Reflux Help & Support Thread

Katerina had 2 meals at that mark as I was trying to cut down the milk to avoid reflux issues. She never had any problems with solids. I think if I remember correctly she was having 3 bottles per day of about 6 ounces each.

I think its difficult to compare babies even if they don'y have reflux! hehe The best way of comparison is with your baby and her previous habits! I'd say if she is putting weight nicely then there is nothing to worry about!

Thanks so much :friends:

Hey

Nim is drinking 3x 3oz bottles during the day and 3 4-5oz bottles over night (ish!) some days she drinks even less during the day.

Food wise she's eating ok ish, a small breakfast, small lunch and bigger supper, all given 10-20 mins after a bottle. If I leave a longer gap she refuses to drink the next bottle. She drinks approx every 3h during the day.

My daughter Alexis has reflux she was given gaviscon infant to begin with but it just irritated it even more she is now on ranitidine and domperidone they seem to be working she is still sick every so often after feeds and it varys in how much and force.

I'm sorry your daughter is going through this. Is she on formula or are you breastfeeding? It could be that she is allergic or intolerant to smt and she is reacting that way? In any case if those meds don't work maybe it's worth asking for losec? :hugs:

formula feeding shes on aptimal was orignally on sma but she was extremely sick and constipated on that. What is losec nd also is it possible to become constipated on reflux meds as i think she may be

I have heard of ranitidine causing constipation. And I'm not sure what you can give her at this age to ease that. We used to boil some dried prunes and use some of that water with her milk but Katerina was older than that. Something to ask about! Losec is the strongest med for reflux as far as I know, many people who couldn't find relief with anything else use this and it works great. However, I would maybe talk to the doctor about the possibility of her being allergic to the milk and this causing the reflux. In which case the meds wouldn't do much. I guess it wouldn't harm you trying a hypoallergenic milk maybe Nutramigen or Neocate? Unfortunately it takes time, you need to be patient. I know how hard it is. We are still having trouble!

Also you should try and have her upright for as long as possible after feeds!

Missy26, my daughter was incredibly constipated on all the reflux meds. We were told varying things from just cooled boiled water between feeds to cooled boiled water with brown sugar to prune juice diluted in water. I gave her all of them from about 5 weeks old and they did seem to help.

Does anyone think there is any way to prevent having a reflux baby? Im sure there isnt, or we'd all be doing it before our LO's are born!

My DD is my 1st reflux baby, after 2 Boys that thankfully didnt have it :flower:

Does ranitidine stop your los burping? My baby's been on it for 2 days now and has only burped once in 3 feeds. She doesn't seem to be uncomfortable though...

Hello guys, gosh I haven't been in here for weeks.

I don't think we belong in here anymore but I thought I would pop in in case anyone is wondering about us. Hope you are all doing well and slowly winning the reflux battle.

We're completely off all medication :-D Starting a mainly solid diet and dropping milk feeds (all under supervision of course) has been a complete turning point for us. We haven't had any reflux episodes that I can remember at all. Since stopping omeprazole the constipation has completely gone too and she now has completely normal regular filled nappies. She drinks hardly any formula but eats like a horse and sleeps through the night. I make up for the missed formula with cheese, yoghurt etc.

Kelly - I know what you mean about being so different to non-reflux babies! People are shocked when I tell them how little milk Macy has. Macy eats/drinks -

7.30am 4-5oz
8.30 a whole Weetabix/Oatibix with 2oz of milk, half a banana or similar
12.00pm 3/4 Jar stage 2 plus a yoghurt and some rice cakes, biscotti or similar
3.00pm 4-5oz
5.00pm 3/4 Jar stage 2 plus some finger food like cooked chicken breast, sausages, cheese cubes, salmon strips, cooked carrot/broccoli. Or a home cooked meal like spag bol. Plus a fruit pot and usually some sliced apple/pear/banana or similar
7.00pm - 3oz
11.00pm 3oz dreamfeed (going to drop this now)

Farie - try not to worry too much about the feeding overnight, Macy used to take most of her milk overnight, we got into an awful habit of only taking 8-12oz during the day and then 15oz or more overnight!! I dropped an ounce from each overnight bottle and made up for it in the day by spoon feeding her 1oz after each bottle, when she started finishing the extra ounce in the daytime I would drop another ounce from the nighttime and spoonfeed another during the day etc. Eventually we got into a good habit of 7oz during the day and only 3oz at night. Went out the window now though and we're lucky to get her to take 4-5oz at any bottle! xx

Hi girls,

Can I join? I'm been struggling with feeding my baby for about 3 weeks now, I've seen my doctor who suspected she has reflux so prescribed infant Gaviscon but it made her worse, so he's now put her on Nutramigen, we only started it last night but it's seems to be making her more sick, she hate the taste and is hardly taking any at each feed! I've got to see the doctor again next Monday to see how we are getting on!

I'm so stressed out, how do you get through months of looking after you LO with Reflux, it's such a battle, 1 I think I'm definately losing :-(

It is very very tough sassyttc ~ My DD was my 1st reflux baby & ive never known anything like it, it certainly makes caring for a newborn so much harder

You just have to 'ride it' ~ Try & get the meds right....In time it will hopefully start to settle :hugs:

Hi I'd like to join in th discussion ladies, Charlie is five weeks old and has just been given infant gaviscon. The HV suggested he might have Reflux yesterday after witnessing a sicky session so made me anappointment with the doctor this morning who gave me the prescription, have to go back next week to see how he's going on it. I had never heard of this before and I'm a mum of two older children, I just put the crying, back aching, hiccups etc down to wind.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated as it is quite stressful especially with two others to care for as we have to try and keep himquiet once their in bed so as not to wake them.
Things I'm already doing
Keeping him upright as possible, he even sleeps at an angle
Winding regulary during feeds
and now gaviscon in feeds(really hope this works)

hi,

my lo was diagnosed with silent reflux a couple of weeks ago too and as also been prescribed gaviscon.
before this he would cry most days in pain, stuggle feeding, back arching/rigid ect. id tried a few different milks, colief and the usual infacol ect.
i have to say hes the most settled now than he as been in weeks.
i put the gaviscon into his milk, hs on aptamil comfort so had to get variflow teats due to the thickness. after a few days he was smiling all time and i was overjoyed to see him like this.
after a few more days though he was terribly constipated and in discomfort again, not as bad as with the reflux though so i battled on giving him prune juice 5ml pure prune juice to 60 ml water, once a day. he as been on the gaviscon 2 weeks now and just started to poo yesterday without help yay. im really gald i persevered.
i have also been giving occasional gripe water at times when hes been in discomfort and this as worked a treat.
it as took my several weeks to get the right combination with my lo but the comfort milk with gaviscon, occasional gripe water and prune juice as helped my lil boy so much.
good luck, i really hope it works for your lo x

Good luck to the new ladies ~ Hope the meds help your LO's :hugs:

Thanks ladies gaviscon seems to be doing the trick. Yesterday he had more than 6 bottles and on the pack it says only 6 doses a day so I gave him a bottle minus the gaviscon and straight away he was sick and crying so its definatly working. Bit of advice needed it says 2 satchets in no less than 225ml of feed which is about 8oz and only 6 times a day, as my little man only has 5oz I have been putting on 1 satchet in the bottle because I'm only using one do you think it will be ok to go over 6 bottles if he needs it, will check with doctor when I go wednesday also gonna ask about swapping feed to aptamil comfort from SMA1 would you recommend it?

I swapped from aptamil first to aptamil comfort & it really does help ~ She has been on it since she was about 5 weeks old now  Sometimes you have to experiment with teat sizes, as its slightly thicker than the normal milks

Good luck :flower:

i changed to aptamil comfort too and i think its really helped things.

not sure about the extra gaviscon dose thou. i dont think your supposed to use it in more than 6 feeds a day regardless of the amount you use in a feed.

i use 1 sachet in each 6oz feed, my lo as 5 feeds a day but im going to try drop the gaviscon in one feed tomorrow as hes still struggling with constipation after a few weeks of being on the gaviscon.

still worth asking your doc thou

good luck x

Ohhhh, just to add ~ Dont think you would use gaviscon with the comfort :nope: But dont quote me on that, as DD never had gaviscon (she had other meds)

Agree with Kelly - have read lots of times that ur not supposed to use gaviscon with comfort milk cos it's already thicker (maybe a choking hazard??). We dont use gaviscon anymore cos dint help, but were using 9 sachets a day while she was still really little on paeds advice. Can also prescribe lactulose to help with constipation - makes a real difference - n we jst use

as needed rather than all the time x
