Reflux Help & Support Thread

Sarah I found that the ranitidine caused Ava bad constipation and she seemed to be getting worse but when I stopped the meds she pooped normally and has been fine with her reflux luckily I think she's growing out of it. But try a little prune juice diluted with cooled boiled water just to see if it is her poo thats giving her issues xx

Gosh, this thread has been busy!!

Farie - glad to hear Nim is doing better on the Elecare, let's hope it keeps up. I'm not surprised that the paed said Nim's reflux was the worst case he'd ever seen - the paediatricians on the children's ward that Macy sees said hers was one of the worst cases they'd seen and it was the highest dose of Omeprazole they'd ever had to prescribe (although it's a pretty small hospital). Poor Nim seems to have it worse :-( I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Nim keeps slowly but surely improving!

Peachypoo - I think Farie covered everything but I just wanted to say Macy has always been worse in the evening too, I give her all her Omeprazole (was 20mg but just gotten down to 10mg!!!) in the evening as it seems to help her through the worst period. Hope it works for you quickly.

Sarah - can you ask the GP for Losec(omeprazole) instead if the Ranitidine isn't working?? Any other reasons she could still be uncomfortable - wind, overtiredness, constipation etc. Sometimes we get so focused on the reflux it's easy to forget that other stuff can affect them too.

SilasLove - Macy always had terrible thrush, she was constantly being treated and nothing cleared it. I found she was worse when reflux unmedicated though - I think the acid was constantly burning and irritating her throat and tongue causing thrush. Nystatin always worked better than Daktarin for us after every feed and once it's gone a maintenance dose once a day and we used thrush cream in her nappy after every bath to keep it away too. It cleared up when she went onto solids and just flares up now and again. It's such a shame as thrush can add to the discomfort when feeding and make life much harder :-(

Ness - Macy has always been constipated, it's still awful, she strains all day, going purple and screaming and only little hard bits come out. We managed it with lactulose which helped loads (around 4-5ml three times a day) but I just took her off it and it's come back with a vengeance. I was speaking to the DR today and he reckoned that reflux meds always cause constipation as "once you fix things at one end it causes problems at the other". I've tried everything else, prune juice, less scoops of milk, drinks of water, prunes, peaches, pears etc. but nothing works. When things are really bad I use a glycerin suppository. If you find anything that helps let me know.

fluffyblue - solids really helped Macy but if it's making things worse for Ollie I would stop just now and try again in 4weeks, was the reflux fully under control before introducing solids??

MrsH - It's hard to tell whether they are growing out of it or just fully under control via medication. Wait until LO is showing no signs of pain or discomfort at all for at least a month and then reduce the medication by a tiny bit and wait another month for things to settle before doing it again.

Update on Macy -

Reflux is 100% fully under control, we hardly ever have a flare-up and she's quite a little milk guzzler now, 3 x 7oz bottles a day plus a dreamfeed! I remember she used to be so frightened of her bottles - she would scream at the site of them and every feed used to make me sob as I couldn't bear to see her so hungry but in so much pain at the same time. Now I show her the bottle and she gets so excited and squeals and tries to grab it off me and attempt to feed herself! She screams if I stop to wind her as she's so impatient to get it back lol! And I was so worried it would cause her feeding issues for life!! Light at the end of the tunnel ladies - if you look through my old threads you'll see how bad things were for us and look where we are now.

And doing great on solids.

I've been reducing the Omeprazole and we are now down to just 10mg - fantastic!!! It tends to flare up a little each time I reduce the Omeprazole but she seems to adjust after a week or two. Going to carry on reducing by 1mg every 3-4weeks and hopefully around the time she's 1 we'll be meds free.

Still horrendously constipated though, I don't know why. The poor little lamb is in pain all day with constipation. I had taken her off Lactulose and she was doing so well but for the past weeks things have been so bad again, going to go get more tomorrow. Like I said above to someone we've tried everything but it just isn't getting better (infact the older she gets the worse it's getting). Doesn't help that she'll hardly drink any water or juice!

Hugs and "reflux healing dust" to everyone. xx

Glad to hear that Macy has improved and sooo glad to see that you are reaching 'the end' at just over 6 months, rather than later!!! :)

We had a projectile vomit this morning but it caused him no pain, other than that, I think we're close to being in the clear.

hi i put post in baby club bit just now can this happen with reflux?. can a baby gasp for air as if they got wind or airway blocked then i pick baby up and she fine ?

Mandy, yup, the often gasp, get hiccups and have wheezy breathing

Stardust - We stopped Maddy's meds and now the acid is back. :( We haven't been to the doctor yet again, but OH was adament we stop the meds. She hasn't started being really fussy again - so its ok for now. But when she has a bad day? :(:(

Oh dear! I'm back! :nope: I do often stop by and read on how you are doing but I was hoping I wouldn't have to post again for advice! :dohh:

We stopped giving ranitidine to Katerina 1 month ago. She had just started taking antihistamines for her intestinal allergies and was doing great for 1 week before we cut it. Then 3-4 days later she started being in terrible pain mostly after her feed before bed (its the only time she has milk, plus 1 at night). It crossed my mind that it might be reflux but thought she hasn't been sick so its probably her intestinal issues.. Well... she still seems to be suffering and arching her back after her feed and most times when she has solids too. She only been sick 3 times though..

Do you ladies think her silent reflux is back? It is so hard to tell when she has so many issues going on, you would think that I would know by now! :dohh:

She complains mostly after her bottle, and then very early in the morning again after her feed. . . she keeps waking up.. We started giving her ranitidine again 2 days ago.. she has slept only slightly better. It could be a coincidence though.

she dont get wheexing but she does grasp for breath and seem bunged up but not all time she has good days and bad xx

A little update from us

Not a lot to tell you all really, still heavily medicated for the reflux, still chucking daily, solids make no difference but she is starting to enjoy them a little more :happydance: she loves baby mummums (rice crackers) and rice cakes!

We have the issue that she is barely drinking during the day, literally 6-8oz, she'll take 20oz over night. Really hoping it settles down ASAP

Back to the paed in a couple of weeks, just to chat about the weaning and see if there is anything we can do to help the solids stay down. She really hates it when they come back up!

Which type of formula are people using?

I am using aptamil comfort but thinking of changing.

My Daughter has been having aptamil comfort too :baby: Why are you thinking of changing?

I went through thinking of changing too ~ As wasnt sure it was even helping, then I did & it made her worse, so went straight back on it

My daughter is always very sick after a feed, just wondered if another formula would be better, maybe sma staydown, but have heard babies can get constipated with that.

A change in milk can definitely be your answer but it might be that she also needs some medication for reflux. Also, it could be that she is allergic or intolerant to the milk and this is why she is being sick so it might be worth discussing a hypoallergenic formula with your doctor. Any other symptoms? :hugs:

Just wanted to say for anyone suffering from Reflux we went to see a nutritionist the other day for Katerina as she has multiple food intolerances and the lade suggested slippery elm powder for reflux. She said she is positive we can use that instead of ranitidine. Now Katerina's reflux is not that bad any more so I'm hoping it will work.

Just wanted to share in case anyone wants to give it a try. I will let you know how we get on! :flower:

Thankyou for this tip ~ Am googling all about it now :coffee:

Please do let us know how your LO gets on :hugs:

Of course I will! I've ordered it and should have it by Wednesday. I've read good stuff about it. I guess its worth a try anyway. Got nothing to lose. Katerina is on so many meds at the moment, it would be great if we could cut 1 down!

This thread is so quiet now ~ Hopefully a good sign

My Daughter is only on lansoprazole now & seems to be doing much better, still can only feed her in her bouncer chair, she wont be held :nope:

Just wondering those LO's that are around 6-7month mark, how many ounces are they on a day & how many meals (food)?

With a reflux baby its so different to compare with LO's that dont have reflux :baby:

Katerina had 2 meals at that mark as I was trying to cut down the milk to avoid reflux issues. She never had any problems with solids. I think if I remember correctly she was having 3 bottles per day of about 6 ounces each.

I think its difficult to compare babies even if they don'y have reflux! hehe The best way of comparison is with your baby and her previous habits! I'd say if she is putting weight nicely then there is nothing to worry about!
