Debate: Capital punishment

I don't think I'm opposed to them reading books and doing crosswords really but TV I am, I don't know why because I guess they don't NEED books or crossword puzzles either... like every human being needs some kind of rest time, I don't think I know what that should be or what it should entitle people to though

Anyway, the reason hard labour has been done away with is that in most industrialized nations the school of thought applied to prisons/justice is rehabilitating offenders rather than only punishing them.. to make them come out better people. I'm not against that but if my taxes are paying for prisoners to get college/university educations why can't my taxes pay for mine.. lol

Really? has no one ever made a mistake in their lives?! Some of these things could easily have happened to you.

A man I classed as my step brother. Beat a man to death so badly that they had to identify him by his dental records and the paramedics needed counselling because what they saw was horrific.

The day he did that my step brother ceased to be that and he became a monster in my eyes. I beleive he should be in a cell with a bed and a toilet thats it

I have another point to add..

Okay imagine that the prisoners were just sitting there day in day out, nothing to do etc etc.. do you not think that they'd get MORE violent inside through utter boredom? The poor prison officers already have a stressful job without 1000 men who are already sex deprived going mad out of their skulls cos they have nothing to do.

They don't do nothing though, they work and they get time outside to walk about etc. Also, in the low cat prisons they have free time inside where they can walk around and talk to others. They aren't just stuck in a little cell day in day out. They do have stuff to do. Imo, that just shouldn't include watching TV etc.

Maybe make them work around the prison? I just don't think they should have TV's. There is plenty they can do i.e. work, training anything. Cleaning the toilets, helping in the kitchen. then they have what they call execise area. Where they can do fitness. I do not mind all of that. I just don not liek teh Idea of people like gareth having a tv in his cell (he told me brother he liked it there)

He will probably re offend just to get back in when he comes out as everyone has disowned him

All prisons are different, and some really are tough.

That's for really extreme criminals though, murders, rapists etc. Tbh, I don't think anthing would stop them being violent, TV or not. It's probably safest to keep them in their cell for that amount of time.

Education can work towards rehabilitation in some cases where as TV. Really serves no purpose. Or games consoles etc.

Education stimulates the mind, work occupys them. TV just isn't needed if all they do is sleep in their cell.

not many jails have games consoles i dont know any one who has had one so thats a select few! as for people saying youd like it here in prison do you not think thats just boys biggig them selfs up trying tio make them selfs look hard! or remember for some its a better more secure life than they ever had in child hood

yeh there not in there cell tghough they have limted acess to these remeber theres 30 or more prisoners in these rooms they only get a hour or so if that and they dont get to use them alot they dont sit on them all night and day! the people who get the extra hour after lock down are the cleaners as they dont get rec during the day so they get more time to use the pool tables telly ect! high security arent often open cells all day if there not at work ther locked up bare a hour i dont see the big deal??

it would be diff if they were in there rooms! they can save there wages (which are nothing) to buy freeview boxes in some jails it takes them over a year!

Really I don't see why you are saying that everything we say just isn't 'fair' or so it seems.
Honestly, it doesn't matter where they have TV's, point is, they have them. They murder someone and get to watch TV. They get enough money and can buy freeview etc.
They should be locked up with the bare essentails and that's it. They take someone else rights or violate someone elses human rights, why should they deserve anything bar the bare minimum of a bed, toilet, shower, food and water? They forefited that when they broke the law imo.

my uncle is a prison officer is the US, prison is no cake walk here at all. prisoners in administrative segregation have 23 hours a day in a cell and one hour in the yard...unless they've broken rules inside the prison and are on total lockdown.

better "behaved" prisoners can have jobs and can go out in the yard, but there aren't any tv's and they only get to talk to their loved ones through glass. do they deserve it? yes, but it is not easy. it also isn't easy on those with families that are left behind to deal with the real world.

what i don't agree with is a prison that is separate for white collar crimes. bernie madoff stole millions upon millions of honest people's hard earned money, they trusted him to keep their money safe for when they retired and most were left with nothing after his ponzi scheme. he's sitting in a low security prison with other white collar criminals able to come and go inside and outside as he pleases.


as for CP - i am for it in extreme cases such as jeffrey dahmer or the BTK murderer, serial killers/sociopaths that show no remorse or no signs of rehabilitation. watching the clips of BTK describe how he killed women chill me down to my bones ...and he can say it as if it were a recipe for a cake.

but not everyone is in for murder so should they not have tvs we were talking in general not just murders! so murders ect are so unstable there in secure prison hospital where they dont have tv games ect they dont tleave there room to even go ouytside


we need to remember not every one whos in top cat jails or high security have murderd people so should they all be aloud differt things?

No they shouldn't have seperate things.
You committed the crime, you should be taken out your life, put into prison with the bare minimums to teach you a lesson.
What lesson gets taught if you are put in jail for breaking the law, but you still have TV's, game rooms, free time etc. Nothing really.

I am sorry but I watch the Lock Up show that goes into the prisons in america and they are coddled there. I don't care what your crime was. You should not have cable tv in your cell. And yes they do have it in their cells because the last show I watched the other day was about a guy throwing a fit because his cable was not working for his tv in his cell. Showed the tv he has. They talked about how it was affecting others cable as well, so others had it too. I don't care if they are "being Good". I don't get rewards as an adult for following the rules of the law and behaving good. These are not children. These are adults. They broke the law. My cable is not free, so why is theirs? Whether they are in for a minor crime or a serious one they still commited a crime and should not be allowed the extras that people in society have because they work hard and follow the rules. If they want the extras they then should do their time, and come out, get a job and follow the letter of the law like everyone else and pay for the extras.
