Smoking??

I'm amazed that someone can ask a simple question and it turns into a lecture. We're all grown ups, know the risks blah blah and are more than capable of making a decision.

I think if you've never smoked there is no reason to teply to this topic.

The question was "So im just wondering who gave up while preg and went back to it, and who managed to continue not smoking?? Anyone smoke through there pregnancy?? XxxX"

Yes or no answer?

Throwing facts, figures, guilt tripping people and making them feel bad about smoking will not make people change their minds. its an ADDICTION and until anyone knows what thats like I really dont think there was any need to post in here.

Sorry, just my opinion. This sort of thing really pisses me off.

I was a smoker, gave up 7/8 years ago and it was the best decision I made :) I had took Asthma from it and every morning I had that typical smoker's cough, I had watched my auntie die from lung cancer and on hearing that another aunt had been diagnosed with cancer I decided to quit.....Me, no-one told me I had to quit but I decided to quit and I'm 100% sure thats why I've been successful.

Even after all this time I still get that urge to smoke but very rarely :)

My Dad died when I was 7 from cancer, he smoked but you know what I never thought he was a selfish pig for smoking. I just thought shit happens, people die when their time is up and he did all he could for me when he was here.

Ryder I see where you're coming from but seeing it through a smokers eyes is different, there are also so many factors surrounding heart attacks and cancer that you can't just blame smoking for everything . It may be a contributory factor or it may not, hell it could even be genetic:shrug:

Fact is I have seen smokers who have had cancer and heart attacks and I have also had non-smokers in my family who've had cancer and heart attacks. Diet, weight, genetics, timing, who the fook knows what else could have caused it.

My only advice if you've stopped try and stay stopped as I do feel alot better but you have to do it for you.

the thing is my dad died of drinking...it hasnt stopped me drinking and i dont lecture people on it...my dad passed away and i have had to deal with it i dont think he is selfish as i dont think smokers are selfish...everyone knows the risks but as mamafy said she was succesful because she wanted to give up...a lot of people have given up though pregnancy (good on them) but with the thought they could go back to it once baby is here and thats what got them though...

people die of all sorts, including cancer and heart attacks if they have never smoked just because we smoke it doesnt mean we are stupid and cant understand the risks it just emans sometimes we need it for whatever reason in ou lives and it is an addicition just like heiron and it is sooo very hard to give up especially if you have almost been forced into it...

I know when people lose parents it can make you angry when other people are doing the thing that killed your parent but...none on the mums on here have said they smoke around thier baby (and they are better than me for giving up though the pregnancy anyway) i think this will always be a touchy subject with people and i was honest telling people i still smoke and im fully expecting to have lectures and be told off but im sorry it wont change me...because i know it all and i know the risks but for some reason i cant think of them risks everytime the urge comes over me to smoke....

WOW.

I'm pretty sure Rae and Ryder were not trying to LECTURE you girls when it comes to the reasons why people shouldn't smoke. Ryder has clearly been affected by lung cancer, and I'm sure she's more or less just looking out for your children... No one wants to grow up without one of their parents. I lost my grandpa when I was 2 because of lung cancer, and it's horrible knowing all the things I've been through since then, and hearing my mother, or my grandma tell me how he'd love to be a part of it...

I think - if you're able to quit through your pregnancy, why even go back?! I quit the moment I found out I was pregnant, and there is NO WAY I will go back to smoking. If I've last THIS long, clearly, even though yes I do get times where I'll see someone smoking, or smell it and all I want to do is jump them for their cigarette - if I've managed to last 9 months... I have the will power to last forever.

Here in Ontario - there are SOO many laws protecting children from cigarette smoking. No smoking with anyone under the age of 16 in the car, no restaurants, bars, etc are allowed to have smoking indoors, even a lot of the patios these days are non smoking, or the far back corner is the tiny area smokers are allowed. Theme parks, zoos, etc all have "smoking areas" that are hidden off in the far corners where no one else or their children have to walk through the cloud of smoke and end up getting second hand smoke. They don't do this just because - they do this because smoking is clearly bad for everyone, and the children should be protected.

Smoking in another room of the house doesn't mean your child isn't going to get any second hand smoke... it travels through the house.

I just think if you had it in you to quit when you were pregnant, whats the point in going back? For those that tried and couldn't quit while they were pregnant, I think it's slightly different cause obviously they're having a harder time.. But if you've quit once, you can quit again..

Smoking is one of those things that you're either very strongly for - or against.. And I don't really understand how something so bad for you, you could be arguing so strongly FOR...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not FOR smoking, I'm FOR someone being able to make a choice about their own life and not be made to feel guilty about it. Especially by people who don't really have any experience of what they're talking about.

YES it's a very controversial subject, and yes, most people have been affected by lung cancer or other smoking related issues. It's always going to be a subject that causes controversy and arguments, but I really think it's awful for someone to come in here and lecture people who they don't even know about a choice they've made in THEIR life for them and THEIR family, no one elses. Its no one elses business!!!

Ive said earlier,I stopped smoking when I was pregnant, and since I had my son Ive had about 4 on nights out. It's extremely hard day to day to not smoke, but I manage somehow, taking each hour at a time. I know exactly how hard it is to stop and stay stopped, and fortunately I have a great support network around me that I can fall back on. I was ready to stop, but a lot of people aren't and thats their choice.

The trouble is, and i think only smokers or ex smokers will understand what i mean ...

no amount of facts or scare tactics will make you stop, you have to want to stop for yourself. Those new pictures they put on cigarette packets to scare you dont bother me ...

Thats a really good way of putting it hun they dont bother me either
Il stop wen i want to i never smoke around the kids

I dont want ever start again I definitely crave it a lot but I havent done it, however, in the past smoking has been a lifeline for me and quite possibly actually saved my life. so I dont regret starting the habit and, for now, I'm glad I stopped.

i quit when i found out i was pregnant and after i had roo i had a few when i was drinking but after a few weeks i was determined not to have my hair stinking of fags round roo my oh smokes he goes outside i think its such a turn off for the other person if they dont smoke i send him upstairs to brush his teeth

someone asked why people give up then go smoking after cant remember who sorry lol  but when your pregnant you have a very good reason to give up its not just for yourself its for a lil baby growing inside you i dont think i quit for myself i did it for roo :) my oh only smokes say 5 a day but he cant quit them so cant imagine what its like if someones on 20-30 a day must be very hard

I'm so glad they are passing the no smoking laws in the US. Here we already cannot smoke in any public buildings whatsoever, and they are passing laws so that people cannot smoke in a vehicle with anyone under the age of 18. I know alot of people who are pissed off about it. But I feel it's best for the younger generation who cannot speak up for themselves yet.

Oh gosh I'm so happy for that too! :happydance:

I hope no one gets offended but I really think laws should be stricter when it comes to smoking to protect those who've chosen not to do so.

I agree with this. I never used ot smoke round people and would never let another person breathe my smoke. I am so happy that all the pub's and clubs round here dont let you smoke. :) xxX

But alot of the points we were making are about how smoking doesn't just affect your life. It is your life, and your choice, and I respect that if thats what you choose. It doesn't affect me. However, as far as I know, the comments I made were about how it can affect your children (not meaning just yours but anyone who goes around their children after smoking, or smokes around them, not necessarily saying you do but just people in general), and the children cannot make that choice for themselves. I feel very strongly about not smoking, I always have.. and I think that is down to the fact that my grandma died because of it, and I have a younger brother who does have asthma which developed when he was six years old and if my mother hadn't noticed him in his room not breathing and rushed him to the hospital he could have not been here today. :(

I understand that, which is why its so controversial.

I dont want to sound totally one sided, because Im not at all, my grandfather passed away when I was 11 because he smoked all his life, my dad is a smoker and has previously been ill because of it, Ive had numerous chest infections and scares which no doubt is due to my smoking, so I get it, I really do.

The problem I have is people coming in here and giving lectures when it wasnt asked for, the question was if people had stopped smoking through pregnancy, if theyd kept going, if theyd started again after bubs was born.

Everyone who smokes knows the risks, theyre plastered all over the boxes.

I don't think anyone should be critisized for having their views on smoking (be it pro OR con).

Just because someone doesn't actively smoke themselves, doesn't mean that smoking might not have affected their lives. My best friend has had ear infections plauging her all throughout her childhood, and she has asthma. She was 3 weeks overdue yet only weighed 6lbs at birth. Her Mom smoked like a chimney while pregnant. Granted, that was when people didn't know what they knew now, and smoking was allowed in patient rooms at the hospital.

So no, my Best Friend doesn't smoke, yet she has very strong opinions on it. I don't blame her. SHE didn't make the decision to smoke, it was thrust on her without her say, and SHE is dealing with the reprocussions to this day. I'm also sure that there are a TON of people who's lives have been touched by Cancer, Emphesema and all the other nasties that come along when someone chooses to smoke.

In this day of age, with all the scientific proof on what smoking does to you, I can't imagine why anyone would go back to it. Hey, I'm an "ex smoker", but I don't think that just because I used to smoke that should give my opinion more credit than someone who doesn't.

As alot of the responses on here have mentioned, when you smoke, it is never just you that it affects. It affects your friends, family and loved ones who have to watch you slowly kill yourself. Because that's what smoking does. Find me any shred of evidence that smoking is actually GOOD for you and maybe I'll rethink my opinions.

:hugs:

Edit:

As with every controversial topic, if someone posts something about smoking... or drug use... or whatever that is known to not be good for you of course people are going to give their opinions. It's a forum, and that's what these threads are for. It's sensitive, so of course emotions are going to rise... especially from people who have been affected by it. Hopefully Ema knows (and I'm sure she does) that no one is "preaching" at her, just giving opinions.

Well then again, I shouldn't speak for others... so do know that I am not lecturing anyone in particular, just giving my views. ;)

I quit when I found out about Jack, have had 2 'special' cigarettes since he was born but only when he was at his Grandma's for the night, and so far haven't had any cravings at all. Doubt I'll be going back to my old ways :p hope not anyway!

I am so happy that all the pub's and clubs round here dont let you smoke. :) xxX

oh me too! It makes all the difference when you come home from a night out and your clothes and hair don't smell of smoke

Sorry but I dont feel bad AT ALL about posting what I did... I dont care if people get made reading what I wrote either.

Smoking is a bad thing, in every way. I know addiction is very hard to overcome, and like you guys said, its your choice... But coming from the other side of things, sometimes choices you make are selfish and can ruin the lives of your family.

My Dad was selfish and didn't quit, and because of his choice I grew up without a father, and basically a mother because she worked constantly to support us. I dont have a Dad to walk me down the aisle at my wedding... I never got family trips or lots of toys or clothing because of our financial problems... Jasmine doesn't have a Grandpa.

Again... I dont feel bad or sorry for posting this and being against smoking. All the pictures and ads you see are true.

Emas originally post is about an ODD cigarette when drinking... etc!! It is not the same as a smoking 20+ a day! You will not make me feel guilty and nor will I accept that I am selfish for enjoying an odd cigarette once in a while!

EXACTLY... this is one of the reasons I stepped back from this forum...!! Its happened before when Ive started threads and its really unnecessary!
