Reflux Help & Support Thread

My LO seems worse early morning & HV said I should give her last dose of ranitidine as late at nite as possible, so trying that now

Thinking of you all :hugs:

I am hoping you ladies might be able to give me a bit of advice...:flower:

Ivy is a bit of a sicky baby but people (mainly my parents) keep telling me that it is a normal amount and I am stressing over nothing. They are comparing her to me as a baby (I was FF) and apparently I regularly projectile vomitted an entire feed across the room! It sounds silly but sick stresses me out much more than crying and I hate the smell of the sicky muslin squares and bibs :nope:

When my LO is burped she pretty much always brings back up a little bit of milk and other times she will bring back up quite a bit which she will spew all the way down herself. The times I hate is when it is quite a while after a feed and she brings back 'chunky' sick where the solids have separated out of the liquid.

She gets hiccups at least 4 x a day and she is always snuffly first thing in the morning.

What I am not sure about though it whether this is just normal baby sicking, I am fortunate that she is very content and she doesnt cry lots during or after a feed and she doesnt seem uncomfortable. With BF she does like to feed very little and often, especially in the evenings when the sick is worse. Should I just be thankful she is happy or is this something to bring up with the doctor at her 8 week check?

Thanks in advance :flower:

We have had a good last few days. Madelyn has not been crying excessively or uncomfortable. Of course she is still sick everywhere, but that is easier to deal with on good days. She is eating 6oz every 3hrs now and she is a champ at eating, just keeping it down is the issue.

Alright, so I have worked it out.

Madelyn eats at least 6 bottles a day x 6 oz a bottle = 36 oz
She probably manages (at a guess) to puke up 2 oz after each bottle, so really she is only getting around 24 oz a day. Is that ok for a baby her age? I don't think it is, I think my son was still needing that by 8 or 9 months. ??

Hi Amelie. I am sorry you have to go through this. To me (and I am by no means an expert) this does sound like reflux. Especially if she is still spitting up after an hour of feeds this is not so 'normal'. I get where your parents are coming from, I got told that a lot, I am not sure how much they knew back then about reflux etc.

Having said that, a trip to the doctor will get you an answer. Although they don't tend to help much if the baby is still putting on weight ok and he/she is in not much pain.

I hope you get some answers soon!

Amalie - could well be reflux, although I wouldn't worry to much as long as she's happy and gaining weight. Perhaps just mention it to the Dr?

Silaslove, I think as long as she's gaining it should be fine?

Well madams reflux is under control according to the Dr, she's back on 10mg of Losec and the hypoallergenic formula Neocate. It will take about 10 days to transition across.
I'm so relieved to have answers and rather sad to be stopping BFing, although :yipee: for being able to eat properly again in a few days!
He thinks the vomiting and bad poo will settle down once she's moved across too. We go back to see him in 3 months to discuss weaning etc

Fairie that is brilliant :)

I hit my 3 month bf milestone tomorrow :wohoo: But the past 2 days I have felt my supply isn't so good, it might be growth spurt I dunno.

He's been ok and settling at night, but was sick last night and this morning so I am continuing without the gaviscon (except in the bedtime bottle)

AP - It does sound like it could be reflux, but again if she is happy and gaining weight then it is just a laundry issue. Gaviscon could help to thicken her food in an attempt to stop bringing it back up. Evan has always gained well and is still very sick even with the gaviscon but it did really settle him.

Hi Ladies can I join you, we've had 6 months of hell with reflux and some days I really struggle to get out of bed as it's getting to me so much. Our lo has been round the houses with milk, aptamil 1st, nutramigen, enfamil ar, cow & gate comfort, neocate and none of them seemed to be making a difference. We've been to a herbalist, homeopathy, cranial oestopath christ knows how much money we've spent on trying to find the miracle cure for her. At first she screamed nigh on 20 hours a day and with 2 older children to see to it has been a nightmare. She's now back on comfort milk as this seems to be the best of a bad bunch, we've now upped meds Losec 2 x 10mg per day and we're starting to have ok days. I'm still pretty much tied to the house as I dread feeding her in public as she's started to reflux the milk out her nose and chokes it's very frightening so I'm nervous of this happening in public. I know if someone asked me if I was ok I would end up in tears. I'm so lucky I've a very supportive hubby, mum & sister without them I would be broken.

What milk are you giving your lo's I keep hearing there is a close link with dairy intolerance, Isla has very loose green nappies and almost like snot in them however when I've tried to wean her onto hypo milk she seems so much worse and ends up constipated which can't be nice for her either. She a barium swallow which thankfully showed her refluxing even with the tiniest amount of liquid that we managed to get into her.. I hate reflux it's a bloody nightmare!!!!!

Anyway sorry for the long post I just wanted you to know I know what your going through sending hugs to all. :flower: xxxx

Argh we just had a bad feed, lots of crying, arching etc, he did used to be like this with all feeds so i guess it's an improvement somewhat, though he was upset last night with his 2am feed :( i hate seeing him like that

*HUGS*

Welcome to Reflux xx

OMG having a really bad Reflux day - LO has been sick 4 times in 1 hour, since his last feed. He is getting really stressed, crying and generally feeling sorry for himself.

Doc at the health centre does not think that it is dairy intolerance, got to wait until I see consultant at the hospital on 4th Feb - not long to wait!

Seems that his eczema is worse on days when his reflux is bad!! Any idea why?

My Dr. says my little one has reflux because of her noisy breathing...always sounds like she needs to cough something up....but she rarely spits up? She is unhappy all the time and the Dr. has her on Zantac. Anyone else have reflux without the actual spitting up part?

I am glad it isnt just me that thinks it is a bit weird - my parents were making me think I was a head case!

She is gaining OK - she is dinky though but all in proportion, I will mention it to the doctor but I guess if she is happy and gaining I will just have to get used to me/her/my house smelling of baby sick :dohh:

I think that is silent reflux...

As horrid and stinky as it is I am used to the sick now!! Just have to have bibs/muslins/change of clothes on hand at all times :D

MrsNovBaby...the paed I saw on Monday said eczema along with the reflux can sometimes be linked with a cow's milk protein allergy which is apparently different to lactose intolerance.

chobby...I believe Silent Reflux is reflux without the spitting up. Perhaps others on here know more about silent reflux...

Finn has silent reflux. Instead of vomiting the acid comes up and then goes back down again. We just started on gaviscon but I can't see any difference yet, does it take a while to kick in?

We have had an awful day today and actually contemplated taking him to hospital, not sure what good it would do? He has screamed the whole time he's awake and I can feel the acid coming up in waves. He's wheezing badly and I just feel so helpless. We've got baby clinic tomorrow so will have a chat with the hv but he's not gaining well at all. He was 8lb 3 at birth and is only 8lb 14 seven weeks later. Am I right in thinking he should be referred to a paediatrician if he has reflux and poor weight gain?

Yup, no spitting but screaming, arching, coughing, wheezing, hiccups etc are all symptoms of silent reflux.

Ecezma is indeed a symptom of cmpa, again which is different to lactose intolerance.
True lactose intolerance is very rare, however temporary intolerance is common as a result of gastroenteritis (the runs basically!) so it is not unheard of for babies with allergies to get diarrhea as a symptom of the allergy (my girl gets it badly from the dairy - along with the skin issues) which can then lead to temporary lactose intolerance.

Any questions on cmpa or allergies and testing feel free to ask, we're just been through it all!!

Janettekaren - yes, I def think you should be referred to a pediatrician :hugs: just don't take no for an answer and keep pushing for it.
Gaviscon should help almost immediately, but if he's in that much pain I would think something like Losec would be more suitable - it will reduce the production of acid as well as neutralizing it to a degree.

Farie - good to hear things are getting better, hope it stays that way

What an awful day today, I can't get milk into Macy at all.

Today has been -

7am 1oz
10.30am 1oz plus managed to spoon feed 0.5oz
1.30pm almost 3oz
4.30pm 1.5oz
7.30pm 2oz

She'll probably take 6-7ounces over night so that's only 15-16 ounces every 24 hours. She's not even in any pain when feeding any more as it's completely managed with the omeprazole but she just doesn't want to eat. I have been trying to give her little tastes of solids morning and night like the paediatrician said but I'm scared to give her more than a teaspoon or two as I don't want her to take even less milk.

My OH thinks we should go for the tube feeding now before she loses more weight and gets ill but I'm just not sure. It could be good as it might get her appetite back up and it'll get some calories and nutrition into her to help the weight gain but what if I never get her to take a bottle afterwards?
