Mayhem Babies! May 2011 mummies and babies

Ahhhhh so this is when BFing takes over then huh lol Should I stop him midway on the bad side or let him do the hour or what he wants then pop him over?

I let em do until they come off the side they're on or when they start flutter sucking then winding and offer the other side:flower: Eilidh sometimes rotates sides all evening:haha:

He does that flutter thing then after a few minutes he suckles properly, then has a rest and does the flutter thing. he doesnt let me go through pmsl

:haha: We describe that as otherwise in my house lol. When his sucks are generally ore flutter than proper you can take him off and wind. Will take him a bit longer on bad side from having the thrush though.

My kids just stole my M andM's:growlmad:

Joshua has a full bag of M&Ms he got at Easter, they unopened on the shelf you want them? lol they have little bunnies on the shell pmsl

Thanks so much for the advice hun it really is being greatfully appreciated. Id never have managed this BFing without you ladies x

lol cool I'll take em:munch:

No worries on the advice, i wish I'd had this info when I was first bfing:hugs:

There's easter eggs and rabbit marshmellows on there too lol... would you like?

Mmmm easter egg:haha: They dont really have proper easter eggs here so yes please! Will swap for some cactus candy I have in our cupboard...

cactus candy? lol

Dont think this little man is going to poop anytime soon so looks like Im in for an unsettled night so going to go upstairs now and try rest for the small amounts of time he rests. Any ideas on a constipated newborn? Well i assume its constipation, or trapped wind, but he has been trumping away like a trooper this evening, but no poops.

I think Anberlin has reflux, really badly. She burps loud man burps often, she's been screaming at me all day today, she's not sleeping during the day, she's spitting up a lot, but most often she's gagging, sputtering and swallowing what she spits up. The times she does bring it all the way up, it's a lot. I think it may also be the reason she's not eating well from the breast and still appears hungry less than half an hour after coming off the breast. She'll take an entire feed from a bottle but the symptoms above still come. She's screaming and arching her back and gagging and sputtering while screaming and arching her back. It's really bad. She's screaming until she's red in the face, won't take a soother or latch when she's screaming that hard. Today, she's been awake for 7 and a half hours straight, with the exception of 3 or 4 10 minute naps before she wakes screaming again.

I don't know what to do. My first instinct says doctor, but it's a long weekend and our doctor isn't open until Tuesday and I sure as hell don't want to take my 2 week old to a hospital.

Help? Opinions?

Is his poop still soft? If it is he's not constipated, I asked the doc about this as Eilidh only goes once a week. Bf babies do go longer in general without pooping as the milk is matched so closely to their needs there is not much waste left. Sounds more like trapped wind, hes farting alot which is great, maybe try a little warm water and a warm bath.

Cactus candy is like sticky cubes of jelly lol its the weirdest thing I've ever tasted:haha:

Does sound like reflux, get her to a doc tomorrow. There are things that can help, gaviscon, ranitidine even domperidone to help. She needs to be looked at in case of pyloric stenosis. My son was on all these meds and it helped as did elevating his moses basket so he wasn't lying so flat. Have your other kids not had reflux?:hugs:

Misread its a long weekend, I'd say you're ok to wait for tuesday but go with instincts:flower:

New, get a qtip and put some vaseline on it. Spread his bum cheeks and very gently insert the qtip about half inch. The stimulation should cause him to pass any trapped wind or poop. Always worked like a charm for Isaiah.

She screams even when elevated. She's in so much pain right now, she's so tired, she just had a full bottle and she's still screaming as if someone is stabbing her. It breaks my heart. Neither of my other two had it.

She has not stopped screaming in 8 hours.

Poor girl:hugs: Maybe its best gettig her looked at sooner then to put your mind at rest and to check it isnt pyloric stenosis. Thats severe and the vomiting is often pretty projectile. I've had 3 kids with pretty bad reflux, Eilidh doesn't thankfully but its a horrible thing to go through.

The only symptom she doesn't appear to have is slowweight gain/weight loss. I think it's because she gets a bottle when she hasn't fed well. Her latch is perfect but she does not eat well from the breast. She always screams after and always acts and appears hungry after, even when she's been on for two hours.

My kids never got the slow weight gain either because they were constantly feeding to replace what they puke and some always gets absorbed before the puke so they managed to grow.

Brandi- my older daughter did just this- ends up she was allergic to my milk! it's VERY rare, but does happen- she was also allergic to cows milk and soy- So if you try treating reflux and that doesn't work, look into allergies! we eventually put her on a formula called nutramogin (sp?) that the milk enzimes are already broken down so she could digest them. I know how hard this is, it really is heart breaking! Get help when you can and take care of her in shifts- you need your sleep so you can be as calm and soothing as possible for her <3

Well, the verdict (so far) is GERD. She's been put on one medication that she gets once a day to control the acid, but I can't make out the name, and she's also been put on domperidone. We'll be following up with the midwife about how she's doing in one week.

The doctor said that this could actually be the reason why she's not feeding well from the breast, instead of the lack of sucking theory. Apparently she may be refluxing during her feeds and pulling off, opting for a break from the pain rather than finishing her feed in one session and being satisfied. This in turn translates to constant feeding, for 2+ hours even.

On another note, I had this lovely conversation with the triage nurse:

Nurse: And her name?
Me: Anberlin
Nurse: A-M or A-N?
Me: A-N.
Nurse: Are you sure?
...
...No, I don't know how to spell my own daughter's name
