Underhand tactics - formula companies

Ok i have a question for breast feeding mummies. If we had a world where formula was allowed to be advertised for any age group and your child was asked to model in these adverts would you let them?

run for the hills!:headspin:

Its honestly a genuine question. I would have no problem with my child being used in a formula ad but i use formula so i was just wondering

I do think its a honest question, maybe a little point making for this thread seen as how it has gone but on its own thread a genuine princepal one

Some people say formula, some people say artificial
Some people say couch, some people say sofa
Some people say pram some people say stroller

......... it's just what you are accustomed to.

People are not going to change how they naturally word things because of a forum.

i would?
if you told me that you were offended by me saying that your baby was born 'artificially' because you had a c section, then i wouldnt say it to you? in fact, didnt you post a reply in another thread yesterday saying 'id punch someone who told me i hadnt given birth'?
there are people out there who think nothing of calling our children b*****ds because they were born out of 'wedlock' it is the 'correct' term, the dictionary says so, but people would be offended by it, so its not used! come on, you need to look at the bigger picture here!

The difference bewteen us is that I don't really care if you did call it artificial.. Of course it wouldn't be the nicest of things to say, but there are bigger things in life to worry about rather than get upset at someone elses terminology.

I'm sorry, but I am used to the word artificial, mainly because of SCBU - it's not meant to offend, and I'm sorry that you take offence, but that's what I call it. Leni had a few feeds of artificial milk .. He was artificially fed .. I can't help but call it what I am used to. Who says I am not offended by the word formula?!?! Do you know what I mean? It could go on forever about who is offended by what word

nope and I see nothing wrong with saying no either as he isnt formula fed that would be a lie. Whats the point on pretending my child is fed that product when its not? I wouldn't let my son be in an ad or a model anyway and he has been offered a contract. I am proud of my son being able to breastfeed him and would show him in a breatsfeeding advert where it would be true how he was fed.

*waits for someone to take offence*

No offence taken, its good to get an answer. I know you said you wouldnt let him be a model anyway but would you apply the same principal to modeling throwaway nappies if you used re-useable nappies or vice versa

No offence taken, its your right to stick to your princepals of not associating with a product you dont use or like.

But do you realy think most adverts are only ever modeld for by people that use only that products and love it.
I cant imagine most of the women in the special k adverts actualy do that diet or the guy from the burgerking advert realy goes around smashing his car into store windows just to get a burger :)

No they didn't invent it but they carried on using it when it became clear people didn't like it for wahtever reason it doesn't matter why really does it? Some people got upset and another group instead of modifying their behaviour carried on regardless because they don't respect other peoples feelings, why should they have to justify their feelings?

Agree totally here.

Can people honestly say that if they had a friend who FF and you mentioned the word 'artificial' or 'inferior' and they said please don't use it again as it upsets me, would you continue to keep using the word?

Just because we are sitting behind screens here doesn't mean that we can't show a certain level of respect to each other.

I am all for a debate but it can be debated without jibes.

Does no-one want to reply to this post then?

lol, not everyone will reply to every post you make

meh! I asked about health visitors and what the do to help formula feeding mums with education on bottles like 60 pages back but never got an answer. That was when everyone was complaining there was no help for formula mums and making bottles, also no help hv was to me with breastfeeding so i was curious.

I got no help with formula feeding from the midwifes at the hospital. I asked for help feeding my LO when she was born as she was struggling to take any milk and I'm still waiting :coffee: I asked the HV on numerous occassions for help and i was basically told 'sorry we can't help with formula'

I bf for 4 weeks whilst the twins were in SCBU when I got home I switched to formula, I got told that the twins would need to be on prescription milk for their weight and got absoloutly no help on info about steralising bottles, temps for bottles, how to make them etc. The HV was no help at all. Thankfully I researched it on the internet to make sure I was doing it right. I've also asked when the twins are to come off this formula and when to go onto follow on milk, neither the doctor, paedictrican or HV know

Edited to add: But then again I never got any help for breastfeeding. I was left for 3 days in the hospital and SCBU took it upon themselves to feed the babies formula, I asked several times for some help with trying to breastfeed them and I asked for a pump. It took until day 5 for the crappy midwives and SCBU to actually take me seriously then they told me to hand express with a syringe... I had no idea what to do. Crying my eyes out and finally on day 6 they gave me a bloody electric pump and left me to it. Because it had been so long I had very very little milk but I carried on for 4 weeks and eventually just gave up.

I don't think either ffers or bfers get much help, it seems like you are supposed to know how to feed this child you've just been handed over with no help on anything! I realise the mws are busy but I felt so let down. xxx

im just pointing out your contradiction. you posted in another thread saying that you would punch someone in the face for suggesting that you hadnt given birth because you had a section..... clearly, you would be offended by that if you are going so far as to threaten violence, yet you show no consideration for the multiple ladies here who are offended by your repeated use of the term artificial feeding. perhaps you were used to it in scubu as tube feeding IS artificial feeding. the truth is that formula isnt artifical milk. its definetly milk, its just not HUMAN milk.....

you say there are bigger things to worry about than what we call formula.. yet you were clearly concerned at the giving birth thing, so yeah, thats a biggie for you, this is a biggie for us... why are you finding it so very hard to see a similarity there?

i dont want you to be sorry that i take offense, i just want you to show some bloody consideration and stop using it when you KNOW it offends people!

And leelee, I would suggest Rome, it's gorgeous. Plenty of things to do and not too hot and the food is lovely. Although unless you get a tour bus it's a fair bit of uphill walking

Rome, not too hot?? In the spring or autumn maybe! It gets ridiculously hot in the summer, always worse in cities. Lots of people die every year.

I know most lie like them spot ones, honestly them girls have never had a spot in their lives! and ones on the diets looks like they have never sniffed chocolate. But thats not why he wouldn't be doing it really if I wanted himto be a model in adverts like he was offered when he was 8 months old he would be by now but the fact he is not says it all. I think he is to young dont feel ok with him all over mags and tv, its ok all over my livingroom walls, facebook and where ever else an obsessive picture taking mum like me wants to show but they are for me.

Is this the longest thread? I don't remember seeing a thread this long lol :)

I would like to go somwhere next summer when LO is 1. I would like somewhere not too hot, with a pool and where you can walk to a little village or somewhere with nice authentic food.

Anyone any suggestions? I was thinking Malta as we have been before (myself and OH) and it seemed like a nice family place.

Southern Switzerland :) It's normally sunny and hot but you can either be by a lake or up in the mountains so not too hot. Food is scrummy.

Or Italy.

We always go on beach holidays but next year with 2 los I'm going to insist we either go into the mountains or to the Dordogne or somewhere.

Both sound lovely. We are just back from Italy and I was saying I would love to go to the Amalfi coast next year. Is that family friendly does anyone know?

Most of Italy is, although I've not been to the Amalfi coast myself, I can ask DH. One of my favourite places to visit is Le Cinque Terre, and it's just as magical with children as without.

In that loreal advert Cheryl is wearing hair extensions and a lot of them. But it says in the small print that she is. That's one thing I don't understand when companies must spend a fortune on celebrities for their ads- if I want something I'd buy it and the celebrity would have absolutely no influence on that. That's just me tho.

humnm sometimes celebs turn me off products if the advert is annoying, like if i liked victoria beckhams perfume I wouldnt buy it because it has her name on it and i dont like her or katie prices stuff. So they do influence when its their own brand anyway.

Sorry I wasnt criticizing your desision to not turn him into a model, on many levels I agree with you about why not. :)
I was just adding to what you where saying about not being a model for that product because he doesnt use it and the fact that thats what advertising is all about.

Have you tried Kate moss perfume? I luuurve it! She has three different ones they're all lovely.

You know I have never heard anyone using the term 'artificial' before this thread, and I have seen many of the posters on this thread posting on similar topics before. Before this thread started a few days ago all anyone was saying was formula. Now that artificial has been shown to really wind people up it seems to be being used over and over. I too had a SCBU baby and the term 'artifical' was not used there at all. They said formula.

Sometimes it doesn't matter about being technically right, it is just about not unnecessarily winding folk up. I feel very passionately about BF but this kind of thing does not do the BF cause any good at all. It just gives fuel to the fire that BF are all smug and self-righteous.

I love all of Britney's ones. She has a new one coming out and I really really want it!

I've never heard of it either, before this thread. You're right too it's been used over and over again by poster's who i've never seen use the term before. Strange.

It's like the "Mother" & baby magazine though. The babies are airbrushed & the "mothers" are actually women who have never even been pregnant :saywhat: I don't agree with that and for that reason I don't buy the magazine but that's my personal choice so I can understand where you're coming from dragonfly :flow:

I know I was just explaining a bit more into it. :flower:its cool if anyone does do it though theres nothing wrong with it I just dont want him to be at that at this age or even just a tad older, like if he wants to be a vain teen then thats ok lol
