I'd use maternity pads especially for the first few days then switch.

The flow is heavy! You'll be changing every hour or so so need something heavy duty, plus the normal ones can be rough on stitches

xx

Thank you SO much ladies for all the tips I really appreciate it! Amazing what us ladies go through hey. All worth it tho hey! Xx

Top tip from my mw last time if you are tender down below when sitting is to get two hand towels and roll them lengthwise so they are like long sausages - one under each bum cheek. V comfortable and no need for expensive cushions.

PS Never understood why the thick pads don't have wings - crazy!

PPS watch out for regular pads like Always - they might not soak up all the blood and may stick to any stitches.

Also a little tip!.. Buy extra nappy sacks to put you're used mat pads in.. No one told me this before labour but Lochia STINKS!!!

This is true! I'd forgotten about that - good reminder! We empty our bins every day anyway (mainly because of DS' nappies!) But after putting a pad in the bin at night or overnight, you can detect it in the morning when you open the bin...... mmmm nice. Post-birth is so dignifying eh?!

I had a huuuge packet of them, from mothercare, but when they ran out switched to normal towels. They are soo nice and squishy to sit on when you've had stitches

Has anyone used the Asda mum to be maternity towels? ps great tip on the towels to sit on and thanks for warning me about the smell, maybe buy a separate bin for the spare room :haha@

Lol so I started buying things for my hospital bag. I decided to start with maternity pads for some reason! OMG how huge are they!!! And advice on the pack was to stock up on about 4 weeks worth. 4 weeks!! I'm going to need them for 4 weeks!! I needed a lie down after reading that.... Lol.

haha i'm a first time mum and was exactly the same the other day! i was advised to pop a few in my handbag just in case waters break when you are out and about - opened the packet and was like WOAH these are not going to fit into my discreet pocket in my handbag! i now have 2 pads in a sandwich bag (!) sitting inside the main part of my bag. please don't let anyone go in there haha!

thanks for the tips on rolled up towels, a towel in the bed and using nappy sacks to wrap them in. these are the kind of things that should be written in books but never are!

I'm using pads from Boots and Wilkinsons which both feel identical to what they gave me in hospital. I was also advised by a friend to buy some disposable changing mats (next to the nappies in shops) to sit/sleep on. They use these in hospital too and I am so glad I bought them as it just helps you to feel a bit more confident that you're not going to leak everywhere. There have been a good few times where I've stood up to feel a good amount leaking and these have seriously spared me and my furniture! It's horrible to think about I know, but I've found the way I feel physically quite surprising and wish I'd prepared for being quite uncomfortable and losing my dignity on a daily basis!
Speaking of which, anything you can stock up on for piles could feel like a real life saver. Witch-hazel is great for cooling. I really wish I'd bought a special cushion to sit on and am hoping to be able to get something in the next couple of days as it's really hurting and definitely not healing in the meantime.
So sorry if I've made this sound terrible. I just wouldn't wish so much discomfort on anyone and if it means you buy a few bits you never end up having to use then that's the best news ever!

this is great advice thanks! sorry ur in so much discomfort! I have a fear of leaking always have! So already stocked up on these pads u put on the bed! Have like 35 of them and will be wearing tena lady adult nappies and then a maternity pad inside them sounds over the top and unessery but if it will help reduce the chance of leaking im doing it lol x

Think its time for me too get my head out of the clouds.....27 weeks on Thursday and this is all news too me......oh dear!!

Anyone from the US know where we can get maternity pads? I haven't seen them in stores before and I was just wondering...Thanks!!

Call me crazy, but I will be wearing tena lady's after this birth. Seriously, like the full on adult nappy. After my son was born, the first two nights were like a blood bath. I'm not messing around this time. I figure i'm going to be up and down out of bed to feed the baby that no pad would ever stay in place.

I'm quite curious about the size of maternity pads...apparently they don't sell them in my country anymore...the hospital just provides kotex overnights. I can't picture pads bigger than overnight ones!!

:nope: wow... I totally haven't given a thought to the bleeding afterwards... I knew I needed maternity pads but had no clue it would be like a bloodbath!! Good to know! But scary... Thank goodness we have a mattress protector on our bed already due to our stepson sometimes sneaking in. :(. I'm so not prepared yet!

I've looked in every store I've been in and have never seen maternity pads...so my guess is US ladies just use regular ones.

I do know most hospitals give you some after birth.

Can't imagine we bleed less so maybe the ones sold in stores here are absorbent enough

I hated the bigger ones. I got the slender super absorbant ones that had wings, the always brand. I don't like the smell so I alway just change mine every 2-3 hours or so anyway. The ones the hospital provided were almost like a diaper and they were horrible because the didn't absorb anything. It all kinda ran down the side. Learned my lesson after the first one came and I was stuck with the horrible ones. I always bring my own from now on. I just use the ones that I feel most comfortable with and bring a good supply

I had a forceps delivery with episiotomy almost 4 weeks ago...still using the mat pads...minimal blood loss now but v v comfortable as still sore at times...could recommend highly enough! Good luck xx

WSS! With my first I used normal maternity pads on my first night in hospital and they were useless - I leaked everywhere. I asked my OH to find some different ones and he took my MIL with him and she told him to get the incontinence pads. Yes, it felt like I was wearing a nappy but they were brilliant for the first few days of really heavy bleeding - no more leaks at all. I then switched to regular sanitary towels for the rest of the time - I can't really remember but I think the bleeding lasted for about 3 weeks for me.

Loving the tips on the tena ladies. Hadnt thought of that but I am also worried about leakage - I might invest in a pack! DH will probably faint hahah but oh well.
