Yep, we have 5 chickens. I love them, although they HAVE to let you know when they are laying, and they are early layers. Sure the neighbours love me!
We have them in a run that is 6ft high, 4ft deep and 12ft long. I used to let them free range but they ate EVERYTHING that is green so for the sake of my garden and herbs they are now only allowed out for 5 mins a day when I do a quick clean, then 30mins one day when i do a proper clean. I do spoil them, so they often get fresh fruit and veg and once a week I give them live crickets, but you can give them a lot of leftovers and things.
We get between 3 and 5 eggs a day so give my sister a lot and sell the excess. To me an old egg now is about 4 days old. Problem is they are lovely to eat but too fresh for baking, so i'm not baking as much now. I would recommend them to anyone. You don't need a lot of space. If we ever go to a bigger garden I will get more and maybe some ducks too.
We also have a dog and 2 cats but the menagerie is smaller than it was. Last year we had 3 cats, a dog, a chameleon, a fishtank and the 5 chickens!
