Reflux Help & Support Thread

Cranial osteopathy tommorow ~ Please keep your FX that it helps my little Girl :hugs:

missVN it does sound like reflux related to me, I would also make sure that the flow isn't too slow as the Gaviscon can make the milk really thick and hard to get through the teat. It might be worth trying SMA Staydown instead of Gaviscon to see if it helps?

Sorry you're having a tough time, are you doing all the usual stuff like propping up his sleeping area, his changing mat etc. and keeping him completely upright for 30mins after a feed. Keep him as upright as you can during a feed and if it helps him put some music on and stand up and gently rock him, sing to him etc. anything to keep him calm As soon as he starts to fuss take the bottle away and gently rub his back and wait until he's settled before offering it again.

He might do better with more frequent feeds - every 2-3hours instead of 3-4, the reflux might not bother him so much with smaller feeds?
Hope it gets better soon

xx

To everyone else - sorry I haven't been on much, I'm coming back to read through and catch up with everyone later xx

Thank you for your reply, will have a chat with the nurse today. Annoyingly I can see my hv until Monday. I'm thinking it may be teething tho, we've been giving him calpol & teething gel and he's been much better.
The gaviscon has always worked really well- can it stop working?
We do try all the tricks but now he's 4 mths its almost impossible to keep him still for 30 mins after a feed!

from what I've read its common for the gaviscon to stop working - maybe try adding two sachets instead?

Ava is horrendously constipated though, I've gone back to carobel - she's been screaming in agony, day 3 of lactulose and still no runny poo just rock hard lumps! Poor baby xx

Well, back from the cranial osteopathy treatment for my Daughter :baby:

Its too early to say if it helped at all...Although as we were leaving, she spat up! :dohh:

Must be honest, for £40 she didnt really 'treat' her for long at all ~ which shocked me a bit!....She said I should go at least 3 times & space them only a week apart

I would pay whatever it takes to help my LO ~ But with this, I have no idea if it will help?

Hmmm, I did read some good stuff about it online but I've never had the money to do it!!! Apparently it makes them worse on the first day/night and then they start to improve :-S

Hope it works for you hun xx

Well, she has been in a really deep sleep for the past 1.5 hours! Just waking now

Wow - does she normally have a nice deep sleep in the afternoon???

I wish we could give it a shot but just don't have the money!

How was she overnight?

No, she only normally naps for a maximum of half an hour!

She woke twice in the night, but that probably is due to the fact we only noved her into a cot 2 days ago & she keeps 'jumping' from all the space, she usually likes being secure :hugs:

Will let you know how she gets on today :flower:

Im sure I read a link on here once, where you could get it done pretty cheaply....Anyone remember that?

Kelly, really hope its helping Meadow :hugs:
Ness, hows Ava, is the carobel helping?
Stardust, hows Macy?

I've tried Nim on thickener today but its made her power chucking 20x worse?!? Poor lamb has had a really bad day with the vomiting. Other than that she good tho, the Losecs really kicked back in so at least shes a happy chucker! Just a shame for my washing pile!

Hello ladies...Ive managed to read the first 16 pages looking for similar cases as my LO, howver im a bit sleep deprived so i decided to post instead.
My baby girl was diagnosed with a cow milk allergy and severe reflux when she was 1 month old (she is now 3months) and after changing to special formula and zantac she was much better. On average she would projectile vomit about 4-5 times a day but she was never in pain and has excellent weight gain. These past 2 days shes been puking almost 20 times a day and she seems to be in pain...She squirms alot when put to bed and shes crying alot more than usual. Basically im wondering if 1.5 months down the line if reflux can suddenly take such a bad turn...Will it calm down on its own again???? Im in between docs at the moment as im fed up with them brushing everything off so i could really use some advice..

Vicky, sounds ike she needs her dose reevaluated? The effectivness Of Ranitadene is linked to weigh so dose varies as they grow iykwim?

Reflux can get worse as they get old a they take more each meal, generally tho it should stay pretty undercontrol once the right milk and meds are sorted.

I'd go back to the dr and demand a med evaluation. And the possibility of something like Losec.

Thanks farie..I was also thinking about asking for Losec after reading some posts here. I increase her zantac dose according to her weight but i guess its not enough. Maybe i should give it a few more days before going back to the doc? Is there such a thing as a flare up of reflux?

It can and does flare up, but TBH the meds should really be on top of it so that a flare up is more increased spilling not pain iykwim?

Personally I would push for Losec, IMHO its the best way to treat GERD in babies to leave them pain free.
If you can insist on Losec (pink capsule) rather than the generic omeprazol (blue and yellow cap) as its so much better, for us generic just doesn't cut it, even at 20mg a day!

Youre right... I booked an apointment with a new doc for next week. Lets hope he doesnt brush me off. Thanks alot!

Well, cranial osteopathy hasnt done a thing, mayby you need more treatments, but for £40 I would have expected a small improvement?

Been back to the Doctors today & she has been taken off ranintidine & put on domperidone & lansoprazole ~ Anyone have experience of these?

Im just about to start researching them :coffee:

Oh hon, so sorry there hasnt been any change at all :hugs:

Lansoprazole is almost the same as Omeprazol (losec) and works in the same way, its an H2 inhibitor that blocks the acid production pump and lowers the level of acid in the tummy (similar to ranitadene but works on a different area)

Domperidone helps the tummy empty faster but can in some cases cause cramps (Nim doesn't tolerate it at all well) but im many babies is a real help. In rare cases it can actually make the vomiting worse (I think sb22's Alex is one?)

Hi girls,

the carobel or gaviscon isnt helping much really, she isnt screaming during feeding any more but she arches her back and wont take more than a few ounce without us persevering. Too much carobel makes it so thick and gloopy.

I've been reading a book called "Colic Solved" on recommendation of a lady on the Little Refluxers website - its fab, basically says colic doesnt actually exist and reflux or silent reflux is usually the course, and included sometimes CMPI.

Kelly have you asked for a hypoallergenic formula to try alongside the meds? I would as it might be aggravating her reflux

I'm going back to ask for something else for the reflux cos gaviscon is shite - excuse my language but unless she has 2 sachets per bottle it doesnt help and it constipates her to hell so we've got a screaming baby either way!

She's crying out a lot in her sleep and whimpering too, elevated her mattress last night which helped a little bit xx

Aww Ness so sorry honey :hugs: thickeners do nothing at all for us.

I think you need to just go into the Dr and demand Losec, tell them you have done your research and know that a pump inhibitor is the best and most effective way to treat GERD, that side effects are almost unheard of and waiting for a baby to stop gaining weight etc is not acceptable.
The physiological effects of ongoing and continued pain can be awful and can inhibit development and leave long term oral and food related issues.

If you need to print out some of the info from little refluxers, crying over split milk and infant reflux web sites

Huge big :hugs:

When is the best time to give the lansoprazole? It says 30-60 minutes before food, but its only once a day, so I cant give it first thing in the morning
