Reflux Help & Support Thread

Peach Blossom I don't think its a too high dose, just on the higher end of the scale. GPs will give you the smallest dose generally, most people are on that, but in some cases, its not enough, theres like a max dose for weight too. Hope that makes sense.
Domperidone doesnt always work right away either.
Domperidone only worked a little while for us - until it actually had the opposite effect. The hospital didn't believe us til they tried it for themselves, cue sick immediatley

Well we had a neonatal check up yesterday and the guy wants to wean her off the omeprazole  I told him we've onliy been on it 2 weeks, if anything we've only just got results and it helps. And he says "I'll write to the doctor with a weaning plan"

I said "You don't understand. Without it I can't take her out. I am stuck in our house."

That obviously went in one ear and out the other. It's not like we havent tried to wean her off it ourselves, we have for months but it comes back worse than ever.

We shall see. With a newborn due next week i think he can go take a run and j

As well as the reflux she still seems hugely constipated and seems to have trapped wind after each bottle, she strains, grunts and whinges for an hour afterwards then seems okay. She still can't poo on her own either - we have to use a suppository or massage round her little bum with a cold wipe to get her to go or she just stores it up for days and it comes out a big huge hard mass and gives her terrible reflux!

Peach Blossom
- have you tried side-sleeping? I know it's not recommended but there's no way in hell I'd ever get any sleep if I tried to put Macy on her back, she's so uncomfortable and if she manages to turn over in her sleep she gets bad reflux pain and I have to go soothe her then turn her over. I have an Angelcare monitor for reassurance

xxx

We found Lili was getting very constipated because of the Gaviscon. We give her brown sugar in water if it gets really bad. The problem is that she strains and wriggles trying to have a poo then all that makes her vomit! It's a never ending cycle! Poor Macy having to have a suppository. Hope that doesn't go on too long :hugs:

I will try the side sleeping, thanks for the suggestion. We have the Angelcare monitor in her room for day sleeps and she sleeps in a co sleeper in our room at night. Only problem with the Angelcare monitor is that I forget to turn it off when I take her out of the cot, setting off the alarm and waking up OH!

Thanks for that. I was worried cos she is so small, and it seemed to be making her worse! I'm waiting for the consultant to call me back to confirm the dose and for now have her on the lower dose just in case. I think the higher dose was making it worse anyway! Vomit central for the last couple of days!

Why do they want to take your LO off of the Omeprazole if its working? That doesn't make sense!

Stardust can I ask what milk is she on? Could it be that it is an allergy or intolerance that is causing her constipation? That was our case!

That's a point Happyface, I was told to go dairy free and stop giving her the formula top up which seems to have helped with the constipation somewhat.

peach blossom - she's not on gaviscon anymore, just omeprazole but i don't think that should constipate her :-S she won't take brown sugar in water or juice although when she was little she did and it helped the constipation a lot!!

happyface -

she's on SMA Gold.

we were on neocate for over 2 months to see if it would help but it didn't make any difference at all and she was started on lactulose and suppositories while on neocate as the constipation was so bad she bled! she's almost doubled her milk intake since coming off neocate so i don't think an allergy is our problem.

not sure what else i can do, the dietitian and paediatrician really can't understand it, i think maybe because he milk intake is still quite low (although much improved from earlier) but she won't take any juice or water! prunes seem to work well so i think i'm going to buy a tin of prunes and puree them and give an ice cube after each meal

don't want to syringe water/juice as she already has a feeding/oral aversion and cries when anything goes near it, don't want to make it worse!! xx

I see. I would recommend putting 1 less scoop of powder in her bottle but if she is not having enough milk then I guess this is not an option. Prunes did wonders for us as well. If not I guess you will have to be patient until she starts on solids as then you can help her with the right diet.

Can you put a bit of prune juice in her milk? Or wouldn't she fall for that?!

Crap night and she's suddenly started vomiting a lot in yet sleep  she was awake every hour and really unhappy. Cos she's chucking so much up she hungry lots but eating more = more vomit.

Arggguh I really thought the erythromycin was working

I'm knackered today - it really feels like we are getting no better at all.

That's what we did actually. I used to buy dried prunes and boil them. Then I used 30ml of that water when I made her milk.

Aww girls I really feel for you with lo who are sick I hope LO's are ok.

Ollie has settled down slightly the wind issue seems to have settled now (thank god) he is very snuffly at the mo, which isnt helping his reflux, he had a terrible bout today after his hiccups each hiccup followed through, just a tiny bit but the regurgitation bit he didnt like !

On a positive I got 7 hours continuous sleep last night 8.30 till 3.30am - put some gripe water in his last feed and he had Hipp Organic at night which he seems to like. I have also used half a sachet of gaviscon as well and luckily he poo'd by himself.

I cant wait for solids !!!!

god knows, he reckons its a high dose (granted) and shes been medicated for too long. We've tried several times giving it up-no joy. The guys an idiot! Preemies can have reflux for months, beyond 1 year!

After consulting with my HV today, I am thinking of trying my Daughter on baby rice at luchtime! (She has silent reflux)

What ages did your LO's start? Or what age are you planning on starting?

Nim gets a tiny bit in her bottles but isn't ready for it by spoon yet, to much even in the bottles upsets her, same with the pear, a tiny bit am & pm with her Losec she tolerates bit more and she gets even more sicky.
She doesn't look for the spoon at all and has little interest at the moment (she used to chug it down with her Losec)

We will keep trying as she gets to 4.5 months and her paed wants it introduced by 5 months if she's not already wanting it.

Due to the severity of her reflux and sicking he's concerned she could developed oral aversions and won't 'seek' food normally.

Farie we were always concerned about that and for a while it was the case, but with age, ermmmmm....nothing passes her eyes

My Mum told me that she had me on baby rice at 6 weeks!! Think that was because I refused to bf and wouldn't take a bottle though! Kelly, if the HV thinks it's ok to start on baby rice then I'm sure it's ok. Try introducing it slowly maybe so just a tiny bit today and then a little more tomorrow and so on. Let me know how you get on!

Macy was weaned at 12 weeks under the paediatrician and a dietitian. I don't think it was their first choice but I refused to allow them to feed her via an NG tube and they gave me a chance to see if she could put on weight with calories from solids. She's taken to solids really well but it's definitely not a miracle cure, I don't know if it's made the reflux any better xx

Stardust, was Macy losing weight? Is that why they wanted to do the ng tube? Poor thing, glad they let you out her on solids instead!

Xavier has been on rice since he was 3 months old. Dr had us add it to the bottle it does help make him feel fuller and keep it down more. I only give it to him like every 3rd bottle and I can tell a difference in how he throws up more without the rice. We have started spoon feeding (dr advice) for over a week and he is doing really well spits alot out but is getting better at it each day.
