Do you think that hospitals should provide formula milk?

I'm genuinely interested how this works in regards to preparing and sterilising. It was a nightmare just trying to get the shower free.

FTR, I breastfed in Hospital and if I'm lucky enough to have anymore I will do again (hopefully more successfully)

We are not talking about nappies, we are talking about food. I dont know about you but i didnt expect the hospital to provide my underwear but food yes.

bit off topic maybe...but the hospital actually did give me some cheap almost paper underwear!

Im hoping u took your own tho. :haha:

Boy i bet they were sexy!!!

oh they are mighty sexy, i got these too and those support pants things, looked like spanx. feck sake if i knew they were giving them free i wouldnt have paid 60euro for a real pair of spanx

hey no fair we got moved and nobody told me!!!!!!!!!!!! a note to the admins: can someone put in 2 more smilies: 1 - "run for the hills" (msn smilies) and 2: one with a can of red bull instead of coffee, i dont drink coffee

awwwwwwwwww they were just as sexy as paper knickers. and u could just rip them off, disposable. no washing nothing

Oh yes those fishnet sexy panties! I got 2 pairs and was told that when I wasn't wearing one pair to rinse out the other pair and hang them to dry! are ya kidding me! gross!

i havent read other replies as no doubt its turned sour as always but imo the hospital should have some for people who struggle with breastfeeding but it shouldnt be given out to people who just refuse to even try breastfeeding. I personally feel the nhs should be spendind money on staff etc in the maternity ward rather than formula for people that have already decided they aren't going to breastfeed, thats my opinion as i feel if they gave it out to everyone people wouldnt perciveer(sp?) with breastfeeding as it doesnt always work straight away it can take time and some practise

But you have NO idea why that person may not want to even try bf. I have heard of a few mothers that couldnt bear the thought of it due to sexual abuse etc

well as i said thats my opinion, im not getting into rows over something like this its ridiculous im entitled to my opinon if you dont agree with it then move on to the next post:shrug:

Im not trying to row, merely pointing out a perspective you may not have thought of.

This is a debate. Obviously there is going to be differing opinions :flower:

maybe if they were in black they might have been sexy. maybe i wasnt suppose to rip them off oopppssssssss. :haha:

Atleast they didn't tell you to turn them inside out. :haha: That's one way of saving money!

thats what i got told so i just threw them int he bathtub and turned the shower on and left them there to dry. the nurse came in and threw them away and gave me another pair...but i was only given one pair so what exactly did they want me to do while i was "washing" them?!

Go commando

For all the people who think we should have to pay for formula, i'm going to throw a question out there.

If your baby was say .. 3 months old, they are formula fed, and were hospitalized because they were ill .. would you expect the hospital to provide your childs formula? Or would you bring in a tin of formula for them give to your LO .. since a lot of you have been saying it should be your responsibility?

Personally I would be expecting them to feed my LO during his hospital stay, just as i'd expect them to feed me if I was staying there. What is the difference with a new born? They are still a patient in the hospital when they are minutes old, just like the would be if they were three months old , or 6 months old, or 11 months old, and in the hospital.

its happened and i took my own formula and a bag of breastmilk.

its called taking responsibility for your baby. Dont compare formula to food as its much more expensive, we both know that. and if me taking formula meant they could afford better machines/more nurses/better resources then id choose that over them providing formula.

But if they are ill in the hospital, they should be feeding them. Maybe a tin of formula is expensive. But my baby goes through one can a week. That costs 30$ . OH and I spent $125 a week on groceries. So to me .. it is cheaper to feed my baby then it is to feed me.

If Jarrett was hospitalized today and they told me they would not be feeding, obviously I would bring in formula for him, because I wouldn't let him go hungry, But .. I would file a complaint.
All human beings deserve to be treated equality no matter their age and if I was ill, the hospital would be feeding me so why shouldn't they feed him?

and as a mother, you should be responsible for providing that food for YOUR baby, however that may be, Not relying on someone else to do it for you.

If as a mother my child went into hospital would I have to supply her meals?

When my Mum was in hospital having a stent put into her bowel tumour we were expected to provide her food. The operation as to prolong her life and to ensure she did not die of a burst bowel but the hospital did not have the funds/ equipment to provide her 'special diet'. And what was her special diet? Clear, strained soup which I made up and took in to the hospital in flasks. So very often the patient does have to provide their own food on the NHS.

I would be interested to see how much money it does cost to provide formula in the hospital. The cost per person will be small but the overall cost will be substantial. As I said pages ago, there needs to be a very close look taken at where the NHS is spending money and some tough choices need to be made. I would much rather ensure that money was spent on saving lives/ providing the treatments people need but are often refused than providing milk. We need to think about what the priorities are for the NHS and what their budgets should be spent on.

I do not care whether you FF or BF. I made my choice to BF and I am perfectly happy with that, if you chose to FF and are happy then that is fine too. These threads only become FFvs BF debates if you let them There is no need to turn debate into a slanging match or an opportunity to have wee digs (or not so wee digs) at other posters.

I think if a mother decided before she has her baby that she ISNT going to breast-fed then SHE she provide the Milk, simply because that baby will be on the same milk then from birth, and also costs a lot for the NHS to provide.

I do think they NHS could milk for mothers who try but it doenst work out, they could charge for that.

I breastfed for a week, and swiched to formula, i didnt get any support to help me breastfeed or anything but in the long run it was the best decision for me to swtich.

I think there should be an emergency supply in hospital incase a mother struggles, as i said that could even cost if thats the only way.

I was only is hospital one night, so i was out before i decided to switch as my baby needed milk, but if i was still in i would like to think that there was milk there just in case.

I would also like to point out that not all BFers use lactation specialists etc. Just because you BF does not mean that you are using all these services.

I've found a lot of the indian/pakistani patients have their relatives come in every meal cept breakfast with their food  The only crap thing is we're not allowed to heat it up in the microwave for them so they have to bring it in containers that keep the heat in.
