Gosh, this thread has been busy!!
Farie - glad to hear Nim is doing better on the Elecare, let's hope it keeps up. I'm not surprised that the paed said Nim's reflux was the worst case he'd ever seen - the paediatricians on the children's ward that Macy sees said hers was one of the worst cases they'd seen and it was the highest dose of Omeprazole they'd ever had to prescribe (although it's a pretty small hospital). Poor Nim seems to have it worse
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Nim keeps slowly but surely improving!
Peachypoo - I think Farie covered everything but I just wanted to say Macy has always been worse in the evening too, I give her all her Omeprazole (was 20mg but just gotten down to 10mg!!!) in the evening as it seems to help her through the worst period. Hope it works for you quickly.
Sarah - can you ask the GP for Losec(omeprazole) instead if the Ranitidine isn't working?? Any other reasons she could still be uncomfortable - wind, overtiredness, constipation etc. Sometimes we get so focused on the reflux it's easy to forget that other stuff can affect them too.
SilasLove - Macy always had terrible thrush, she was constantly being treated and nothing cleared it. I found she was worse when reflux unmedicated though - I think the acid was constantly burning and irritating her throat and tongue causing thrush. Nystatin always worked better than Daktarin for us after every feed and once it's gone a maintenance dose once a day and we used thrush cream in her nappy after every bath to keep it away too. It cleared up when she went onto solids and just flares up now and again. It's such a shame as thrush can add to the discomfort when feeding and make life much harder
Ness - Macy has always been constipated, it's still awful, she strains all day, going purple and screaming and only little hard bits come out. We managed it with lactulose which helped loads (around 4-5ml three times a day) but I just took her off it and it's come back with a vengeance. I was speaking to the DR today and he reckoned that reflux meds always cause constipation as "once you fix things at one end it causes problems at the other". I've tried everything else, prune juice, less scoops of milk, drinks of water, prunes, peaches, pears etc. but nothing works. When things are really bad I use a glycerin suppository. If you find anything that helps let me know.
fluffyblue - solids really helped Macy but if it's making things worse for Ollie I would stop just now and try again in 4weeks, was the reflux fully under control before introducing solids??
MrsH - It's hard to tell whether they are growing out of it or just fully under control via medication. Wait until LO is showing no signs of pain or discomfort at all for at least a month and then reduce the medication by a tiny bit and wait another month for things to settle before doing it again.
Update on Macy -
Reflux is 100% fully under control, we hardly ever have a flare-up and she's quite a little milk guzzler now, 3 x 7oz bottles a day plus a dreamfeed! I remember she used to be so frightened of her bottles - she would scream at the site of them and every feed used to make me sob as I couldn't bear to see her so hungry but in so much pain at the same time. Now I show her the bottle and she gets so excited and squeals and tries to grab it off me and attempt to feed herself! She screams if I stop to wind her as she's so impatient to get it back lol! And I was so worried it would cause her feeding issues for life!! Light at the end of the tunnel ladies - if you look through my old threads you'll see how bad things were for us and look where we are now.
And doing great on solids.
I've been reducing the Omeprazole and we are now down to just 10mg - fantastic!!! It tends to flare up a little each time I reduce the Omeprazole but she seems to adjust after a week or two. Going to carry on reducing by 1mg every 3-4weeks and hopefully around the time she's 1 we'll be meds free.
Still horrendously constipated though, I don't know why. The poor little lamb is in pain all day with constipation. I had taken her off Lactulose and she was doing so well but for the past weeks things have been so bad again, going to go get more tomorrow. Like I said above to someone we've tried everything but it just isn't getting better (infact the older she gets the worse it's getting). Doesn't help that she'll hardly drink any water or juice!
Hugs and "reflux healing dust" to everyone. xx
