I used my sisters medala swing with ds
Didn't think anything of it
Just made sure all sterilised
And thought it be fine
Other people had actually used it too.
Like my niece.

But this time I needed to buy one
So I bought second hand one
Thinking if I buy new tubing, bottles etc I be fine

But silly me googled
And now I'm in doubt at to if its safe or not.
Any opinions
Thanks.

The milk never reaches the machine itself so surely buying new tubing is all that is needed to effectively make it a "new" pump. Hospitals hire pumps so new tubing or hospital grade sterilisation obviously works for them.

That's what I thought too
But google was like milk can go backwards to motor
And grow mold
But if that's a problem second hand
Surely it's a problem with ur own pump too?
Thinking its to encourage people to buy new.
To make more money
But just wondering what others thought.
Thanks xxx

Some pumps are "closed system" by design and are safe second hand. Others are"open system" and do not protect against transfer of disease such as Hepatitis. This is how it was explained to me in my breastfeeding class. I think most medela pumps are open systems except for the hospital grade ones.

Thanks hon.
How ye doin xxx

I used second hand one with my son and never knew this
Hve one on its way in the post to me now
And I don't know if I can use it
Doh!
My Oh thinks I'm being crazy worrying about it

How ye getting on?
Xxx

I used a second hand pump from some one on varage sale. I just boiled everything.
Lo is almost 9 months now and hasn't had any issues!

Thanks hon.

I'm doing great. Adjusting to life with a toddler and a newborn. How've you been? I can't believe you are in 3rd tri already!

U must be soo busy.
I'm good hon
Tired and sore but that's normal.
Was it a really tough adjustment?
Prob stupid naive Qs

Glad you are doing well considering. Not stupid questions. The adjustment has gone relatively smoothly. Cora is a pretty good baby so that helps. My biggest hurdle is that breastfeeding didn't work out so now I'm exclusively pumping. It's exhausting but worth it. My goal is to make it to 6 months.

Depends on the pump! Most medelas are not reccomended because they are an open system like the ladies have said above. If it is a closed system pump then that's safe:)

I did that for two months with simon
I wasn't getting enough though
So had to supplement
I know how time consuming and tough it can be
Feels like ur constantly pumping or feeding

Hugs xxx

Glad its gone relatively smoothly though xx

Hope we be the same xxx
Nice to catch up with u xxx

I don't think its closed system.
But at the same time the only people saying its not safe are manufacturer
So obvs they want u to buy new..
Also has been no known case ever of disease transmission
And the possible mold should be a problem even with single user
That's why I'm confused :)
Thanks

Yeh the mold thing doesn't really make sense. Unless maybe it wasnt well cleaned after its last use and has been left sitting about damp and uncleaned for ages. In that case bacteria like salmonella would be a risk too I would think?

There is potential for disease to be transmitted by BM. Saying that I am sure the risk is very low. I'd guess maybe they say it to cover themselves just incase someones baby gets ill or says they do from a second hand pump. And as you say it is rather convienent that you have to buy a new one from them.

Can you replace or sterilise all the parts that the milk circulate in?

They say u can run soapy water through
Oh has sterilisers' for beer making
He says he can run that through instead
To sterilise it all.
Then I can get new tubing and bits
Or sterilize the ones with it a few times
Oh is very good with taking things apart and fixing
So ill get him to check it our properly when it arrives.
Thanks bunny

How u doin xx

I know disease can be in bm
But I'm just wondering if they say pump.can suck bm into motor
How could it get back down the tubing
If the suction is towards the motor.

But having any doubt on it
Is making me sorry I paid for it in the first place.
I'll see what oh can do with it
When it arrives

Dont know if you saw this article from the LLL. It is quite against second hand pumps. It seems to me like it is a bit on the strong side but it does give more actual explination as to why than a lot of other sources.

I did thanks hon.
That's what made me doubt it in the first place
The manufacturers I wouldn't fully believe
But lll should be reliable enough
Thanks hon.
I prob wont use it after all this
But I loved the medela swing and used a few pumps with simon
But I don't even think single user its ok now.
Doh.
I bought a new hand pump too.
Might end up just using that.
Thanks

I still can't help but think that its being a bit over the top. I am sure there is potential there but potentially we could get germs from everywhere, lol. The fact that it all just seems to be theory and no one actually seems to have specific cases to point to makes me think its a very small risk. Still its hard to feel comfortable with the idea once its in your head.

Yeah any risk at all makes me a bit uneasy.
But it is strange to say ots theoretical risk
But never actually happened
In all the years people hve used them.
I'll see what oh can do with it
And how bf and manual pump goes.
I might end up using it or not :)
Thanks hon xx
