wires can get crossed :) x

I wasn't trying to be nasty but I see younger girls fall pregnant and say they can get this and that I work with teen mums the newsy on we have is only 12 and going round say to her friend she only got pregnant coz she gets things handed on a plate from the goverment if u use protection condom splits u can get morning after pill the easiest solution is not to have sex your all moaning that it's not fair and not right that there stopping all these benefits what was the point in health in pregnancy if you can claim healthy start vouchers for milk and veg it was either the hip or hsv had to go so they choose hip why give ssmg to someone who has more than one child for example someone with 5 kids=5*500 pound=2500. I can see there point in just giving it to u for just 1child what did theydo b4 grants like this was invented if they didn't need it then y now

I think quite a lot of people are being stereotypical on this thread with such comments along the lines of 'people have babies to get benefits' and 'people don't work so expect them' well that's total and utter BS! I wish people would stop tarring everyone with the same brush, its the minority of people that do that who claim benefits not the majority!

I work part time, I'm a full time college student studying A levels, I'll be going to university in september to study Law hopefully. So if I'm entitled to benefits then yes I will take them because they'll help me a great deal. Especially the care to learn grant for childcare. I want to make the best life I can for my LO even though he was an unexpected surprise. Benefits will only be a temporary option for me just so I can get my education and land a decent well paid job. But if I wasn't entitled to these that wouldn't be possible, I'd be on benefits longer, see the cycle? Benefits are a great idea when used as a temporary option.

As a student everyone is always like "OMG you get soo much!" and i admit, yeah, if i applied for it i'd get it. I would get priority council housing, housing benefit / local housing allowance, childcare costs covered (up to 80%), child tax money, job seekers allowance during holidays and because i'm a student i'd be exempt from paying council tax. Not forgetting the various bursaries i could apply for.

Just because i can get all this, doesn't mean i should and will. I'm fortunate enough right now that my dad has let me move in back home (where i pay board) so i can save up for a deposit and a couple months rent on my own flat - not council owned. I will not be getting a council house with bills paid for, because i believe i don't need it when (with a couple of months of tough saving) i can get my own place. They house i could get should go to somebody who needs it more than me.

I won't be going for the job seekers allowance either because i plan to get a part time job the whole time i'm in uni even if it kills me i because a) i can work, there's nothing medically wrong with me and if i can work, i know i should and b) i want to feel responsible for my baby, i want to know i'm working hard for him so that when he's older and i'm hopefully in my own home with a good education degree behind me i can tell him all i've done for him with my hard work.

The one thing i will probably use is the aid with childcare so that i can attend my lessons and part time job, but i don't plan to abuse this either.

Benefits should be a last option or an option taken if you really need the help, not just because you can you know? I think that's why so many people think so badly of those on benefits because they assume they are 'lazy' and while yeah, some are and they are the ones making the system seem unfair there are those who generally need it.

It will be a shame if they did get rid of the £190 healthy start grant...

[[Unrelated]] just noticed we've gone pretty far off topic :p we should probably start a new thread discussion about this?

Many if the teen mums on here are either working or studying or their partners are working. It's not just young mums that milk the system either, people from all walks of life do x

Can I just ask if you claimed any benefits for your LO or will be doing for this one?

I find your comments to be quite offensive, I've never heard a teen mum say anything like that where I live. And I was on the pill when I got pregnant and I didn't find out I was until I was quite far along. So it's not as easy as saying 'take the morning after pill'

I completely agree!! My sister is 'agoraphobic' (has never been to the doctor and won't have the doctor at the house to check her, she's not anxious around people, just the outside world apparently), is in her mid 30s, lives with my mum and was claiming job seekers (oh yes, well enough to sign on). When my abuser was arrested she jumped at the chance to become my mother's carer (several strokes have left her paralysed down one side, heart murmur, blood clots etc. very proud woman). It means she won't be questioned on why she never finds a job, not even one working from home. It's disgusting, she does nothing apart from make tea, tidy up a bit (though my mother is disabled she is completely capable as she has adapted over the last 40 or so years) and smoke cigarettes.

My darling niece is now pregnant (lots of bad blood, I come across as a bitch here but there's lots of history - including them telling me they didn't care when I overdosed, I'm responsible for my mother's disability etc.) and is due before me. She will get everything, there is no thought there about getting a job or anything like that. She quit college as soon as she found out.

THOSE are the types of people who make me mad and I am very sad to say they are family.

Ive seen the word "entitled" in this thread sooooo many times, and thats the trouble with this country

Benefeits are exactley that ... a benefeit, there to help and assist people who are struggling, nothing more, nothing less, yet too many people claim them just because they are "entitled" too and that is what gets peoples backs up.

I completely agree with you Char.due.jan, i didn't find out until i was 30 weeks along, hardly the time to consider the morning after pill. I don't see why somebody who has more than one child shouldn't receive what we all do. Sometimes people like a big family! Yeah, there are those who do it for the money but not everyone with 5 kids is... if they need the help then they should be entitled to it like we all are.

And people need more help more as everything is more expensive now. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have the right qualifications / connections to get a well paying job and if somebody generally requires financial help then we should be lucky we live in a country where it's available to them.

Do you know what? I wish there was a benefit available to everyone for free chocolate :haha: we'd all be happy as larry then!!

Count me in! Now!

I'll be taking the SS grant this time because we do need help with the cost of a double buggy, but looking back I think we may have been able to apply for it withalex....I just assumed we couldn't. but we didnt need it to be honest, we more than got by

Right, I'm off to pen a letter to my local MP (whoever that is) demanding we get given free chocolate! Oh and we need extra at easter too!

It depends on how you buy I think. I've always been very frugal and am lucky to have friends who are giving me lots of things (the latest was a bouncer but we are also getting a moses basket and other bits). My SIL gave birth to a girl last August so if baby is a girl we'll get all her clothes.

I love charity shopping too. I never went that often but since I found out I'm pregnant it's like a lightbulb has gone off and I'm in there at every oppurtunity. We got some lovely grows, jackets (lots of disney ones) and pramsuits. I would estimate most of it came to under £20 and would be worth £100+

As mummies we all want to buy new for our children but if I did that I would be in some massive debt. Baby won't care where their clothes/toys came from so why should I as long as I clean them appropriately? Sterilisers etc. will be bought brand new.

That's true. You can't really justify spending 500 on a pram on your first when your're mean to be skint when there's cheaper adequate prams.

I agree... I actually wanted the silvercross 3D but dismissed it because of its price and settled on the i'coo vario for £260... luckily I got what I wanted in the end for a lot cheaper!! :D

Ahhh that frigging sucks. Instead of cutting it could they not give it to the mothers that really do need it ? Like do a income check or something ? =/

I was relying on that

Is it just wales or the whole of the uk ?

Totally agree with vinteenage.

I'm glad all these benefits are being cut.

well maby if you were in a situation where you had the smallest amount of money then you wouldnt have the same veiw.
From all your posts i read you seem to have a very snobish attitude. I will say right now that the £500 and the £190 or whetever it is really did help me, my family dont have much money and so it does help some familys that have no savings and little money coming in. Maby you could afford to buy everything but some people dont, i think you need to take that into consideration other peopes situations before posting.

I think they should have a cut off point for who should get it not completely take it away! Its totally unfair to people who genuinly wouldnt be able to afford to buy things without it.

And maybe before going in all guns blazing, maybe i have been in that situation before?

Before my fiance was lucky enough to become successful in his job, we relied TOTALLY on the benefit system. We were on jobseekers, housing benefits, every single benefit going, we had it. I know exactly what it's like to struggle, actually.

I'm sorry you find me 'snobbish' but i'm damn well proud of what we have worked for and if that makes me snobbish, i couldn't give a monkeys. I'm also damn well sick of all these benefits available. So yes, i am glad they have clamped down.

And for all these people saying 'we need the money' .. What do you think people did BEFORE benefits were around? They just had to get buy. There have been people living off hardly anything before benefits and they survived..

As i said before, we totally relied on the goverment before we found and worked hard at our jobs, so i know exactly where people are coming from. We had barely anything, we didn't eat for days, lived in the cold, it was awful. however, i do believe the government hand out money willy nilly, and too much of it. I did take the 190, but refused the 500. Babies are not expensive. They are only expensive if you make them so.

So, yes i do stand by my earlier post that i am glad the government is clamping down. We are in too much debt. It's up the parent to pay for their child as best they can, not the government. It's not snobbish, it's logical.

Your only glad that the benefits are cut now that YOU DON'T NEED THEM ! If you were still broke then I'm sure you'd be gutted ! Wow babies aren't expensive huh ? I'm the stingiest of them all but I know my self that the basics a child needs works out to be very expensive ! ...Wonder what you have deprived your kid ...
