So at my 24 week appt I was told that my amniotic fluid was on the low end of normal. Well today it was down to where it's considered low. Lost 2cm of fluid in 4 weeks. They're now sending me to a high risk dr. What happens now? They sent me to l&d for monitoring since she wouldn't move for the tech and to get fluids. I was having contractions while in the dr office, but they stopped by the time I got hooked up in l& d. They sent me home with instructions to drink more water, but I'm already drinking over 100oz per day, how much more do I have to drink? I'm confused as to where this is heading.

Mod I'm so sorry to hear that! Hopefully it will improve with more water intake. When do you see the high risk doc? Wish I had some answers for you. Huggs!

Thank you Dini! They're trying to get me in to see high risk on Friday, but booked me an appt for them on Friday just incase the high risk clinic can't fit me in. I'm just worried we'll be having a baby earlier than expected!

So sorry u have to deal with this:/ i went through this my last pregnancy....What were your levels? Mine were always lingering around a 5.5. Discovered at 28 wks when I went into preterm labor .... From then on I had NSTs 2-3 x wk until delivery ..... Anything below a 5 they usually emergency deliver .... It was sooooo stressful, I understand your constant worry :(
Not to alarm you, and who's to say this is even related.... but just want to share in case it could be of any help or lead as to why your fluids Are low.....
My son was born with horrible digestive issues....(he's now 4 and healthy) but it was a real struggle , lived in the hospital the first yr..... Well his GI specialist had asked me if they ever told me a red flag of low fluid is digestive issues.... We could have had an idea the entire time and had a dr lined up and been prepared... But nobody told us:( it really upset me.... I truly believe we could have had a lot less worry and heartache .....
Definitely ask your dr about any digestive issues.... It makes sense , babies swallow and pee and that makes up the fluid.... If they aren't swallowing properl they aren't peeing enough and the fluid isn't being produced as well as it should .....
Hoping this is not the case for you though !!! Hope it's just a precaution!! If you have any questions feel free to pm me :)
Wishing you the best of luck! Hang in there !!

I will definitely ask about that, thank you. They said the biggest pocket is 3.5cm and that 3 cm,was considered high risk, but wanted to see me anyways. But in a different sentence said I went from 9 to 7, so I'm not really sure? Its all confusing to me. I'll definitely ask what the level is when I go back on Friday. The tech did say she was swallowing good like she should be though.

Here is a quick suggestion : Try and drink as much as tender coconut water (with pulp) -about 3 or 4 a day .Make sure they are fresh and not the canned or bottled ones .
I have a preg friend with the same issue as yours , low amnio fluid at week 32 , but Tender coconut water with pulp helped her regain the fluids(got back to normal low) by week 34 .
There is no harm in trying-1) as it adds on to your fluid intake ,2) its yummy and 3) loaded with all goodie stuffs(nutrients) for your little one .

Good idea on the coco water ! Ok, they add up all the pockets of water to get their number....one pocket of 3.whAtever is good, but they probably want at least 2 big ones....I know when my total shot up to a 7 one day they were very pleased.... Sounds like they are taking good precautions.... That's great news baby is swallowing well:) you can most likely rule digestive out then... My little guy wasn't able to swallow right.... He had severe Gerd... At least you know you are being monitored and seeing a high risk dr puts you in the best hands :) try not to worry too much til u have to.... And ask lots of questions for your own piece of mind, don't feel stupid, it's your right to know what's going on :)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I cannot stand coconut water. It comes right back up if I attempt to drink it lol.

And I will ask questions, I was just surprised at the events that went down at the appt. I thought 28 weeks was early for low amniotic fluid but I guess not. I think im just worried about having a baby too early that I can't bring her home.

I imagine you'll have very close monitoring and possibly stay in hospital during the whole of this time. As soon as baby shows any signs of distress or its safer to deliver he or she will be delivered. Don't worry 28 plus weeks is a pretty good geatation, yes it's early but babies have survived from 22 weeks! Good luck and I hope you can keep your little one inside you for a few more weeks zx

When I went through this at 28 wks they told me 32 was the golden number .... They feel very confident of little to no problems by then and a very short hospital stay....

i hope all goes well mod. that is pretty scary and i hope u and baby are alright and u have no more contractions until closer to your due date..

Can I ask wat does drinking have anything to do with amniotic fluid? Does it regenerate when lost? I feel they shouldve given you more info. hope ur next appt goes well.

If you get dehydrated it can reduce amniotic fluid levels, so I guess the thought of ifvyou drink more it could slowly increase fluid levels x

^ that's exactly what they said. I guess your body needs more hydration than you think sometimes.

For the ladies that went through this, what gestation were your babies born at?

Is amniotic fluid the same fluid as when ur water breaks? I never knew that couold regenerate. Thanks

Even though I went into preterm labor at 28 wks, he actually stayed in until my due date ... I was set up for induction for the fact of low fluid ... Went into labor the day before my induction .....

Yes it is and it is constantly being replaced. So you need to keep drinking to ensure amniotic fluid is 'fresh'. I don;t know where it goes though but I do know once your waters break it can't be replaced,

So sorry to hear, I know what you're going through cause I just got hit with this yesterday as well. My levels have always been fine and for some reason, I went from a level of 14 to a level of 5 in a week. Not sure how or why or where the heck it went... lol.

I drink water like a fish and I'm wondering how I could possibly drink more unless I have a water bottle in my hand 24/7. Which I'm sort of doing now... we have a total of like 6 24 to 32 oz water bottles in our house and I'm constantly filling them all up and drinking them throughout the day.

My high risk doctor actually reviewed all the ultra sound pictures from yesterday and they did some sort of umbilical cord monitoring to make sure there was no compression and the baby had good movement and blood flow. He said there was nothing to worry about and it looked good. They didn't set me up for any additional monitoring and said I was ok to come back next week.... just have to keep monitoring the baby for movement.

I was sort of reassured but I still feel a little uneasy. If I'm not leaking fluid then where did it all go? Hopefully it was just a fluke or the baby was in a weird position where they couldn't get a good reading on one of the quadrants... blah.

Good luck and I hope everything goes ok!

Ah thank you! Mine wasn't nearly as drastic of a loss, but exactly, where did it go? I hope they tell me tomorrow that it's nothing to worry about as well. She was very active last night after getting fluids so hopefully I'm just dehydrated and that did the trick.

Well I'm happy to announce that I am no longer in the danger zone! Fluid level jumped from 7cm to 13cm in just 2 days and I'm so happy. I was so worried but those fluids they pumped into me must have Really helped. I get to continue seeing my regular ob and get to kiss the high risk dr goodbye!
