Reflux Help & Support Thread

Ness, hope the Dr can help :flow:
Someoldgirl - Ranitadene didn't work for us, you might need either a higher dose or diffent H2 inhibitor. Domperidone can in occasional circumstances make puking worse (I think sb22's Alex was one?)
Babyno9 - we have awful wheezing/coughing/hiccups - your paed should be able to advise, personally I have no confidence in Gaviscon, I have found that H2 inhibitors are a lot more effective
Stardust :hugs: if I was you I'd pop her back up to 15mg daily tbh, if it works stick to it! Nims still on 20mg daily and there is no way I can reduce it :sad1:

As for us, well I thought the erythromycin was helping but we have had some awful puking this weekend  shes been bringing up all her puree, losec and milk up to 3h after earing.

It didn't help that I ran out of Losec and shes had to have omeprazol since Friday and the screaming and unhappiness have started again. Thank god a friend has given me some Losec so we are back on that! The pharmacy is open tomorrow so I'll grab her prescription and some pro-biotics.
I'm really hoping it was just using the generic omeprazol that's caused the issues and in a few days it will settle down, it's awful when shes in pain as her drinking just dies on its arse. Today she had
4oz at 3am,
1oz at 7am,
2oz at 10 am,
3oz at 12.30,
2oz at 3.30 and
4oz at 6pm

She's down for the night now and I'll dreamfeed at 10.30pm

Arghh I hate this so much
If the vomiting is still bad by Thurs its back to the paed.

Have you tried carobel Farie??? What an awful time honey, we've been persevering with gaviscon but she's been screaming through feeds and only taking 3-4oz so gone back to the carobel and she's taking more xx

So sorry to read this Farie :hugs: Hugs to you & your LO :hugs:

My Daughter has been suffering badly again this past week... It really is so hard

She started early weaning in the hope it would help, but doesnt seem too :nope:

Although she is enjoying her food, so thats lovely to see

carobel worked wonderfully for me, especially in neocate... seems my lo took more when carobel was added...

Just contacted an osteopath ~ To book my Daughter in for cranial osteopathy

Gotta be worth a try :flower:

ooh let us know if it works Kelly I've heard it works wonders!

Ness/Peachy - how thick does it make it? Nim cant cope with anything to gloopy (thickening it with rice cereal didnt help as it caused a sort of SR effect iykwim?)
We cant actually get Carobel out here, but Karicare make a thickener which I think is similar?

Did you have to change teats? Shes on med flow at the mo and seems happy with it, to fast and she drowns! Would she need x teats or just the MAM fast flow?

Awful day yesterday and the day before, but we seem better today, I think the Losecs kicking in now as she seems in less pain after feeds, although shes still only taking tiny quantities, 2oz is a 'normal day feed again :dohh:
God I hate this :sad1:

My Daughters silent reflux, has worsened & she now sicks up too (thankfully not alot, but she wasnt sicky before)

I didnt realise how good I had it with my Boys, as they didnt suffer with reflux..This is the hardest thing

well the carobel continues to thicken for up to 15 minutes, at the moment I add 1.5 scoops per 7oz but you can tailor it to your LO. I use variable avent teats but MAM do an x teat and I'd recommend that honey xx

:hugs: Ava's isnt getting better either and now got constipation, excessive wind and sicking up to add to it off back to the docs this afternoon xx

So we're back to arching of the back, screaming and refusing more than an ounce or two. She's mega struggling to poo and has excessive wind and tummyache, could this be the SMA she's been on for a couple of weeks or the fact we've started weaning? Less constipation with C&G and infant gaviscon?

My Daughter has cranial osteopathy on Tuesday, really praying it helps her...:flower: Im also gonna get advice on homeopathic remidies too

Ness...Hugs to you & Ava :hugs:

I asked my health visitor today about trying Meadow on sma staydown, she said it can cause constipation, so may be that....As you have started weaning, its a good time to give her fruits that aid with pooping! I hear banana & pears are good

Ness & Kelly

Arghhhhh we are still only drinking 1-2oz at the mo too, and have awful wind. I have started Nim on probiotics which the pharmacist said should help.
Ness - will try the thickener I think :flow: bit of a bugger about the teats, MAM are a nightmare to get out here and MIL has just bought and sent 3x fast flow packs from the UK!
Will experiment and see what I can get away with - I think she might cry if I call and ask for x-cut right now

Right, off to tear up carpet and remove our old kitchen!

Kelly, hows your LO? Did the CO help at all? So sorry shes puking now, although you might find it eases the pain a tiny bit, in many cases SR is actually worse than the usual vomiting reflux as at least with vomit the acid is up and out!
Ness, any better with Ava?

We are a little better now, the Losec is kicking in and the pain seems to have eased. We are now giving the Erythromycin by syringe in the middle of or just after a feed and the vomiting seems much better.
I also started her on Probiotics to try to balance her little tummy. Seems to be helping so far and shes passing wind very easily (its hilarious!)

As soon as the new teats arrive I think I'll try thicken the Neocate a little, even just to try and encourage her to take more .... currently we are still excited if she tales 3oz :dohh:

So glad Nim is doing a bit better! xx

Ava is ok, had a really rough day yesterday she kept screaming in pain and trying to stretch out almost like when she was 'sat' bent at the waist it was hurting her.

She seems to be fine when we lay her down but she does seem to swallow constantly bless her.

gave her some calpol, dont know if it helped or if it was the right thing to do but desperate measures lol, helped a little anyway but she was farting absolutely loads once her crying had stopped xx

Thanks :hugs: Thats a positive way to look at it ~ I needed that :hugs:

She has cranial osteopathy on Tuesday ~ Will defo let you all know how it goes

Glad Nim is doing better ~ Long may it continue  FX

Hi everyone, haven't posted in here before but am after a bit of advice, hope you don't mind.

Ryan has been treated for reflux for about a month now. He was vomiting multiple times after feeds, getting hiccups and generally showing signs of discomfort after a bottle. The doctor started him on gaviscon and the difference was amazing- hardly any sickness, no hiccups and none of the gulping/ grimacing and fussing. He is currently on 2 sachets in each of his daytime feeds (4 x a day) and has never been affected with his bedtime or nightime bottles.

Over the last 4 or 5 days feeding time has become such a battle. We feed on demand, usually every 3 or 4 hrs in the day with 1 (occasionally none) nightime bottles. He shows signs of hunger and gets excited at the sight of his bottle and we can't seem to get it in his mouth quick enough! He will take 3 or 4 sucks then start whinging and push the bottle away. Then he cries because he wants it back but will repeat the few sucks the fussing and pushing it away. Eventually he will seem to settle (although still noisier than usual) and take a few ounces but will then start pushing the bottle away again. Since doing this the sickness and hiccups have returned and he generally seems more upset than usual after a feed.
We haven't changed milk or the temp we serve it at, he was changed onto the next size teat up a few weeks ago and had been fine on them but to be sure we tried him back on the slower flow ones but he was the same.
Could this be reflux related or have the symptoms come back just because he does so much squirming around?
Sorry for the long post but feed times are becoming so upsetting as I don't know what to do to make things easier for him

missVN it does sound like reflux related to me, I would also make sure that the flow isn't too slow as the Gaviscon can make the milk really thick and hard to get through the teat. It might be worth trying SMA Staydown instead of Gaviscon to see if it helps?

Sorry you're having a tough time, are you doing all the usual stuff like propping up his sleeping area, his changing mat etc. and keeping him completely upright for 30mins after a feed. Keep him as upright as you can during a feed and if it helps him put some music on and stand up and gently rock him, sing to him etc. anything to keep him calm As soon as he starts to fuss take the bottle away and gently rub his back and wait until he's settled before offering it again.

He might do better with more frequent feeds - every 2-3hours instead of 3-4, the reflux might not bother him so much with smaller feeds?
Hope it gets better soon

xx

To everyone else - sorry I haven't been on much, I'm coming back to read through and catch up with everyone later xx

hows the SMA staydown with constipation?? Gaviscon isnt really doing much for Ava!
