Shocked by doctor re: weaning

I think the doctor meant if it slows down too much but I dunno. Are babies supposed to double their birth weight by 6 months?

I think as a guide they say they should triple their birthweight by a year but it depends how big your baby was. If they were 5/6 lb then it's doable but if your baby was 9/10 lb it's not allways healthy for them to put weight on that fast. Niamh was 8lb15 born and at nearly 7 months shes only 15lb15. Aslong at they are happy and developing normally then weight alone isent a factor when you need to start

Ah right. Maria was big when she was born but then dropped percentiles after that and still has a way to go before doubling birth weight.

I agree with Jstarr that people need to learn to read the signs better. Maria puts everything in her mouth but thats cos she's teething, not cos she's hungry.

People who dont agree with weaning early, or even at 4 months, should learn to keep their opinions to their self! If you dont agree with it thats fine, but you shouldnt make other mams feel like they are harming and neglecting their child because they dont agree with you. It's their baby and their choice. Every baby is different!!

I dont know why I open these threads and carry on reading, I just cant help it!

I began weaning at 3 month because I felt that was the best thing for MY baby. Yes she has reflux, but I really cant see the difference from putting food into her mouth at 3 month than a baby without reflux.

No one has said or even implyed that people who wean early are abusing or neglecting their children. If you had read the thread propperly most of this has been a discusion why certain foods shouldent be introduced before 6 months because of possible medical implications when they are older.

OP was looking for advice as she dident agree with her doctor, not because she wanted to slag people off who weaned early.

I think all these guidelines and things are there to make us paranoid. Following your babies signs is the important thing!

Ohhh i just thought.. sad i know at this time, what about shellfish / nut allergys, do they just appear or do they come from somewhere too?

Allergys are different to intolorances. Intolorances are where your body cant digest a certain food propperly because it was given too early or because the body just cant handle it, its uncomfortable and an inconviance but not life threataning.

An allergy is where your body see's a certain food as a threat and its immune system responds to get rid of a threat and its this that causes the side affects. Usualy allergys are with you from a young age but can occur later in life,

The digestive system is still maturing for the 6 months after birth which is why people say to wait until 17 weeks+ (i know reflux babies can start earlier), noone has called anyone neglectful :nope: if you know you have done what you think was best for your baby then you don't need to justify yourself. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and if more people excepted that then there wouldn't be an argument every time the word 'weaning' is mentioned

Isobelle has doubled her birth weight since birth and she isnt quite 4months. the reason i will be weaning early is to slow this down, on the advice of my HV.

i think the moral of this story is

your the parent do what you feel best.

i will not be reading this thread again because there is so much conflicting advice its just doing my head in.

•Holding his or her head up and controlling head movements.
•Sitting well when supported.
•Making chewing motions.
•Doubling his or her birth weight.
•Being unsatisfied after a full milk feed
•Demanding increasing and more frequent milk feeds
•Attempting to put things in his or her mouth
•After a period of sleeping through the night waking in the night with hunger
•Displaying curiosity about what you are eating.

Isobelle is displaying all of these signs so therefor IMO, MY daughter is ready.

Enjoy debating ladies.

Harry had to be weaned at 19 weeks he was 11lb 5oz at birth i bf till 4mths but he wasnt gaining anymore i switched to bottles and that helped a bit but then he dropped again. my gp used to be a paediatrician and harry was showing signs that he needed food his iron level had begun to drop slightly and the gp said clearly harry is a baby who cant wait till 6 mths. hes never been happier he loves his dinner hes never had a problem swallowing and is so happy and healthy now at the time i was so scared he just wasnt himself and was tired and didnt want his milk. my gp said harry was ready earlier than most babies and he said all babies are very different in harrys case waiting till 6 mths could have made him ill :( x

I weaned G at 4 months on MW advice. I don't regret it and it hasn't caused her any problems either

It has JUST been changed back to 4 months. It didnt work at 6 months, it was too late. Alot of babies really struggled with it and alot of mums did it at 4 months any way. So no Dr was right dear.

The recommended age to wean is 6 months. Official guidelines have not been changed.

Just so as not to mislead anyone - none of those are signs of a need for weaning. Some of them are normal developmental phases / milestones, and the rest of them are signs of a growth spurt which is very normal at 3-5 months. It used to be thought that these were signs of needing weaning, but we know more now and these are now often described as 'false signs'.

The NHS has a good page regarding this: https://www.nhs.uk/start4life/pages/no-rush-to-mush.aspx

If I had gone by those signs Ivy would have been ready at 3 months! And she was a huuge baby. I didn't feel comfortable offering her foods until she could sit up unassisted.

Jacob started weaning at 4 months. I just followed his lead to be honest.

lol I am sorry I can't keep away, I am just getting really annoyed.

do you work for the WHO then? or the board who says 'offical' guidelines have not been changed?

This is just sooo wrong! Where did you get all this information from?!

Yup, Ruby sat well supported when she was less than 3 months, doubled her 7lb birthweight by 12 weeks I think? Also maybe I should have started applying make up to her at around 9 weeks because she always stared at me putting it on. Obviously she was ready....

Is this gonna turn into a

"my baby can..."

"my baby did...""

blah blah blah thread?

And I'm not sure who you were aiming that at, even though it wasn't me, I found "dear" patronising and slightly offensive

The guidelines have not changed here, and apparently not in the UK either.
