Reflux Help & Support Thread

Lol Ava is gaining weight fine she's above average but she has silent reflux and she's what you call a 'grey area' baby, seems fine, gaining weight, sleeping well, but feeding is horrendous and screaming in pain etc...

Took Ava back to the docs today, she's prescribed ranitidine 0.5ml twice a day to start and she said I can increase to 0.5ml 3 times a day if needed. She's referring Ava to a paed too - FINALLY gettting somewher!!

Ness, Im so pleased for you & Ava  I really hope the ranintidine helps :hugs: It did help my LO for some time:baby: (Only recently stopped helping)

Kelly thats brilliant so happy for you!! Did the doc tell you to increase ranitidine dose as sh put on weight? Anyone know the weight versus mils ratio? Xx

Ness :yipee: So so pleased they have prescribed you ranitadene!! Awesome news
Kelly, also :yipee: for the domperidone working, thats wonderful.

Stardust, I know what you mean about the reflux threads, I think some people don't realise that happy chucking really isn't anything to worry about :hugs:

As for us :headbang: yeah, same old same old, not quite so much vomit today, slept ok (ish) only up 2x in the night. Dr thinks she might have rotavirus or a bug
Only drinking 2-3oz at a time tho, cannot see pead for about 3 weeks, which is ok as we are off to Q'town on Thurs and the idea of trying to get her into her car seat, do 1h to town for 9am, see the paed and then do a 8h car journey was not appealing! Particularly if its just a bug that made the chucking 100x worse in the last 72h

If needs be we can see a paed down there.

Just to let u ladies know Aaira has still been bf and neocate occasionally as I think it helps alot when she's in pain, strange I know!!! We have been on renidetine since 6 weeks and domperdone... Week ago I cut down all her medication as I'm not comfy with the idea... But realised she needs renidetine as poor girl was in pain at feeding time!! Just a quick q ladies she's been having really mucousy poos and green ones, also she is always bunged up at night... Can she really hav an intolerance as I still can't come around the idea... I do have a pead appointment next week don't know wat to expect.. Was refered as my dr saw my lo be so uncomfy at feed time!!I'm thinking is pead appointment a waste? I mean what else can they do???

From the sounds of the poo yes it could be an intolerance so don't think the appointment is a waste of time. Also for the Neocate helping, our paed mentioned that it helps the gut heal in a way so it does indeed help!

Good luck with the appointment!

Yeah defo sounds like an intolerance peachypoo!!

Farie I hope Nim gets rid of the bug soon, poor baby cant be fun at all :(

Aww, Farie, hope Nim gets better soon, poor little bubba :hugs: AS if she doesnt have enough going on

Thanks Ness,

Yeah, I did have to increase the ranintidine, but even after we incresed it with her weight, it wasnt helping...:nope:

But dont worry if this happens to Ava, there are other meds & my LO is proof that they can work wonders

hi there, have a look here for dosages:
https://www.refluxrebels.com/Acid_reflux/Acid_reflux_medication.html

my dd sufers terrible silent reflux and my advice is to keep on top of the paeds / docs - dont accept tiny increases in the doses that come nowhere near the amounts she could be taking. Ask about a 'step down' approach where lo starts on the max dose (this will give a baseline for how much she can improve), then step down the meds until your getting the maximum effect from a lower dose.

i hope the ranitidine works for you, but it doesn't work for all babies, and others become resistant to it's effects quite quickly. If your babies still in pain you should be moved onto a drug called 'omeprazole' as soon as possible. It's much more effective at reducing acid and will stop it causing further damage to her esophagus and stomach lining.

this book about reflux (i bought it on Amazon) is really fab: 'colic solved' by dr bryan verb....(?), and theres loads of reviews written by parents whose kids suffer reflux.

a good overall website is:
www.infantrefluxdisease.com

good luck x
ps reflux babies rely on us parents to advocate for them - dont let them suffer!

agree with the others - mucousy green poo is a BIG sign of CMPI (cows milk protien intolerence). I was mega skeptical and never expected it to work, but removing all dairy/ dairy derivatives from my diet has made a HUGE difference. Also, bear in mind that up to half of all babies with CMPI also react to 'soya'!!

If you want to cut dairy from your diet have a look at www.kellymom.com - it includes a list of ingredients to avoid that you can print out and keep in your purse (credit card size), which is pretty handy.

.... meant to say... initially i was also really wary of givin any meds, (I didnt even like using calpol), but look at it this way: would you take painkillers if you had really bad toothache?? I now hold the view that, where reflux is concerned, anything that helps ease the pain my Lo suffers is completely fine by me!

I always research meds myself too and ask about any concerns i have.

Does anyone else have the lansoprazole in dissolvable (in the mouth) tablet form? If so, how do you find them?

Thanks honey! I bought that book its brilliant just wish I'd known about it sooner!

Doc tried to get liquid omep for her but we needed something right away and the chemist didnt have any omep in. Thanks for the link too - getting her weighed on Monday so will adjust the dose myself - shes on 0.5ml 3x a day but shes a big baby so think the dose is too low personally xxx

It says on the chart 2.3-4.5ml divided to 3x per day- currently she's on 1.5 so if I increased to 0.8ml 3x daily she'd be on 2.4 do you think that'd be ok? I think she's around 17lb mark now or just under x

Well, im worried that the great days are gone

My Daughter seemed very unsettled yesterday afternoon & again this morning

Aww hon :hugs: Is she still on the ranitadene and domperidone? May be her doses need adjusting? Big hugs for you.

We've been up and down the last few days, today she puked and it all come out her nose, poor lamb was inconsolable for about 10 mins afterwards.

We are off on holiday to Queenstown tomorrow for 11 days but when we get back im heading back to the paed to see if she can try ElaCare, I just cannot cope with her only drinking 2-3oz at a time and often less than that :dohh: She just never seems settled with her grub. And flatly refuses to even try solids at the mo.
Going to try MAM sz3 teats tomorrow/over the weekend to see if a fast flow helps her at all.

Spoke to the Doctor & she said I need to give it at least a week ~ Mmm, not convinced its gonna work...Had 2 sick episodes today

She isnt on ranintidine anymore, just the 2 new medicines

Hope you have a lovely holiday Farie :flower:

Hi Ness

Dont get the omep in liquid form - read lots of places that it deteriorates really quickly (7-14 days) and becomes much less effective. You want to get it as 'Losec Mups': these are tablets that you dissolve - it's fiddly n bit of a pain to do, but releases immediately and is the most effective way to take it. Try to give it on an empty tummy early in the day (at least 2hrs after food), then try to wait 20mins-45mins b4 giving nxt feed. It needs an acid environment to work so mixin with apple puree is a popular way of doing it (dont mix with milk). Also, give it at least 2hrs away (either side) if ur still using ranitidine as this will make it less effective - dont stop the ranitidine for about 10days as omep takes a little while to build up and become effective: you dont want to leave LO with no 'cover' meantime.

Soph is around 14lbs jst now and on the followin meds, jst to give you an idea of the dosages we use:

20mg (2 tablets) LOSEC: 1x daily
2.7ml DOMPERIDONE: 4x daily

plus:
0.3ml ABIDEC (multivit liq) 1x daily

plus:
She also has CMPI (cows milk protien intolerance) so I'm on a dairy free diet which made a HUGE difference (despite me being relly skeptical), and waitin on prescription for Neutramigan(spelling?) formula that i can use to mix her solids

My paed has now "run out of ideas" and refered us to Yorkhill Childrens Hospital as he's not prepared to increase the losec dose further, but I can see all the same signs that have happened b4 when her weight has increased and shes needed a higher dose!!

fingers crossed 4u - keep postin x

Hi Kelly - thx for ur comments

Think Lansoprazole isn't so good for babies because they are 'delayed release' - babies tummys empty much more quickly than adults, so they're not as effective as the 'immediate release'. Is it Losec MUPS ur using jst now? If so, how old is ur baby? Ru havin problems givin her the meds? If so I can offer you some different options I've tried that might work for you... x

Take back the info on LANSOPRAZOLE - had been thinkin of the capsules you open up - my mistake, so sorry!!

Hello ladies hope u all are well. Still struggling with the reflux. Some days good other days not so good but we are up to the 25th percent for weight so something is working. Dr told me I could strart giving more solids been on cereal since 3 months hopin that starts to help. Have the hardest time getting LO to keep the med (omep) in his mouth he hates it so much and spits so much out. Anyone have any advise on how to get him to swallow it.

Thankyou so much for your offer of help, I really appreciate it :flower:

My Daughter is 5 months old ~ I was worried about giving her the dissolvable tablets, for risk of choking, but the doctor suggested i break them into 1/4's & give it to her that way, which is much better

Ive just realised I have been giving my Daughter 0.4mls of Domperidone 3 times a day, when on the label it says 4mls 3 times a day! :dohh: That seems an awful lot?

So, to make it clearer & let me know what you think, pretty please :hugs: Im all in a muddle, as to if to give her these full doses?

She has:

1 X (strength 15mg) lansoprazole orodispers tabs once a day

4ml domperidone (strength 1mg per ml) X 3 times a day
