Reflux Help & Support Thread

Thanks stephybump2be! I was not sure what the actual surgery was.

We've outgrown reflux in the past month, finally, at 14 months. That was a frightening journey. I must say from 11-13 months it was not as bad, only a once-per-night projectile which is much better than the past!

TTC #2 now... really scared it will happen again :(

gilz howz it goin now? any better? sure hope so ...

Hi Steph

Things are just as bad. We go to Yorkhill on Monday so not long now. It was weird I went to our old paediatrician all geared up to say we were going private to Ross Hall and I never even got to say it. He took one look at Noah and said we need to get a specialist to look at him now. He phoned Yorkhill while I was there and he got an emergency appointment. Fingers crossed we make some kind of progress.

Our old paed was talking about trying Neocate but the gastroenterologist he spoke to said they usually use another Enfamil milk called something like pregestimil. But said they wouldn't make any decision until they saw Noah.

In the past week his congestions been so bad he's had two choking type incidents with mucus and then projectile vomitted all over himself and me. Really scary

Oh and good luck TTC Aliss. Is it likely a second baby would also be affected by relfux?

Thanks. I'm not sure if it will or not. I know many babies have reflux due to prematurity which might not be an issue with another full term baby but my bubs was 1 week late. He also had a dairy allergy which made it even worse and I expect a dairy allergy next time around too. Good question though, I should research.

All I know is that I feel bad TTC 10 months but someone relieved too!!!

Wow it's another worry to add to pregnancy when you get there that you could probably do without.

I suppose the only positive is that if the worst were to happen and baby number 2 had reflux also you'd know how to deal/cope with it from day 1.

True enough, I remember feeding him more and more everytime he vomited because I thought he was starving, in hindsight overfeeding to cool his throat! Couldn't figure out why he needed a bottle every 20 min! I was really clueless...

I'm the same, it's fantastic the amount of knowledge I have about reflux now that I wish I could have had 14 weeks ago when Noah came home.

I am positive my ds has reflux, he is EBF and gaining well so getting nowhere with health visitor. wondering if its coincidence but i am suffering with piles and was prescribed lactulose and thinking about it ds symptoms started same time as i began taking it. does anyone know if there is a link so i can switch to something else. my ds is suffering like many others and has gone from being a good napper to sleeping tens mins at a time and screaming in pain. i am exhausted and desperate. have bought wedge which i tried today and no improvement but will persevere.

Aliss - From what I've read there does seem to be a genetic link with 'reflux', although it's not always the case . Sophie is my 3rd LO, and in retrospect my 1st baby had reflux too (not colic at all!), but a relatively mild case. My 2nd DS only had normal baby reflux, (no probs with acid), and he happily 'puked' his way through babyhood without any problems or meds at all. My OH's mum, (now passed away), said that he SCREAMED constantly until he was a year old, so I blame him entirely for the whole sorry business!!! I've also read that avoiding dairy throughout pregnancy is a good idea (?) but can't remember where I saw this info - maybe you'd want to google this too. Have fun TTC:happydance: x

gilz - sorry not answered you, my OH managed to blag us a caravan at St Andrews. Glad u got quick Yorkhill referal, but rubbish they're not switching Noah straight onto AA ff (amino acid formula). Let us know how you get on soon as you can huni x

Hey Steph  hope you had a nice holiday.

We got seen at Yorkhill by a guy called Dr Barclay. He said Noah has reflux disease and CMPI so they gave us Nutramigen. If there isn't an improvement in the next fortnight he's to go for the endoscope and he explained all about the operation in case it's something that he needs.

Then we saw the dietician would talked is through weaning him early and without any milk products so we are just taking it from there really.

The main problem I'm having just now is getting the milk the right thickness. We have to use carobel in it and to get it thick enough so he doesn't bring the first three oz back up means the last 3 oz are too thick even with a variflow teat. It's rather frustrating :grr:

He's been less sick so far so that's great but no change at night yet, although the consultant was pretty sure that the sleep issues were more down to CMPI than reflux.

Gilz82 I'm glad that you are getting some answers! Katerina's doctor also insisted that very disturbed sleep was due to intolerance rather than the reflux itself and I have to say it was true. He said there was a recent study in the US that proved that the pain is not actually that bad to make them scream at night and be so uncomfortable. I hope Nutramigen does the trick and Noah doesn't have to have an endoscopy. If in any case he has to though please let me know if you have any questions as Katerina has had it done! :hugs:

Hi nma. I'm sorry you are going through this! How old is your LO? I can't think of a link between reflux and lactulose but then I'm not a doctor! Could it be that your LO is having an intolerance or allergy to smt? :hugs: Screaming in pain when sleeping could also very well be trapped wind? Maybe you can try massaging his tummy to help with that?

Thanks happyface82

Once you knew Katerina had CMPI how long did it take for her sleep to sort its self out? The amount Noah sleeps right now really worries me. Basically every third sometimes fourth day he just sleeps nearly all day because he's exhausted from not sleeping at night.

It is really difficult to say as Katerina was weaning at the time and had multiple allergies that we didn't know of so it took us months to get to the bottom of this by which time her gut was really suffering.

Oh poor little soul :hugs:

I hadn't given any thought of Noah being allergic to anything else. I really hope he's not, as it stand there are currently two jars of baby veg I can find that don't have milk etc in them. So that and fruit puree is all hes getting until my OH is home next and he can look after Noah while I put my food processor to good use :haha:

hehe I really hope its just the milk! It is pain to figure these things out! I'm keeping my fingers crossed you will see an improvement soon!

Thanks he is nearly a month old, have tried the massage, he had green slimey poo last night and is struggling to bring up wind. Also bad reflux and spitting up a lot - large amounts today. Maybe its my letdown and oversupply issue-going to try block feed and see as well as eliminate dairy and see how get on. I fed my first for 23months with none of these difficulties. just hard as he's suffering and his reflux seems to be getting worse, tried cranial oesteopath with no improvement. any advice appreciated

Green slimey poo is definitely a sign of food intolerances/allergies. Maybe you should go to the doctor and see what they say? I'd be eliminating things from the diet to see if it makes a difference. Also if the reflux is bad then you should get some meds to help your LO! :hugs:

thank you, he just had the one green poo and normal stools today. I have nut allergy and OH is asthmatic so am terrified of DS developing allergies. My toddler cant tolerate cow milk in pure form but is ok if its in other foods which he can have in small amounts. going to monitor and see how get on. his weight gain is great, need to get to bottom of reflux. Docs ok but i dont want to be told incorrectly to wean from breastmilk so will try a few things so if i need the doc i can go armed with something

I see why you are worried if there is a history of allergies. No doctor would recommend you wean from breastfeeding due to reflux. I guess the best thing would be to get some medication for it. Afterall if with a possibility of allergies the reflux must be treated. We have successfully treated Katerina's allergies but she is still on a small dose of reflux med otherwise she screams the place down when she has milk.
