ugh...smokers

Oooh... sorry Rachel I have to disagree with you. I don't dislike or disrespect smokers. I don't smoke, that's my choice. I don't appreciate inhaling others smoke and sometimes, even outdoors, you can't avoid it.

The way I see it is that if we were born smokers and chose not to smoke then absolutely it would be the non smokers responsibility to move away from smokers to protect themselves... but when we are all initially non smokers and smokers make that choice to smoke then they need to accept responsibility for it. It's been proved that smoke inhalation of any kind can be harmful and so really smokers should be doing everything to protect others from inhaling the fumes from their habit.

Think of it a different way. If I chose to take up a dangerous hobby... lets say I enjoy waving knives around carelessly... you wouldn't think that it's your reponsibility move away from me to protect yourself. You'd expect me to take care, respect others from danger and only practice my hobby in a place where I could only harm myself. That's a stupid OTT example but kinda makes the point.

Don't wanna start a debate and I hope I've put my point across without it seeming like one of those overly negi comments that make a thread spiral.

no i would run from u if u were waving knifes to protect myself :haha: just like some of u would move if a person was smoking nxt 2 u it makes sense

the OP was angery as this smoker moved from her son and sat next to the posters son to light up, which is totaly out of order.

if she wanted to smoke fair enough but the fact she moved away from her own child showed she didnt want him breathing it in so why should someone elses son have to.

and also when ur pregnant and sat down and ppl either side of u start to smoke its not that easy to move away. its there habbit so its their responsibitly to move away not hers.

im a ex smoker and i always moved away from ppl to smoke, even when we could still smoke in clubs. i wouldnt smoke near my mates who didnt smoke and id definatly never smoke around a child

Yes, I was more angry that people surrounded me and were smoking, it wasnt like I was in a open area and could just leave, I was up against the guard rail, front row and there were hundreds of people around and behind me, in order to get up and move I would have had to manage my way through all of them, also, the people smoking came in much after I was sitting there and moved towards me to smoke and away from her child.
I have friends that smoke, if we are all in the backyard and they are smoking, not really as big a deal, I tell my son to stay at the other end of the yard and I can move away, I just honestly think that if you choose to kill yourself by smoking you shouldnt expose others to it......

if they was smoking in open air theres not alot u can do or really shouldnt moan smoking has been banned indoors in every public place now, give the smokers a break i say!

Are you for real? People chose to smoke. That doesn't mean that they should do it sat next to a pregnant person or someone eating or anyone else for that matter. Passive smoking does kill, we know that. So why on earth if you want to kill yourself should you think it ok to kill another?

well im sorry u would soon moan if they lite up nxt 2 u in a cafe or restuarnt smokers have been banned for smoking indoors for a reason (passive smoking) if they are outside u shouldnt moan its your responsibility 2 move from them not them from u! there outside its where they should be! dont knolw what the fuss is all about juding people cuz they smoke by pregnant ladies its not hard 2 move from them if u dont like it!

When I smoked I wouldnt smoke around a child or pregnant woman or anyone for that matter that didnt smoke, I would move away and even apologise if my smoke went their way if I was standing outside somewhere. I see that as just good manners something so many dont have.

Not that this is an excuse but perhaps they didn't understand how inconsiderate it is. When I smoked I never noticed how much I smelled, how much smoke smelled, how annoying smoke was, how noticeable it is, etc...
Just yesterday I was in a casino w/ bad ventilation and the smell of smoke permeated the whole visit, I got a headache, and me and OH stunk (my hair smelled). I NEVER NOTICED ANY OF THIS when I smoked.

ur right u dont notice just how much u stink when u smoke until u quit, and now that my oh wont quit i cant let him near me as i feel sick lol

but the thing is, its just common sence that people who smoke should no that ppl dont want it in their faces. which some people really lack any of

Whatever your opinion it is totally totally wrong to inflict your smoke on children, I dont care what anyone says there is no excuse for it. If you choose to smoke round your own child then so be it, no one can stop you, but dont do it to other peoples. As others have said that women obviously didn't want it near her own child, but didn't give a damn that it was wafting over someone elses. So rude.

Argh, it really bugs me when MIL lights up next to me. Some people are very inconsiderate, even if i wasn't pregnant i still dont want to smell it and breathe it in!

I think if you're walking through a feild and someone lights up then that's fine as a non-smoker can just move away a little but in an inclosed space like OP was in then it's just good manners to move away.

I totally agree with the smell thing, me and OH have both developed an almost snobbish hate for it since quitting lol! I can't believe I used to pong like that, ewww!xx

I know a lot of smokers dont even notice how bad it/they smell but its not like they dont realize that it causes a list of medical problems...second hand or smoking it yourself.....people just dont care I think a lot of the time, I mean you have to know that sitting in a closed area of people and your smoking is causing them to breathe in your second hand smoke which can cause the same medical issues with them as it can you........

I agree, disgusting and rude. I mean, it's your choice to smoke, it's my choice not to. If I want cigarette smoke in my lungs, then I would light up my own. I'm very annoyed by cigarette smoke, and people who are rude. Just because you choose to smoke doesn't mean that I have to deal with it, and that nobody else minds it. :growlmad: I don't want to harm my baby, I mean, the air we breathe is bad enough without inhaling cigarette smoke at the same time.

I know what you mean, we were waiting for fireworks, and a group of people with kids of their own lit up POT right next to us. and the second time this summer we've had fireworks, another group of people lit up marijuana beside us again. not just cigarettes... it was horrible.

even when i was not pregnant i would get slightly annoyed if a smoker blatantly lit up right near me if everyone was eating or if there was kids about..just cos they chose to do something so harmful to their health does not mean that other people should have to deal with it!
dont know if its like this over there but here there are many main areas OUTDOORS that are no alcohol zones..dont know why the same thing doesnt apply for smokers!
if someone lit up a smoke in the direct vicinity of me and my daughter i would get up and move yes but i would make it clear to the smoker that they are rude for doing so!
i think smokers have the responsibility to make sure their smoke does not affect others not the other way round!

I used to smoke - 20 a day for 23 years, and by chance I read Allen Carrs book about stoping smoking, god almighty he spoke much truth. I didnt smoke becuase I liked it, I smoked becuase I couldnt NOT. Smokers are utter liars when they claim they enjoy it, no we fooking dont, we have to smoke or we'll tear ourselvea apart, its all we think about, we cant do a damn thing without planning it around smoke breaks.

My FIL just started smoking again claiming his weight was going up too much...I looked at him and said I've been there, and I know you're lying and are ashamed so have to lie about it. He can lie to the rest of the fmaily, who have never smoked but not to me cos I KNOW! lol

And sionce quitting I;ve turned into a right no smoking nazi - anyone breaths fags in my face, or over my bump gets a very loud and very rude 'get the fuck away from me, you smelly *******'.

My OH cannot believe how rude I can get, considering I used to choke the house and him half to death (he doesnt smoke, and never liked it, but said he accepted it becuase he loves me)

personally, i don't think it matters where you are, what you are doing, or who else is around, smoking near another person is not just rude, it is practically assault. the smokers / ex-smokers who say they would move away from children and pregnant women clearly understand that their smoke harms other people's health, and doesn't everyone, regardless of age or pregnancy, deserve not to have their health damaged by other people's ignorance and stupidity? it would be illegal to go to any public place - inside or out - and release a poisonous gas, so it is beyond me why smoking in public is apparently ok.
