Just curious, do any of you drink?

As soon as I found out I was pregnant I did not want to have anything, not even a drop. The other night oh's mom gave him the rest of her wine, and i've had this huge wine kick for about a year now and I literally could not help myself. I poured half a glass of wine in a small wine glass. I consumed only half of it within an hour and gave oh the rest. Felt completely guilty though. I won't be doing that too often since there is never any wine in the house and its apparently the only alcohol that I can't say no too.. I only needed a taste though and it was enough for me.

I think where there is any doubt in the safety of something, it is best to avoid it. I can confess to the odd half sip of my hubbys red wine when I just was curious if it tasted any good. I do keep craving beer like mad so bought some 0% alcohol beer and can drink it all the time. What's the point of drinking anyway? You shouldn't drink enough to get drunk....but I guess that's just me and I can live without the taste of alcohol.

Chocolate however....:munch:

Have you never in ur life gotten drunk then??? i find that extremely hard to believe...unless you have NEVER EVER DRANK ALCHOHOL!

I think she meant you shouldn't drink enough to get drunk when youre pregnant. Not all the time!

She denied havin drank but i cud smell it so bad on her, it was awful to see. but there was nothing we cud do until she admitted her illness. we obviously advised her to go home!
She is now in a rehab and hopefully gettin better for herself and her kids!

i was gonna say this as well... crossed wires i think xx

I had the occasional half a beer or sip of my husbands drink while I was pregnant.

See, I just don't get it... I'm sure people wouldn't give a baby alcohol once it's born? How is it different when you know the growing baby inside is getting the alcohol you drink?

The nhs website says that the baby can't process alcohol as quickly as we can, therefore is exposed to more of it for longer. https://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/2270.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=131

I'm not trying to start an argument, I know these threads have a habit of going bad because people have strong opinions. But it's a forum and we're all entitled to voice our opinions.... I guess we each just do what we feel is right/acceptable based on the information we're given...

Here in Australia they recommend obstaibibg from alcohol during pregnancy and even whilst breast feeding.

Since I went off contraception, I haven't had a sip. Was very tempted a few weeks ago when I went on a vineyard tour weekend with some girlfriends. I just don't feel comfortable drinking, even though there are plenty of women out there that do. I'm generally not a huge drinker anyway but do love a glass of good red.

In my first tri I the thought, even the smell of alcohol made me want to be sick!! I guess that was natures way of preparing me for the months ahead of not drinking!

Here is Canada its not looked upon as good to drink while pregnant. I wasn't a big drinker before and have just made the decision that it isn't worth it so I have stayed away from alcohol completely.

I've not really had to think about drinking as that's been my biggest aversion in pregnancy, the smell makes me feel really sick, it was worse earlier on in pregnancy but its not so bad now, I had a glass for the photos for my anniversary and had one sip before wanting to gag, I would have avoided drinking either way because of the risk it poses however small :flower:

Firstly, no judgement, just wondering.

Well, they say its ok to drink red wine during pregnancy, and I've heard beer ocasionally as well? Here in the US, its far less culturally accepted than in Europe, but has gotten more common in recent years. I personally am too afraid to, even though studies have shown that an occasional drink is ok, though I may have a glass or 2 of red wine in 3rd trimester.

So, just wondering what doctors/midwives say in Europe? Have they gotten more strict or do they still say its ok to have red wine/beer while preg. And have any of you drank thus far? (Again, no judgement, I promise) What are your reasons for what you decided?

Thanks for sharing! :flower:

i have had a few red wines and a cheeky champas due to a graduation and a house warming i dont make a habbit but i do have the odd red wine x

There are lots of people who like to have a little drink but do not indulge to excess so they are drunk...I have never been drunk in my life ever i dont see any attraction in falling over, acting like a tit and puking all over the place not to mention the hang overs the next day. I do like to have a glass of wine or baileys. I have not had anything since I found out I was pregnant...although i confess that last week I poured a glass of baileys with ice (which I have been craving now for about 10 weeks) i dipped my tongue in it then dumped it down the sink... i am sure one sip would have been ok and the craving might have left but unfortunately its still here.

I agree, people know their own limits, and they soon find them out if they don't, people shouldn't be doing something they can't handle  for me I don't see the appeal of drinking to get drunk

I know that growing up all my friends all thought that I was a bit boring because I did not want to get drunk and obviously in the UK its a bit of a different culture... there are not many people growing up that never did it. I am fine with anyone that wants to drink and get drunk but it just has never been for me.

I have the very odd sip of my OH's beer, Just randomly I will have a craving just for the taste, but I wont drink more than a sip.

just checked the nhs website...
nhs do now advise to avoid alcohol completely when pregnant...

They change their minds all of the time.

Last year it was peanuts. Now, this year, that is perfectly acceptable.

Not that I condone anything we 'shouldn't' do, but our mothers and grandmothers ate and drank all the stuff we're told to avoid, and told to do so on medical grounds (!!!) and we're all here and health. I know times move on and research reveals more things but I think we can take things too far sometimes.

Just my opinion.

iam with you good out look on it if you ask me, my mam says that all the time "well i did it with you and you perfectly fine" rap us up in cotton wool its gets a little over the top some times the do's and dont can's and can'ts aahhh gets on my nerves!!!! lol

As I am reading this I am enjoying a small glass of red...

I didn't drink during first tri but since then I am allowing myself a glass on the weekend if I fancy it, which I don't always - last couple of weekends I haven't.

I only drink very nice, pricy wine at the mo. I figure since it is occasional I may as well go for something good. No expense spared for my baby ;) I have quite expensive taste anyway, and not really into spirits, aside from gin, but I haven't fancied it, and like to kid myself that there are health benefits associated with red wine (who knows whether there are or not? Just one more thing the 'authorities' continually change their minds about).

My grandmother, mother, MIL and GMILs drank a healthy amount when pregnant and the NHS guidelines change weekly; I personally don't believe there is any harm in the occasional glass. I'm not a scientist and not everyone will agree with this but it isn't their body or their baby...

this made me laugh! i too enjoy a good red, my friend who owns a restaurant brings back wine from italy and i have had a few bottles from her since 12 weeks not that i have had them all to me!!!! i will save that till after baby :happydance: i do enjoy a glass on the weekend and if i want it i will have it in moderation x

I haven't had a drink since I found out I was pregnant, and I found out the day before my period was suppose to arrive..

But I also agree with Goddess25, I do drink but NOT to get drunk, although I have gotten drunk before, it's not a good feeling.. But I know my limit and at home I keep bottles of wine because I do like the occassional drink or two.. but that's it.

I haven't had any drinks during my pregnancy. I didn't drink for a whole year before becoming pregnant either. I can't stand the taste of alcohol to be honest, and don't like the feeling of being drunk. :nope:

I'm in the minority on this one, however I have read and read on the subjects, spoke to doctors and a genetic councillor on the subject of alcohol.

People dont drink because of the risk of FAS or FASD which is a terrible terrible thing where children are malformed due to their mothers alcohol abuse.

It is interesting that the occurences of these 2 things are more documented in the US especially amongst ethnic and poorer backgrounds....(the reasons for this are below, the middle classes dont have the same badgering etc)
There is no denying FAS as there are many features associated with it, facial deformities being one of them and it is easier to diagnose these children.
Yet Europe has more lienient alcohol guidelines

Children who have been "diagnosed" with FASD (the lesser form, spectrum disorder) have been badgered into admitting they drunk during pregnancy, no account for prenatal diet, exposure to drugs, chemicals other than alcohol. With symptoms such as ADHD, ASD, moderate learning difficulties they have basically wanted a reason and alcohol although a contributing factor will not have been the only factor in these children having these conditions.
I work in a 90% muslim school where the mothers dont drink, and here is a shocker, we have children with all these things and the mothers didnt touch a drop.

I have a friend that works within genetics and councilling of mothers with children born with such conditions and most opinions off the record is that you have to pack away ALOT of alcohol, (talking alcoholic levels here) to damage your baby.

Also UCL (university college London) also did some research on the effects of light drinking on babies which actually had a positive effect, boys were less likely to have ADHD and girls less likely to have social and emotional problems.

Only 3 years ago the Uk was saying a glass of wine was safe to have a day, and the only reason NICE revoked this advice is because women went on benders, saving up their glasses and having a pile on the weekend, or overdoing it and having 1 HUGE glass of wine.

A good rule of thumb to go by when pregnant is if you are safe to drive you are safe to carry a baby. If you want a drink have one, but make sure you have had some food, drink it slowly, enjoy it have some water with it.

I'm probably going to get hammered for my opinion etc but as I said I have done a lot of reading and asking questions on the subject because I was confused about all the conflicting advice so I thought I'd make my own mind up through some research.

A bit of food for thought :)

Delly xxx

btw those who do want a glass First Cape have done a Cafe collection which has half the alcohol, its available in sainsburys and I have to say, YUM YUM!!
