Reflux Help & Support Thread

Nightmare ollies had a crying fit today and really irritated his reflux he screamed for an hour solid was horrid

I dont think the lf is doing us any favours but then again tje bottle of a gold seems to have irritated him !

Im going tp gp back to the aptamil comfort i think with colief atrast his poo will be normal

Last night was bad! Up 4x with nasty burps, none of which could be consoled! 9 1/2 months... my poor little man. It's nearly impossible to burp a 9 month old baby but he still needs it badly  He is almost 30lbs and can fling himself right off my lap, I can't do a chest hold anymore even!

The paed visit went well, he's happy for her to stay on 20mg Losec daily and has put her on Erythromycin 3x daily to try to help the vomiting as hes a little concerned she's not processing her food fast enough.

But generally he's pleased with her, shes gaining along the 50% percentile perfectly and is happier in herself.
He wants us to strart thinking about solids at 5 months if she's not shown interest before and he's happy for us to use rice cereal or maize based corn flour to thicken her milk a little.

As for the talking small amounts .... basically said live with it!! Its just how she likes to eat and theres no point trying to force her to take more just for our convenience.

I bought her an awesome bib today, its huge! Will have to post pics! She got me a good one in the waiting room, vomit down her, me and the chair! So much for me looking like a yummy mummy!

Oh glad the appointment went well! Sounds like you are on the right track!!!

Can't wait to see the pic! hehe

Mine took 1-3oz per feed until about 4 months. Since reflux seems to improve around 5 months (or even ends for many!) from esophagus development, you should expect larger feeds around then. He started taking 6-8oz at night then (perhaps because he was sleepy as mentally they do sometimes 'fear' the bottle), and now he does 6-8oz per feed at 9 months!

We started with a tablespoon of banana puree at 4.5 months (once per day) and then went straight into BLW at 6 months :) 50% percentile is great for severe reflux!

Thanks Aliss :flow:

Yeah, she drinks more at night, some nights I even get 4oz down her!!!
I'm hoping she'll just gradually take more and more. We are very lucky as Neocate is elemental so its digested very very easily, so even though she pukes huge amount back up, it only has to be in her belly for a very short time for he to take the nutrients in.

Would you mind if I picked your brain on BLW, I really wanted to do it but the paed is encouraging starting small amounts of pureed stuff a 5 months, can I start with that and move to BLW?

Goos day today, only small amounts of vomit!!

Morning girls glad there is some good news Farie. Thats such a cute pic

Ollie's reflux seems to be worsening, hes not sick or anything but the gulping is getting more frequent and he is now gagging sometimes.

Had a word with the nurse yesterday who did his jabs and she said see the doc again in 3/5 days when his jabs have settled etc.

I might ask for a referral just to be sure its not his bowels as he was in NICU when he was born for poor feeding and no reason was really explained.

I have hours of grunting, squirming, back arching and "jerking" thats all I can explain it as. Its worse at night - I think thats because we are quiet etc.

ON a positive he is pooing now by himself have gone to Aptamil Comfort again and he seems happier but had to use some Hipp Organic last night and he loved it - has anyone used this for a reflux/colicky baby?

Sure go ahead :) We did the same with the purees and then straight to BLW. He actually preferred BLW! We weren't allowed medications due to his rapid weight gain (he is 96 percentile) so puree was the only thing we got for 'meds'. I never increased the amount - only 1tbsp of banana, 3x a day.

Last night for us was awwwwwful  :coffee:

Bed at 7:30pm, gas pains at 9pm, feed at 12am, nasty raw acidic burp & vomit, up the next 3 hours every 20 minutes (no sleep for me) with more gas pains, then back down finally at 3am with some advil (I think his throat was on fire) until 5:30am.

Zzzzzzzzzz. Don't mean to scare anyone as it's not usual for it to continue at 9.5 months but, for us, it does :(

Yup, get dioscorea 30c and give it twice a day for 3 days. It's meant to help with back arching type pains, gurgling tummy etc. Hope it works for you! It didn't seem to make a difference when I was giving it (in fact I thought she was getting worse) but the day I stopped she started improving and hasn't shown any symptoms since xx

Did you use granules or liquid?

We have just been away in Australia for 3 weeks, thought Id taken enough formula, but 2 days before coming home I needed to buy more

I bought a reflux one & it was so thick, I had to add a little extra water (didnt really feel comfortable with that though)

When I got home I thought, as she seemed fine changing milk, I would try & get her back onto aptamil first milk (rather than the comfort)

...........What a mistake, she went back to sqaure one & was obvioulsly in pain

Back on comfort now & lesson learnt....If it aint broke, dont try & fix it :winkwink:

Hi ladies

Long time no chat with you :)

I think it is time to bow out of this thread as we seem to have got through the other side. As some of you may remember from about a month ago I said Evan really seemed to be improving.

Well I started weaning him last week (19 weeks, HV said 17 but i didn't feel Evan was remotely ready) and in the past nearly 2 weeks he has not been sick once, he is one brekkie and lunch now (either babyrice, prrodge or fruit/veg puree) No hicupps, bo horrendous sickyup burps, no refusal to sleep on his back and is generally feeding really well now :)

I feel for you all as I know how AWFUL it is, I shall keep up on your progress and keep stalking (especially Fairie and Nim!!)

:hugs:

Thanks Aliss, I just have the bloody teeth to contend with now! But looking back I remember how horrible it was when Evan was 3-4 weeks old but before reflux was diagnosed and the screaming until 6am and projectile vomit at every feed and in between!! 17 weeks later we have made it :)

Aliss I really hope alex gets over his soon :hugs:

Aww thanks :hugs: Well luckily I don't know any different so at almost 10 months we're probably in the clear soon! It is farrrr better now though (despite at least 1 violent vomit per 3am but no big deal!)

Oh so happy for you AnnaMatronic!!!!!!! :happydance:

We are kind of on the other side as well! We are now weaning her off the ranitidine but even if it doesn't work she only gets like 2ml in the evening and that is all, she is happy!

We have other stuff to worry about now though, food allergies/intolerances etc! It never ends does it! :dohh:

Hi ladies, I thought I'd come here because you are the experts. My 13wk old LO has been on ranitidine since 6 weeks, and at first it seemed to work a treat. However, the last couple of weeks she has been really unsettled again, so her dose was upped. It didn't really do an awful lot, so gp prescribed her nutramigen aa last week (she is currently on aptamil pepti). My pharmacist has been unable to get hold of it up to now, and can't get it til Friday this week. Today, LO has been howling most of the day. She wants feeding every 2 hours, and has started bringing up more milk than usual. I can't console her, and she is basically screaming herself to sleep and then waking up a bit later and screaming again. It's just like the early days again  She has been really snotty and bunged up too, and I'm not sure if she has a bit of a cold, or if it's the reflux. Her temperature is quite low, she definitely doesn't have a fever. Has anyone used nutramigen aa? Did it make a difference? I don't really know if it's the reflux playing up or if there's something else wrong. Sorry for the essay...

Sorry sapphire not sure hun. Hope it goes back to normal soon.

Not sure what to do ladies last week due to a fire X and I was staying at my mothers and I wasnt able to give him the losec he did so much better only one or two big spit ups per day. Started him back on it again this week and he is puking like crazy all over the place 7+ times a day. Wondering if I should just stop the meds or is it not having the meds last week is having a toll on him this week. Not sure what to do.

Hello :)

Does this sound like silent reflux? or just normal wind? im so confused and dont know how to help my baby :(

He is breastfed and he will latch on ok at first and feed fine for a couple of mins, then suddenly pulls away and arches his back while screaming his head off, his legs stretch out and go stiff, then i cant get him to latch on again. once calmed down ill try again but the same thing keeps happening.
after the feed he has hiccups and coughs, and you can feel the trapped wind inside of him i think? but the thing is he brings up a few good big burps, but i can still feel a rumbling in his back/side. then he will bring back up a small amount of milk sometimes but not always. then after all this he just screams. we keep him upright, and he will eventually fall asleep on my shoulder just to wake up crying again either in pain or hungry??
this goes on all day, but at night he is alot better. a little bit windy but then brings up some burps and goes back to sleep.
weve tried infacol for a few days but it made no difference just his poo started getting harder so i stopped it as i dont want him having constipation.
also tried infant gaviscon since yesterday but it doesnt seem to do anything either.

also forgot to say inbetween feeds his breathing sounds funny like a strange hiccup gulping sound. im not sure how to describe it. i sometimes express my milk and feed through a bottle as he gets so stressed trying to feed from me, and when hes drinking he makes that strange sound. ive tried anti colic bottles but makes no difference.

ive thought it could be something in my diet? but ive tried cutting out caffeine and cut right down on dairy and i dont eat spicy stuff but nothing makes a difference.

Any ideas on whats going on? x

I could have written that and my lo has just been diagnoised with SR!
