is/was your LO a really bad sleeper? support and advise thread!

The wonder week chart wasn't true for my LO AT ALL so I don't believe it :)

Kosh - I'm sure you know who she is; she's been pretty prolific lately. Thing is, I feel for her, I really do, as I know it's exhausting and you feel like you're doing something wrong, but I honestly don't think I ever expected my LO to NOT wake up loads when he was that little...I don't think I had any real expectations other than expecting him to improve rather than regress with age. I didn't start to get actually concerned about it until he was around 6 months though and worse than he had been as a newborn.

^^ agree 100%. I had no expectations whatsoever, I knew he'd wake up loads. At first I was surprised that he would spend 3 hours nursing in the middle of teh night, but that was it. But as you say, what got me concerned was the 'getting worse' with age...

Tell the HVs to mind their own business. I still offer to feed my LO whenever he wakes in the vague desperate hope that it'll make him go back to sleep quicker (not working lately AT ALL). If he takes it enthusiastically then I figure he's hungry and I will ALWAYS feed him if he's hungry regardless of what any HV says. I think you're doing exactly the right thing.

Your HV would have a field day with me! On a good night LO will feed twice during the night, on a bad night she'll feed 5 or 6 times and comfort nurse a lot in between. If I don't nurse her sometimes she'll go back to sleep but only for 5 or 10 mins before she wakes and tries to nurse again. Every baby is different and I don't care who says they don't need feeding at night, my baby IMO does need it so I'm not going to refuse her.

we were also told to try and give water at night, as he should not need it. she actually said: babies are very clever, once you give them water they won't wake up anymore because they'll remember and think 'oh, no, I'll only get water I rather carry on sleeping' :dohh:

Oh Clairey hun, so sorry to hear about your mum being poorly and wishing her a speedy recovery. I know exactly how you feel about being torn with the demands of being with LO and being with your mum. Obviously I was in a different situation but I used to feel guilty leaving L to be with my mum but so needed to be with my mum, but my time was limited. Your mum will be well looked after and I'm sure she fully understands. Its hard taking a baby to the hospital too! Much love coming your way xxx

Ps other ladies I fed LO her bottle in the middle of the night until she stopped doing the bottle cry, she was 7 1/2 months and I was sick of people telling me she didn't need it!

Will read throught the recent posts when I get more time.Just wanted to unload as today has been pretty horrid.
It was my Mums birthday today which should be nice, but she ended up being taken to hospital in an ambulance due to severve abdominal pains:cry:
She is being kept in as they aren't sure what is causing it,possibly a twisted bowel:wacko:
It's just such a worry! I love my Mum soooo much and she is like my best friend,I just want her home safe.
I wish I could do more to help her but with LO it is so much harder than when I was childless.
I hope she is going to be ok.
Sorry to go all OT on you all.
Let's pray for good nights.
:hugs:

:hugs::hugs::hugs: Hope your mum is better soon Claireyb

Claireyb - I've been thinking of you. How is your mum doing? :hugs:

Angel - the wonder weeks didn't seem to apply to my LO at all...unless he's been going through a continuous stormy wonder week since birth in which case he should be a absolute genius by now :haha:

Chocolala - sorry your mum got you down but I'm glad Lily had fun :flower:

Kosh - I love the idea that babies will 'remember' not to wake up :haha: I also like the advice that they should be able to go without a feed at some indiscriminate age. I should be able to stop eating cake, but what can you do?!

Well, George was a nightmare last night again. Up at 10pm, 12.15am, 2.45am, 4am and 6am then up at 8am :dohh: I'm starting to wonder if it is discomfort from teething or something (although he's never that bothered in the day) as the only difference from last night and the amazing night before was that I gave him some nurofen on the first night as I could see his teeth were bothering him. I've given him calpol tonight (I'm not going to give it to him every night obv but want to see whether it makes a difference). Today was mental as he woke up later than usual which pushed his nap into the time that we were at a baby group where he REFUSED to sleep so ended up having only 45mins nap ALL DAY as we had family over in the afternoon so he was too distracted to settle :growlmad::growlmad: I'm assuming this will lead to a horrendous night. We shall see.

Hope everyone else's evenings and nights go well

^^ This is actually really funny. Last night my LO went to bed at 7:30pm,and woke up at 10:30pm, 12:30, 2:30am, 4:30am, 6:30am and then up at 7am...but I consider that quite a goodnight!! :haha:

claire - how's your mum? :hugs:

chocolala - glad lily enjoyed her day!

angel - the WW are hit and miss for us...

sleepy dust :dust:

Kosh - you're right! I would have probably been pleased with that night a while ago, but I've been spoiled by how well he did the night before so now have that as my yardstick  I know he can do it! I just don't know why he won't!!

Thank you ladies, it gives me hope when you say wonderweeks and all that didn't apply to your LOs. And anyway when I think about it, since Dom is about 4 months old he has become much more relaxed and fun during the day. Before that he basically hardly did anything but cry. I now wonder if maybe I was doing something wrong with nap time, i.e. not making him have more somehow and he was just constantly overtired. So unless that chart is talking about sleep times rather than awake times, it didn't really apply to us. Since about 4 months we always say that daytime Dom is so much fun and so adorable but that night time Dom is a bit of a nightmare. It has gotten soo much better in the last week or so that I am clinging to this cause to go back to the hourly wakings after tasting a lil more sleep would be bitter! So lisa I totally understand where you coming from!

Hope you all get good nights ladies.

Claire I am thinking of you and your mum and sending lots of :hugs:

i only had a 5hr stretch once, and that was when LO was about a week old! :dohh::haha:

have you ladies seen that text 'awake training'? it was posted a while ago, it's really funny. i'll try and find it

Angel - I'm yet to read one single piece of 'standard' baby advice that actually applies to my LO. Sleep begets sleep - nope, once he reaches a certain weight he'll sleep - nope, weaning will help - nope, formula will help - nope.
He's clearly not one to follow the crowd :winkwink:

O/T but where is Lulu? I wonder how she's doing

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about it

Genius

can't find it!

but I found this instead:

So it's 4am in the morning
And I'm thinking that sleep's all I need
But you're beginning to stir and awaken
It's time for your second night feed

According to what everyone tells me,
You 'should be sleeping right through'
But although it seems strange I admit it,
I love this precious time with you.

It's quiet, it's dark, and we're sleepy,
My fingers gently trace your skin
I have some time to appreciate your beauty,
As you're settling down to tuck in.

I vow not to take it for granted,
This secret, special time that we share,
But instead I'll relish every moment
Just to show you how much that I care.

For one day you'll be all grown up
And I'll still be awake in my bed
But this time I'll be awake worrying,
That you'll come home safe instead.

So whilst you're small and you need me
Have as many night feeds as you like
For this time is precious and I'll miss it
So take your time in sleeping all night

:cloud9::cry:

Aww! That is so sweet! Now I feel a little guilty. But actually I don't mind feeding my boys at night at all, if they need it. It is the in-between-wakings that I don't cherish.

:cry::cry:

I've just had to try to explain to OH that I'm sniffling because I'm going to miss night feeds.

Flabbergasted doesn't even begin to describe him :haha:

Ha ha! I momentarily missed night feeds (well BF actually more so when I stopped) but his new happy self in the day more than made up for it.

Yeah, I had a momentary lapse.

OH has slapped some sense into me (figuratively of course :winkwink:)

Hello ladies, I just wanted to come on to give you an update on my Mum.
She went down for surgery about an hour ago. They still don't know what is causing the stomach pain, but think it could be a blockage in the bowel of some kind. It is quite an invasive op as they will have to make an approx 6" incision vertically on her tummy, through the abdominal wall.
They will insert an epidural for pain relief when she comes round,so I imagine without it the pain would be very bad indeed.
I said to her it sounded alot like she was having a baby.
She was so scared,as she has never had an op before:cry:
It looks like she will have to stay in hospital for up to 2 weeks!!!!:cry:
I'm knackered, but don't want to go to bed until I know she is ok.

Thanks for thinking of her (and me).
xx:hugs:
