Does anybody else not really do Valentines Day?

Me and my OH celebrate it (on the wrong day  he's working today). It makes me sad that some people have the view that 'they show their partners everyday' (I've noticed it a lot this year).....so do I! I tell Chris I love a million times a day and give him lots of cuddles/kisses/send him nice messages. Valentines day is just something fun to do :)

I always think what the difference is between showing your partners you love them on Valentines day, like you do your Mum on mothers day  i'm an uber romantic though

No, we don't do anything. I only realised it was V day when my sister mentioned it today. My OH isn't even here! He's at work for another week. He won't call to say happy V day and I won't be bothered!

It's just a commercialised day apparently made up by clintons to get more card trade :haha:.... actually not sure if that's just a rumour!

The Clintons thing is an urban myth... Saint Valentine was associated love (he performed forbidden weddings for soldiers, they weren't supposed to marry) and it's been a Christian festival for centuries - and has been about romantic love. Valentines gifts and handmade paper greetings started around 500 years ago.

Nowadays though it does feel like crass commercialism has taken over. I've never celebrated it as I'd rather have a bit of spontaneous romance on another night of the year. I did once buy a valentine - I'd been dating my ex for one week and valentines was our 3rd (I think) date. Since it was a bit early to reveal my cynical tendencies haha I thought I'd better make a token effort and buy him a cheap box of chocolates. He turned up with flowers and TWO bottles of perfume... oops! It still didn't work out though and I've now got a wonderful hubby who does loads of spontaneous romantic things! :) and the poor guy gets grumpy ole me for a wife lol!

not big on it at all - I don't really like flowers or romance generally though

the worst thing is that it's our anniversary and we still don't see it as a biggie ahah

oh you guyyysssss :haha:

In all honesty I actually find Valentines day a bit depressing. It is all so tacky and forced...I'm not really the romance type either tho.

Yeah I know right, I barely ever say anything slushy to my boyfriend as it is so a whole day dedicated to it is my idea of hell. I made him an 'I choo choo choose you card' though - sorted.

we don't even acknowledge it :haha: we prefer to be more lovey dovey than usual when a day actually means something to us (like anniversaries etc!) than on a day we're "supposed" to....and we're actually very romantic as a couple and I love hearts etc...just not on the one day everyone else does LOL

Ha cute! I wonder if it reflects badly on me that it took me approximately 0.01 seconds to know that you were referencing Lisa's card to Ralph

It's never a bad thing to have an extensive knowledge of Simpsons references!

We're not celebrating it never have! I would (and dh knows this) be more pi$$ed off if he wasted money buying overpriced flowers tbh! I don't need to be told on what day I can show my husband I love him IYKWIM, in the same vein we do not 'do' mothers day or fathers day either.

ETA: Reading that back I (we) sound like a misrable sod lol we're not though :haha:

We've never really celebrated it either. Its a bit too commericalised for my liking. We normally buy each other a pint, but even thats off the menu this year!

I also think that flowers/chocs etc on Valentines Day are pretty generic and to me thats not romantic at all.

Nope not us. Although I did find it adorable when my LO gave a valentines biscuit she made at nursery to her little buddy and told her she loved her - too cute!

As husbands a restaurant manager he works every valentines day so we dont really celebrate it we bought each other a card and i will make us a meal 2moz night when hes off but nothing expensive or special. We make a big deal of our wedding anniversary and the date we started going out instead.

We've done cards and I got some flowers, we had a takeaway that's it really
