Reasons you SHOULD breastfeed

Thanks for the olive oil tip Blutea. Got anymore little tips like that? I'd never have known that there are alternatives to Lasinoh etc if I hadn't read this thread.

Also I was watching Daybreak this morning and I think they said that only 6% of mums in Britain breastfeed for or over 6 months. I think it's great if you manage to breastfeed for 6 hours or 6 months but I didn't realize that the numbers were that low x

i was breastfeed and my immun system is shite! if someone is ill i get it ten times worse, i catch colds really easily. i have eczema, mild asthma. where as i do no someone who was just bottle fed n they are rarely ill.

i think it has more to do with genes and the person then how they are fed, but ofcourse the natural way is better as its nature after all.

The longer a baby/toddler is breastfed, the greater the protective effect for the immune system. The WHO recommendation is 2 years but many toddlers would go much longer, if allowed (there are exceptions, of course.) The average weaning age is between 2-4 years of age, world wide. Nature dictates that a child should be breastfeed for about five years because their immune system is still developing and benefits from breast milk. With all that said, genes do play a big part in how healthy an individual is (diet, exercise and sleep are also factors.) Breastfeeding is just one part of the equation and it is an excellent way to start off the first few years of life (or for however long you are able to breastfeed.)

I also read that breastfeeding has a tranquiliing effect on baby hence why mine falls asleep after feeds.

https://www.askdrsears.com/html/2/T020100.asp is a great page I think for breastfeeding advice and information.

Oh yes, I love the "milk drunk" effect. :haha:

After my bout with thrush, I switched to cloth nursing pads and I love them!

Maternity belly bands work great as a belly cover up while breastfeeding.

I'm sure there's more but I can't think of them right now.

I have been breastfed for 3 years!

My mum always partially attributed the fact that I was the top student in my generation :amartass: to the breastfeeding (apparently a lot of people told her not to breastfeed after a few months, but she didn't listen!)

I believe anyone who is capable of breastfeeding should! I honestly think that no harm can come from breastfeeding.

It is shocking that some people find it 'pornographic'...

I love this video because it is so encouraging and sentimental-

That was an awesome video! Love this thread too!

Lovely post  I love that it's in a tri-section as well... why not get the mind working? :haha: Might help combat the whole pregnancy brain thing ;) Anyways, great post hun !
I skimmed through and seen a few of the " I feel bad, it makes us feel bad etc..." stuff and seriously, it's not meant to, but to spare a few feelings, I think the information still needs out there, and if it bothers someone to read, don't read it. The right decision is an informed one, no matter what you choose and when not given the choice, you do your best and do what is best for your baby :hugs: Again, lovely post blutea, and any ladies who have any questions, the breastfeeding section is just a click away. :flower:

I'm super impressed that this thread became what I hoped- full of great questions, encouraging words and a place where expecting mothers could gain confidence to breastfeed. It's so important to be informed, have accurate information and know where to find the right support, especially when times get tough. I'm just so glad we could help inspire mommies to breastfeed. :hugs:

I love the start of that vid, Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try. true words and dosnt just go for breastfeeding that statement. I had no sound so hope no words where said but its a nice vid. Your baby is also an accomplishment not only have you had it in your womb for 9 months you have also nourished it yourself.

The video has a very pretty song playing in the background but no words.
Is it silly that that video makes me cry? Happy tears of course.

My favorite reason is "breastfeeding a toddler is normal and natural."

would be nice if I didnt have shocked faces when i say William still breastfed .

I know what you mean! I get that too. I have found it helps when I confidently say, "My son is breastfeeding" and I leave the word "still" out of it. It's hard for others to question a confident statement.

Dragonfly- In your situation all you need to do is explain that the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for at least the first two years. Who can argue with that?! LOL
